In the field of health care, there are doctors, nurses and then dozens of other job descriptions. As a career opportunity, the field as evolved radically with the advent of managed care. Everybody, it seems, works for some sort of large institution. That is increasingly true even for doctors, who are forming large medical groups in order to negotiate favorable terms with health insurance companies.
It is also a field very much in need of new people. The shortage of nurses is at an all time high and some large HMOs are having difficulty finding MDs to work in their organizations. However, because of the large institutions that are increasingly providing and funding health care, it is possible to find rewarding careers in the industry in any number of medical roles that do not require a health care doctorate or even a general health care degree in nursing. There are also many new opportunities for people with nursing degrees who may be interested in a management or high-tech position that requires a nursing background.
Acquiring the education for the positions opening up in today’s health care world may often be an online pursuit. Traditional educational institutions offer courses and degrees in technical medical fields. However, if you are already working and wish to change careers or move into a more skilled position in the medical field, an online program of education may be an excellent choice. Generally, it can be accomplished in a shorter time frame than at a traditional school and it can be done while you are working.
Some online schools offer degrees in medical professional areas, some offer health care certification for specific jobs, and some offer both. Colorado Technical University is an institution with five campuses and a comprehensive online program. Their online college has both a bachelor’s in health care and a health care master’s degree program, both specializing in the management of health care. As you move through their curriculum, you become eligible for certification in various areas of training within the field. Their college degrees fold certification programs into the course of study.
University of Phoenix Online has two bachelor’s programs, one of which is a degree in nursing and the other a bachelor’s in health administration. Their extensive master’s program in health care includes these degrees:
- Master of Business Administration/Health Care Management
- Master of Health Administration
- Master of Science in Nursing
- Master of Science in Nursing – Nursing/Health Care Education
- Master of Science in Nursing/Integrative Health Care
- Master of Science in Nursing/Master of Business Administration/Health Care Management
- Master of Science in Nursing/Master of Health Administration
There are two double majors listed here, one of which is an MBA in health care management combined with a master’s in nursing. The other combines a master’s in nursing and in health care administration. They also offer a doctorate in health care administration.
These degree programs are clear indicators of the need for administrative management personnel at all levels in the industry. An MBA with a nursing degree may find a job running a clinic or an assisted living facility. The other area that is burgeoning in the field is public health care. Forty million Americans have no health insurance and that number will rise every year for the foreseeable future. Administrators for public health facilities and county-run programs are high in demand.
