There are two well known American trade organizations for health care professionals. One is the American College of Health care Executives, or ACHE; the other is the American College of Health Care Administrators, or ACHCA. Both organizations provide a collegiate association for health care executives and their colleagues. Both provide numerous business-related services for their members and engage in online continuing education programs.
ACHE is active in helping its members pursue and retain professional positions. They provide a national job bank and an online resume file for people looking for work and businesses looking for workers. They have two periodic journals that publish in-depth pieces on industry issues and a magazine that goes to its 30,000 members. ACHE operates a publishing business that currently has several dozen book titles to its credit, all related to the health care management field. Sample titles include Understanding the U.S. Health Services System; Building your Reputation with Health Care Consumers; and The Financial Management of Hospitals and Health care Organizations.
ACHE’s online education program includes a number of courses that provide certification for specified industry segments. Health care executives must be licensed by the state in which they practice and must pass a federal course of study and exam as well. Re-certification or re-licensure requires a certain amount of continuing study in the field. ACHE provides courses for that purpose and for general certification purposes to members who are interested. Generally, the texts involved can be purchased through the ACHE publishing house.
The College of Health Care Administrators operates a similar organization and a similar website. They are not as aggressive in their publishing efforts; however, they do maintain an online professional catalogue where members can purchase books and pamphlets relevant to health care administration. ACHCA has a continuing education program that can lead to certification in selected topics. Those course are provided as self-study, online opportunities and in seminar form at various locations around the country.
ACHE has a seminar program as well, most of which are delivered on site around the country. It is an active program, delivering multiple seminars for each of the following professional categories:
- Chief Executive Officers
- Group Practice Executives
- Healthcare Consultants
- Hospital Executives
- Managed Care Executives
- Nurse Executives
- Physician Executives
- Post Acute/Chronic Care
- Rural Healthcare Systems
- Healthcare Executives
- Early Careerist Network
- Faculty & Students
- International Healthcare
Both organizations provide membership opportunities to people who either are practicing professionals or who have a bachelor’s degree and an interest in the industry. The ACHCA has a database available to its members that contains information on each state’s licensure requirements as well as the state requirements for the federal exam, which is administered at the state level. The database also provides information on re-licensure requirements.
Each of these organizations provide important services oriented to keeping their membership and interested parties current on the industry. They are signs of a profession that is growing and maturing.
