Due to hit the market is Vera Wang’s new fashion line of sportswear, intimate apparel, jewelry, shoes, handbags, and accessories. The new products, collectively named Very Vera, are sold exclusively in Kohl’s department stores. The announcement comes as yet another success in her long history as a talented fashion designer. Her story serves as an inspiration for any aspiring student in pursuit of a degree in fashion design or a degree in fashion merchandising.

Vera Wang is perhaps best known for her famous line of wedding gowns. Her motivation for designing bridal gowns originated from her personal search for a simple, elegant dress to wear at her own wedding in 1989. She could find nothing that matched her fashion design preferences and settled on a less than satisfactory dress. When she discussed the idea of launching her own line of bridal gowns with Calvin Klein, he thought she was mad. However, she failed to let his comments dampen her spirits and materialized her collection the following year.

The child of Chinese immigrants, Wang gave up on the idea of a graduate degree at the age of twenty-three stating that her father could not afford an advanced degree in fashion design. She settled with her bachelor’s degree in art history and took her first job as the youngest editor of Vogue Magazine. She also spent two years as the design director for Ralph Lauren before leaving to design her own products. Despite her lack of a formal degree in fashion design or a degree in fashion merchandising, Wang exhibited a natural acumen for the world of fashion. One of her most famous designs was Nancy Kerrigan’s Olympic figure skating costume in 1994.

In addition to her innate talent for fashion design, Wang has also developed her knowledge of fashion merchandising and business sense in order to make her products a success. In an article for Time Style & Design, Wang admitted that the business requirements of being her own CEO have at times sapped her enthusiasm. However, true to her energetic resolve, she has launched her new line, Very Vera, in an attempt to reach a new clientele. She hopes that Very Vera will offer style at a more affordable cost to her customers. Wang has also announced that her Very Vera collection will retain her signature “relaxed, effortless approach to fashion.”

Today, students interested in a career in fashion design or fashion merchandising are choosing to attend distance education programs through schools such as Westwood College. The list of accredited programs offering a Bachelor Degree in Fashion Design or a Bachelor Degree in Fashion Merchandising are numerous. Students can easily maintain current responsibilities and have access to formal training for their desired career. Prospective students are encouraged to visit College-Pages.com for a complete list of available programs. Current technology is making it easier than ever before to achieve a dynamic, successful career in the field of fashion.

Japan’s Nintendo Wii has a one-of-a-kind wireless controller. Gamers will be able to use the controller as a tennis racket, bowling ball, golf club, boxing gloves, and more. Instead of a complex series of button combinations to produce action, gamers simply tilt, swing, and point the controller. This new innovation in game art and design comes as a welcomed development for the reflex-challenged, and serves as an inspiration for anyone in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in game art and design.

Nintendo’s major competitors, Sony and Microsoft, are also busy releasing new products in the game art and design industry. Sony’s PlayStation 3 arrived in 2007 and is much more technologically advanced than the Nintendo Wii. Microsoft has recently released its Xbox 360 and has sold over millions since 2005. Game art and design has, indeed, been a booming industry since its initial explosion with the release of PONG in 1971.

However, Nintendo expects to gain a competitive edge by appealing to the mass market rather than just the serious gamer. Whereas Sony’s PlayStation 3 costs around $600, the Nintendo Wii is promised costs only $250 in the United States. Mr. Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, reported to the New York Times that Nintendo intends to expand the current market of game art and design to avoid continuing down a path that limits its appeal simply to the hard-core gamer.

Nintendo’s game artists and game designers have equipped the Wii with several unique features in order to capture Nintendo’s target market. In addition to its sleek appearance, it comes with a photo channel that allows digital photographs to be displayed on the television screen. It also comes with an interactive news and weather channel as well as internet surfing capability through the television.

Nintendo’s Wii comes as yet another advancement in the game art and design industry. Each console is sold along with a Wii sports game featuring tennis, golf, bowling, and a variety of other sports that show off the Wii’s new controller. 25 to 30 additional games will be available for sale this year as well as 30 downloadable games from the internet for the price of $5 to $10 each.

The rapidly evolving technology of Nintendo and its competitors demonstrates one of the factors behind the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ predictions for careers in game art and design. Along with the profession of software publishing, game art and design is expected to be the third fastest growing career through the year 2014. Students attending universities such as Westwood College to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Game Art and Design can count on numerous employment opportunities within the industry. Prospective students may contact Westwood College for more information or visit College-Pages.com, the education and career resource, for a complete list of available programs and additional resources.

Can the placement of a bed affect the quality of sleep at night? Can the presence of a dividing wall change the perceived cleanliness of a bathroom? Can a mirror in a five-by-six-foot room create more space? All of this and more can be accomplished not with the Eastern philosophy of Feng Shui, but with the professional discipline of interior design.

What is Interior Design?

Professionals with a bachelor’s degree in interior design consider concept, color, proportion, balance, ergonomics, and function while manipulating interior spaces to enhance enjoyment and functionality. The design of most buildings involves the input of interior designers. In addition to decoration, interior designers also focus on architectural details such as window placement and crown molding. A talented interior designer improves the quality of life for the occupants that will inhabit a space.

Educational Requirements for Interior Designers

Twenty-three states and the District of Columbia require a license to practice interior design. Most professionals have achieved a Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design from an institution such as Westwood College. While programs vary in their content, the Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design at Westwood College focuses on the technical, creative, and human elements of the industry. The program at Westwood College also provides Auto CAD training, a popular software tool that allows designers to create and manipulate three-dimensional drawings.

Potential Specialties

There are a broad range of specialties available to a professional with a Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design. Potential specializations include residential, retail, corporate, hospitality, healthcare, and institutional design. Some designers specialize in bathrooms and kitchens while others become experts at designing cafeterias and restaurants. It is also possible to specialize in environmental design, a discipline that focuses on creating sustainable designs. Some specializations may require additional certification on top of state licensure.

Job Outlook for Interior Designers

Jobs in interior design are expected to grow at a similar rate to other professions (9 to 17%) through the year 2014. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also reports that three out of ten interior designers are self-employed. Creativity, imagination, and persistence are essential qualities for individuals who whish to be successful in the field of interior design. They also must be good communicators with effective writing and speaking skills. Current employers are increasingly looking for interior designers who possess knowledge of Auto CAD software along with a background in architecture and engineering.

Where to Find More Information

Students interested in more information about a Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design may contact Westwood College for more information. Westwood College provides a well-rounded education that is necessary for competition in the industry of interior design. Prospective students may also visit College-Pages.com, the education resource, for a complete list of available programs and additional resources.

A biology student with aspirations of becoming a veterinarian is not exactly the early background one would expect from a famous graphic designer. However, Margo, founder of a successful Los Angeles design company, fit the description in her early days as a student. She reportedly enrolled in a graphic design class “on a whim” while pursuing her graduate degree and went on to be a successful American graphic designer.

Whereas the traditional career path for a graphic designer is to first earn an Associate’s degree in graphic design or a Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, Margo had no formal training in graphic design whatsoever. After graduating from college, Margo first accepted a job doing paste-up of generic grocery packaging. However, her menial job provided extensive experience using computers in the design process, which she quickly used to her advantage to engage in freelance work. Then, like the other three out of ten professionals with a degree in graphic design who are self-employed, she opened her own company, Margo Designs, in Los Angeles, California. She launched her business over twenty years ago, and currently enjoys a successful career of designing, lecturing, and interviewing with prominent magazines, such as How and Create.

One of the specialties of Margo Designs is the “branding” process, a very common function of a designer with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design. A professional with an Associate’s degree in graphic design may also be involved in the technical design aspects of branding. Branding is the process of creating an identity for a company through the use of market research, names, logos, slogans, design schemes, and strategy. Prominent examples include the Nike check mark and the Starbuck’s Coffee logo.Margo has had the unique privilege of being involved with the design of logos for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and even Target stores.

Today, Margo continues to operate her Los Angeles company, and also spends time traveling to give lectures on different topics and trends in graphic design. She also serves in the School of Arts faculty at California Institute of Arts for aspiring professionals in pursuit of an Associate’s degree in graphic design or a bachelor’s degree in graphic design. Recently, she was featured in Women Designers in the USA, 1900 – 2000: Diversity and Difference, a show on exhibition in New York City. In her spare time she enjoys skiing, traveling, and flying airplanes.

Despite the seeming irrelevance of her early focus on biology, Margo claims that her love of biology significantly influences her work. Perhaps her unique background is partly responsible for the distinction she enjoys in the field of graphic design. This distinction has allowed her to work with such prominent public figures as Madonna, Cher, and Prince.

Margo serves as an inspiration for both students and professionals in the field of graphic design. Students interested in pursuing a similar career are encouraged to visit College-Pages.com for an up-to-date list of graphic design programs available. Achieving an Associate’s degree in graphic design or a bachelor’s degree in graphic design through specialized, distance education programs is a viable way to embark on a creative career while maintaining current responsibilities of work and life. Through continuing advancements in technology, schools such as Westwood College, that offer an online Associate’s Degree in Graphic Design, are making many students’ aspirations into a reality.

Two out of four employers in the fashion industry look for workers with credentials such as a bachelor’s degree in fashion design or a bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job competition is expected to be high given the relatively few new positions that open up each year and the amount of professionals who are attracted to the field. In this industry of sharp competition, choosing the appropriate degree could be a significant factor in increasing a student’s potential for landing that first fashion job.

Fashion design and fashion merchandising are two common degrees that students are pursuing through programs similar to those developed by Westwood College. Westwood College graduates with a bachelor’s degree in fashion design engage in activities such as designing custom garments, attending fashion shows to showcase sample work, and analyzing trends and customer preferences. Other graduates from Westwood College with a bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising are more often involved in activities such as product buying, visual merchandising (arranging store front displays), and retail management. Whereas fashion designers are the creative muscle behind the industry, fashion merchandisers specialize in the business know-how that helps products sell.

All careers in the fashion industry require some amount of fashion sense and creativity. However, there are specific character traits that tend to lead to success in either fashion design or fashion merchandising. Students who are highly creative, enjoy drawing, and prefer to be trend setters may do well to enroll in a bachelor’s degree in fashion design. By contrast, students who rely more on analytical skills, are attracted to the idea of owning a business or retail store. The analytically-minded students tend to observe fashion trends and not jump right into following the trends just because they are popular. These individuals may be more successful with a bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising.

Because consumer demand is growing for stylish clothes at an affordable price, the majority of new jobs for graduates with a bachelor’s degree in fashion design will be with design firms that specialize in making clothing for department stores and retail chains. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also predicts that many fashion designers will choose to be self-employed. For example, prominent fashion designer Vera Wang worked for several years within the industry and eventually chose to open her own business in order to develop a personally designed line of bridal gowns. Graduates with a bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising may also choose to open an independent business or may be employed as managers of retail stores.

Choosing between a bachelor’s degree in fashion design and a bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising can be an important initial step towards a lucrative career in the fashion industry. Each set of skills taught by the two degrees are essential in today’s competitive market. Prospective students who whish to obtain further assistance at selecting the appropriate degree can contact Westwood College for more information. Students are also encouraged to visit College-Pages.com for a complete list of available programs and additional resources.

Many talented individuals are attracted to the field of graphic design, but what does it take to be successful in today’s competitive market? Creative, open-minded, and self-directed are just a few descriptive terms of successful graphic designers. They also know how to express themselves through writing, speaking, and visual art. They pay attention to detail, work well under pressure, and manage their time effectively. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook from the U.S. Department of Labor, these are the necessary tools for success in the field of graphic design.

Gifted students who are attracted to the field of art design are entering programs like the online graphic design degree from Westwood College. With an online graphic design degree, students are prepared to compete for a variety of attractive entry level positions. Graphic designers perform any number of tasks from working on promotional brochures to working on the design of unique logos for new companies. Intermediary and more advanced designers may also create the layout of magazines, newspapers, and other publications. As of late, graphic designers are increasingly called upon to develop web pages and other multimedia projects.

A quick scroll through the Occupational Outlook Handbook reveals that potential employers are as numerous as the different roles filled by graduates with an online graphic design degree. Design service companies are one of the largest employers of graphic designers. A graduate with an online graphic design degree may also work at advertising firms, publishing houses, or motion picture production firms. While the employment possibilities are plentiful, three out of ten graphic designers choose to engage in freelance work or start a business of their own.

Most positions in graphic design require a college degree. An Associate of Arts (AA) in Graphic Design, such as the Online Graphic Design Degree at Westwood College, is a very good starting place for learning and beginning the mastery of the technical requirements for a graphic design career. Westwood boasts that its graduates are prepared for a variety of entry-level positions in the field of graphic design. Students who already possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts, will be even stronger competitors as employers look for workers with a strong educational background. A previous history in courses such as writing, psychology, sociology, history, and cultural studies help a graphic design artist to better understand the content and significance of various projects.

Many creative and artistic individuals who are inspired to pursue a career in graphic design are materializing their aspirations through completing an online graphic design degree. Numerous colleges and universities across the country have developed very sophisticated distance education programs that allow students to enroll in classes while maintaining their current responsibilities. Distance programs can teach everything from digital illustration to web page design. An online graphic design degree is turning out to be the perfect way for many students to put their creative talents to practical and professional work.

There are online degrees from art design colleges available in both digital design and web design. Digital design is very art-oriented while web design incorporates designing a web site for commercial, political, or social purposes. Webmasters are essential to businesses because he incorporation of web applications into commercial sites can have a significant affect on potential customers.

Potential webmasters can develop some of their skills through online degrees in visual communications, web and multimedia design; and in graphic design. Other skills that go with website development can be obtained through distance learning courses in online advertising or internet/intranet management programs.

The video game industry is one of the largest professional fields in digital art and design. Online schools have an arrayof courses, and even degrees, in subject areas such as animation, game art and design, game software development and digital graphics. A bachelors degree in game art or game software includes a substantial amount of technical coursework on software and web applications, and a little less emphasis on design. However, online programs work well for these courses because you can go over it with your instructor until you understand it thoroughly.

Many of these same programs are applied in industrial design situations. AutoCAD is only part of industrial design; the art of the product is critical as well. This career requires balancing between the aesthetic and the functional. You can find online training for the right mix of digital skills to break into this field as well.

The Internet has helped careers in the art and design field rapidly grow all over the world. The use of computers has increased the number of creative jobs and helped the complex field of industrial design in the manufacturing marketplace. Creativity is a hands on talent and using computers for art and design is essential for creativity using distance learning.

For the distance learning environment to be successful, it is important that a professional relationship be established with teachers and that the on-line schools make this relationship available for the student. Using the Internet makes communication between you, the students, and the professors seem effortless. Many discover that communication is vastly improved in on-line programs than in a traditional classroom setting.

Art and design opportunities exist in other areas as well. Architectural and mechanical drafting are two examples of associates degrees that can be obtained on-line, and help develop skills for an entry level job. An associates degree in interior design is another degree available through distance learning from many schools specializing in interior design.
