A criminal justice career can be started with credentials that range anywhere from a high school diploma to a four-year college criminal justice degree. However, the Department of Labor reports that more education means higher earnings, lower rates of unemployment, and access to a wider range of career options. Students looking for an introduction to criminal justice can pursue on-the-job training or start with a two-year educational program. However, workers wishing to pursue leadership positions within the field more often enroll in a criminal justice bachelor degree online program that focuses on criminal justice administration.

What is Criminal Justice Administration?

The discipline of criminal justice involves the study of the government-created system that was set up to maintain social order. The three branches of the criminal justice system are law enforcement, courts, and corrections. Criminal justice administration most often refers to leadership positions within the system. Professionals who choose to enter criminal justice administration receive training in interpersonal and managerial skills, again, as mentioned earlier, often through a criminal justice bachelor degree online program.

Criminal Justice Jobs with a BS in Criminal Justice Administration

Graduates of criminal justice bachelor degree online programs are qualified to work in a variety of positions in law enforcement, criminal law, and corrections. Earning a criminal justice career degree at the bachelor’s level qualifies workers to fill state and federal positions. Other options for criminal justice bachelor degree online program graduates include working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Criminal justice administration programs typically focus on training students for leadership and supervisory positions within the field of criminal justice.

Choosing a Program from Available Criminal Justice Schools

Criminal justice degree online and campus programs typically focus on a variety of subjects, including: Criminal behavior. Criminology methods. Public policy. Specialized interpersonal communication. Ethical issues in criminal justice. Criminal justice job degree programs offer training in both hands-on and administrative aspects of the field. Training also includes a balance of study in law enforcement, corrections, and courts.

So, now, a great many students are choosing to pursue criminal justice bachelor degree online programs in criminal justice administration. For example, the University of Phoenix provides a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration that has been especially designed for working professionals; this is one of the most popular online criminal justice programs available today. Students may complete the entire program through distance education while maintaining work and family responsibilities. The criminal justice administration program at the University of Phoenix focuses on providing students with the managerial and leadership skills necessary to pursue advanced positions within the criminal justice system. For an extensive list of available programs, prospective students may visit College-Pages.com, the education and career resource website.

Looking for an alternative to counseling, Meredith Silvia accepted a job as a usability engineer after graduating with her bachelor’s degree in psychology and government. She seeks to understand the ways in which people learn and remember knowledge and applies that information towards making hardware, software, and websites more user-friendly. Silvia ’s job makes other employees’ jobs simpler.

With the end user in mind, Silvia meets with a variety of parties during the design process. She first interviews groups of customers to determine their needs for the particular program or website. Next she moves on to the software engineers, promoting layouts and colors that will help to avoid employee confusion. Finally, Silvia draws on her education from her bachelor’s degree in psychology to anticipate what employees will want to accomplish with the program or website. Determining which choices will be available and when users will be able to make them is one of the most important steps in designing efficient tools.

In order to better determine what users will want to accomplish, Silvia regularly performs usability tests. Initially, a piece of paper with the program layout is placed in front of the test subject to mimic what he or she would see on a computer screen.Silvia then asks the user to point to a button of his or her choosing. After pointing, another piece of paper is whipped in front of the viewer to replace the previous “screen”.

Another benefit of a bachelor’s degree in psychology is the training to be a good investigator. Usability engineers must probe test subjects in order to discover the reasons for their choices. For example, Silvia says that sometimes a user will say a page should have a print button available. Further investigation into the reason for that need may reveal that the user simply wants to get a better look at the page. The need would then best be served by creating an improved display rather than adding a print button.

Silvia also holds that a usability engineer must be skilled in the art of persuasion in order to work with the user and introduce changes. Usability engineers also require good oral and written communication skills along with a certain amount of creativity to find innovative solutions to difficult problems.

There is no formal path to becoming a usability engineer. However, having a bachelor’s degree in psychology is very helpful in understanding the behavior and choices of employees. Technical knowledge is a must as well.Silvia learned her technical skills by working as a tester, technical writer, and trainer. In addition, usability engineers should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment in order to meet the tight deadlines sometimes imposed.

Students interested in more information on becoming a usability engineer may go to the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society webpage. Prospective students may also contact Ashford University for more information on starting a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. College-Pages.com is another useful source of information with an extensive list of available programs and additional educational resources.

As of 2003, 27% of U.S. adults had earned at least a bachelor’s degree within their cumulative education. The total number of bachelor’s degrees awarded jumped nearly 50% from 1992 to 2004. Meanwhile, the average cost of tuition has been rising faster than the rate of inflation. The most recent data show tuition alone at $21,235 per year at private universities, and $5,491 per year at public universities. Estimates fail to take into consideration the costs of room and board, books, time, and effort. Does the four year investment in a bachelor’s degree come with sufficient rewards?

Financial Rewards of a Bachelor’s Degree

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the highest-paying occupations in America demand at least a bachelor’s degree education for entrance into those industries. On average, a professional who has earned a bachelor’s degree earns $900 per week, whereas the worker with only a high school education earns only $554 per week. Going deeper into the data, that means the bachelor’s degree graduate earns 62% more than the high school graduate. Over a lifetime, this adds up to major differences in total earnings.

The Bachelor’s Degree at Work in the Job Market

In addition to higher earnings, bachelor’s degree graduates have lower unemployment rates and a wider variety of career options than workers without a college degree, according to the most recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The job market appears to be increasingly favorable towards workers with a college degree. Between 2002 and 2012, over 14 million job openings are predicted to be won by bachelor’s degree graduates or master’s degree graduates who are entering a profession for the first time.

Should Everyone Get a Bachelor’s Degree?

Although the data certainly sheds a favorable light on the prospect of earning a bachelor’s degree, there are additional factors to consider before jumping in head-first. Job prospects and earning power are also affected by the local job market, the type of bachelor’s degree earned, and the industry a worker is attempting to enter. The most lucrative and fastest-growing industries for bachelor’s degree holders are expected to be in business, computers and engineering, education, counseling, and healthcare. For some professions, an associate’s degree may be sufficient, whereas other professions may require a graduate degree to take advantage of new entry-level job openings.

How to Get Started Towards Earning a Bachelor’s Degree

For more information on job outlook by career and education level, prospective students can visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2006 – 2007. The number of subjects and avenues towards pursuing a bachelor’s degree are endless and include both campus and online bachelor’s degree programs. College-Pages.com is another valuable source of information with an extensive list of available programs and education resources.

Few can forget the hype that surrounded the release of Stephen Lundin’s Fish! in 2000. The revolutionary book became an addition to nearly every manager’s library. Large corporations, such as Sodexho, made Fish! required reading for all company managers. The effective advice from the book stemmed from a fish market where enthusiasm and respect for human factors in the workplace made it a profitable success as well as a fun place to work.

Programs such as the Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management at Ashford University are honing in on the human side of management in order to prepare its graduates for success in the job market. According to Ashford University, human factors of management include:

understanding group dynamics

ethics

human resources issues

effective communication

The program has been specifically designed for professionals who already have some work experience in their field of choice and wish to further develop their management skills.

With over 30 areas of concentration available within the Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management program, Ashford University graduates go on to develop a variety of careers. Many choose to go into sales, retail, small business management, government, or non-profit organizations. Some graduates also choose to start a business, or work with the local, state, or federal government.

Professionals who wish to further specialize in the human side of management may wish to choose psychology as their area of concentration within the Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management program. Up to twelve credits of psychology courses may be transferred into the program, allowing students to keep the value of previously earned education credits. In fact, up to 75 credits total may be transferred into the 120-credit program in order to speed entry into a career of choice.

Graduates with a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management are expected to enter a profession that will grow faster than average. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that Human Resources, Training, and Labor Relations Managers will experience an 18 – 26% increase in employment through the year 2014. Other specific management careers may also be viewed at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics website.

When seeking graduates for entry level positions, some employers look for professionals trained in the human side of management, while others look for professionals with a more technical, business-minded background. Students attending the Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management program at Ashford University have the advantage of training in both aspects. This is an important factor in allowing graduates to enter the workforce with a competitive edge in the midst of numerous qualified graduates and experienced workers in the field.

Students who are interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management may contact Ashford University for more information. College-Pages.com is also a valuable resource that contains a complete list of available programs and additional informational resources.

There is no experience like the actual, day-to-day experiences you’ll find in the real business world. However, by obtaining your business administration degree, you will be exposed to a wider spectrum of problem sets and compelled to grapple with them. Throughout your studies you will be challenged to analyze and synthesize complex data in order to become a practiced, experienced administrator. Not only will a degree in business administration broaden and lend more credence to past experiences and training, but a degree will show others your motivation to succeed.

Although you may have already been to school, or you’ve been on a job for a while and feel you know what you need to know, do not let yourself be content with just “good enough”. Success is persistence, hard work, learning from your mistakes, not following the herd, training, acquisition of skills and most importantly, a good and solid education. One should never stop learning as education only leaves room for improvement.

One may have goals and aspirations, but those goals and aspirations amount to nothing if one never acts upon them. Honing your skills by further education is a very obvious, practical way to “kick it up a notch” and enable yourself to back up those aspirations with very concrete training. It is never too late.

If you are considering an online education, consider this. It is possible to maintain a job, enhance one’s earning potential and, at the same time, earn a degree. When you examine the options and compare the possibilities of an online education to the more traditional, you will find that cost is minimal, schedules are flexible, and you may even be credited for past work experience. So, it is conceivable to earn that degree within a twelve- to eighteen-month time frame at one of our accredited, online universities and with far less expense.

The global economy has a certain momentum of its own and it impacts all of our lives. We are becoming more aware of this everyday and we all are aware of the fact that we no longer can remain in a vacuum and survive. By attaining a degree in Business Administration, you are reinforcing the efficiency of the economy; you are becoming a critical cog in the business world by learning to make it more competitive; and you will have learned so much more about the mechanics of business, enabling you to provide better policy and effective leadership. And, isn’t an attribute of leadership the ability to imagine a better world?

Over the past few years, cycles in business have seen dramatic growth as well as declines but, as a trained professional, you will have the wherewithal and knowledge to move and adapt to new and changing business climates. Besides, in a technology-driven culture so dependent on cable channels, live satellite feeds, cell phones and Web Logs, what better way to gain a degree than to do so online? Online education is no longer a matter of glib, Madison Avenue hype; it is a matter of technology surfacing to fulfill an actual, specific need in a very practical manner.

With criminal justice becoming one of the fastest growing career choices and the recent threat of national and international terrorism continuing to spread, many students are choosing to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. Not only are more and more students choosing Bachelor’s degrees, but they are choosing to pursue their Criminal Justice Degrees online. With this demand, more and more colleges and universities are offering online Bachelor’s degree programs with majors in Criminal Justice online.

Students now have the ability to obtain a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice in an online program from the comfort of their own home and according to their schedule. With the Internet being accessible to almost every student, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice online is fast replacing Distance Learning Programs by mail in which course material is sent through the postal system. These Bachelor’s degrees in Criminal Justice programs online are becoming recognized as just as valid and legitimate as the traditional classroom-setting Bachelor’s degree programs.

A Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice online program offers students the opportunity to major in several different areas. For students that have obtained a prior certification or degree in Criminal justice, the Bachelor’s degree online program will further the students basic knowledge of the criminal justice system and the processes involved. Majors for Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice degrees online include Crime Scene Investigation, Paralegal Studies, and Legal Services and Court Processes, to name a few. A Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice degree online program prepares students for several options in the Criminal Justice field. Graduates will be directly involved in the Criminal Justice system through careers including Law Enforcement, prosecution and defense, incarceration and rehabilitation, assessment and supervision of criminals, social work and social services, Corporate Law and security, Homeland Security, investigations, juvenile justice facilities, and parole services.

Colorado Technical University offers a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice/Crime Scene Investigation degree online program in which student learn to document, process, and preserve physical crime scene evidence. Some Bachelor’s of Criminal Justice degree online programs require the Crime Scene Investigation student to earn credits in science subjects such as biology, chemistry, and forensic science. Students who wish to pursue a Bachelor’s in Crime Scene Investigation must posses the ability to remain calm and emotionally stable since the processing of crime scenes can be graphic and disturbing. Colorado Technical University also offers a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice online degree program with a major in Legal Studies and Court Processes in which students are prepared for work in a law office and courtroom setting. Additionally, the University of Phoenix also offers Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice online degree programs where courses cover policing, criminal law, corrections, and crime and justice in the American society. The University of Phoenix Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice online degree program also prepares students with management abilities including courses in business management, conflict resolution, and negotiation. Several colleges and universities offer accelerated studies for Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice degree online programs that can be completed by the working individual in just one to two years for students possessing an Associates degree, and in just three to four years for new students.

A majority of states have other requirements in addition to the bachelor’s degree. There is also a vast number of options in educational administration that has requirements beyond an undergraduate degree.

In order to teach on the elementary school level, you will need at least a bachelor’s degree with a major or minor in education. The additional credentials necessary to acquire a teaching license may vary from state to state. Typically there specific classes that must be passed as well as a state level exam required.

The shortage of teachers has prompted many states to offer other methods of fulfilling teacher’s license requirements. Typically, those seeking to become a teacher using an alternative method must have a bachelor’s degree in something.

Bachelor’s degrees in education concentrate on the methods and theories on the teaching practice as well as the science of education. A great deal of research, writing and thinking has gone into the teaching process. As a student of the art of education, you will be exposed to a thorough study of curriculum and teaching methods. There are other opportunities besides teaching that can open up for you with a bachelor’s degree in education.

Courses that may be included in an undergraduate degree in education may include the history of education in America, human development, and other issues that teachers may be required to handle. Classes that specifically have a teaching focus are called “content specialization” courses. For example, one school’s content specialization classes for a teaching degree geared for middle school are English and Communication, Mathematics, Social Studies and Special Education.

There are many areas of focus to choose from on both the undergraduate and graduate levels through University of Phoenix Online. The bachelor’s in education program at this university put students on a track to teaching, and is only available in Arizona. The master’s program offerings in education can open your eyes to the many career options there are in education besides teaching. For example, one focus might be administration and supervision.

A great deal of individuals who now work as executives on school boards and as principals started out as teachers. The University of Phoenix Online offers degree programs in curriculum and instruction as well as special education. Education management and school program design offer quite a few opportunities.

If you have an interest in the design and theory of education, a bachelor’s degree is the place to start. The same is also true if you desire to become a teacher. Just choose a program that will qualify you for the grade level you would like to teach.

Liberal arts majors and business majors are like oil and vinegar. They don’t exactly blend well together, but for some reason when you combine the two they are absolutely fantastic.

I learned this my final year of college when I moved into the sorority house and instantly bonded with my business major roommate, Jenny. I was an English major and the two of us were intermingled with several other girls with varying interests and educational pursuits. But for some reason, while Jenny and I were the most different, we ended up becoming almost the same.

I was messy and artistic, Jenny was organized and, I hate to admit it, a little sterile. She liked things where she liked them and anything out of place was sure to trigger a conniption. She instantly made our bills into an Excel spreadsheet and wrote out “invoices” each month to each housemate for their share of the gas, water, and…frozen waffles? Down to our grocery shopping, she inventoried everything and left me awestruck and wondering, “Who does things like that?!”

Apparently a lot of people as I met many business majors during my college years. And for some uncanny reason, they were always the ones that I hit it off with the most. My quirkiness meshed together with their straight man personality. My creativity was enhanced by their organization, and while it seems as if our worlds would collide, they seldom did.

There were a few times that we butted heads, when my dance team crashed the house and we kept the karaoke machine on a little too loud a little too late. Jenny would throw herself into a tirade about her 8 am accounting final and couldn’t we PLEASE just keep it down a bit? (Answer: no, but we will pretend to try.) And there were times I left the half eaten bowl of macaroni on the stove top and Jenny found it before I remembered I had left it there. (Truth: it was usually about three days later.) But all in all, we became the best of friends. My carefree outlook softened her anal retentive views toward college and life. Her orderly conduct encouraged me to be more responsible with money and especially with sleep. I started to value going to class more, and learned that there was more to get out of college than just the degree. The funny thing is that in a different way, I taught her that as well.

I learned from rooming with “Miss BA in Business” that sometimes the people the most unlike us are the ones that we are destined to enjoy and cherish the most in life. I’ve done my best to keep in contact with Jenny, and though I rarely see her, I’m grateful for the communication and correspondence we do have.

Jenny continues to go down the straight and narrow path. She’s made some great achievements and built a solid resume. I seem to remain all over the map. I run a dance company, work as a freelance writer, and travel the world every chance I get. While she loved her accounting firm internship, I loved my trip to Africa. We enhance each others’ lives more than I experience with my friends who are a lot like me. Cookie cutters are not always a positive thing. A flair for the variety is often the more successful of pairings.

Several online colleges and universities, such as The University of Phoenix, are trying to help by offering several health care and nursing degrees.

The American Association of College of Nursing said that the in the U.S. alone, there could be a shortage of 340,000 quailified nurses before the year 2020. That is roughly 3 times the current rate.

There are multiple reasons for the trend.

Many veteran nurses are retiring as the baby boomer generation reach retirement. Compounding the issue is the fact that people live longer now than ever before, all of which creates a greated need for health care.

There is also a problem in finding teachers to train new nursing and health care canidates. 150,000 applicants were turned down for nursing programs because of shortages in qualified nursing educators. Part of this was due to keeping qualified faculty. A recent survey of nursing faculty members reported many work close to 60 hour work weeks, due to the shortage.

Both four-year bachelors degrees and two year associates degrees in the nursing and health care fields provide a future for strong job outlook.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated that nurses will create the second largest number of new jobs among all occupations in the future. In addition to the new jobs, many existing positions are expected to open as existing health care providers retire.

In comparison, individuals with Bachelors degrees will earn over two times that amount. In addition to a better salary, a Bachelors degree allows for movement up the ranks of your employer. Many employers reward employees who continue their education by obtaining a bachelors degree.
