10 Things You Won’t Learn in College

You are going to learn a lot in college, but there are some things that they won’t teach you about the world of work. For example, many college graduates have the perfect resume and degree, but they stick their foot in their mouth by saying dumb things to their boss. Below we take a look at 10 things you should never say to your boss.

Can you write that down for me?

This shows you have no respect for your boss or his or her authority. You should be prepared with a notepad and pen. If you are not, never ask this question. It makes you look like a disrespectful person. Your boss will probably not say anything about it, but believe me, they will make a mental note of a comment like this.

I just booked a vacation for next month

You shouldn’t ask for time off by telling your boss you scheduled a vacation. Never book vacations or flights until AFTER you have gotten the time off approved. This shows you have no respect for the chain of command. Who knows, there might be a big project due then.

My bad

This makes you sound like you are about 15 years old. It also shows that you are nonchalant about making mistakes and that you just brush them off. Responses like this sound very cavalier. When you make a mistake, take it seriously and let your boss know how you plan on rectifying it.

I can’t work with …

Refusing to work with someone will mark you as a difficult person. Instead go to your boss with legitimate concerns and explain why you are having a difficult time working with this person and ask for advice. Come to your boss like you are confiding in him/her, not complaining.

Do this or I will Quit

Making an ultimatum to your boss is a career death sentence. This is a great way to get yourself fired. Instead, take a day or two and calm down. Think about the situation clearly and decide if it is best for you to move on to another job or to work out the situation in a professional and intelligent manner.

That’s Not My Job

This statement shows you are a selfish, lazy person who doesn’t value a job. Unless you boss asks you to do something unethical or unsafe then you should never say this. Say this statement and you will lose support of your boss. Most people do work that is not on their job description. In today’s job environment, people have to do more. Be thankful you have a job.
