The health care industry is constantly growing, and with the baby boomers coming into retirement years, it will be require more and more employees in all levels of management to keep it viable. If you are looking for a new career, or perhaps for your first job out of college, the healthcare field seems to be one that holds a lot of security and interesting variations.
Healthcare managers are those responsible for keeping healthcare facilities of all kinds running smoothly. Healthcare appears to be a human service, but it is also a business and needs management to be effective. The duties of healthcare managers vary according to how and where they are employed. In hospitals, a health care management person might direct activities in nursing, surgery, therapy, health information or medical records. In smaller facilities, there will be more hands on work with personnel management, admissions and finance.
In a nursing home, a career in health care might include a larger role in resident care. There is an insurance administration arm that oversees billing and collection, budgeting, planning and providing care and assistance to patients.
Some healthcare managers specialize in areas such as physical therapy or medical records, and might be licensed physical therapists.
Healthcare managers usually work long hours, and due to the nature of their job, they may work weekends, evenings or holidays to ensure the best possible care. The salaries in this field vary from $38,000 to $109,000 with an average of $61,500.
A master’s degree in health services administration, long-term care administration, health sciences, public health, and public administration or business administration is often held by a healthcare manager. Entry-level positions might be obtained with a bachelor’s degree in healthcare, or on-the-job training in lieu of a degree.
In looking at CareerBuilder.com, a job placement service online, searching with healthcare executives as the keyword, several hundred jobs appeared all over the country. They ranged from location managers to center administrators, to V.P. of Human Resources, Controller, and Chief Executive Officer. The jobs were located in places like New York City, Erie, Pennsylvania, Roanoke, Virginia, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Frankfort, Kentucky, Marysville, California, Palo Alto, California, and Las Vegas. The highest paying job was the Director of Healthcare Insurance Outsourcing Service in Fort Worth, Texas, at an annual salary of $120,000 to $135,000 per year.
The range of jobs available to healthcare management specialists is vast and varied, and is constantly changing. As this industry continues to evolve and diversify, healthcare managers will need to evolve with it, remaining flexible, adaptable and well-educated. If you are looking for employment in an industry that is secure, dynamic and one in which you feel you are helping your fellow man, healthcare management just might be the field for you.
