Today the criminal justice field is highly diversified. There are a vast number of different positions just waiting to be filled by ready, willing and qualified individuals. Many are willing, most are ready, but there are quite a few who find themselves to be under qualified for the position they seek. What is the main qualification that most of these positions are looking for? Education is the resounding answer. No matter which field of criminal justice is examined the drive to promote individuals past the level of middle management is pushed by the search for those who are well educated.
Whether one is performing research in the field or teaching new criminal justice students there are many different managerial positions and academic positions that require a bachelor’s degree at the very least. A job in the Federal Bureau of Investigation only requires a bachelor’s degree in any field as long as the aspiring agent is fluent in another language as well as English or has three years work experience. If they do not possess these qualifications then they must have a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a law degree. In comparison, the ATF and DEA both require a bachelor’s degree, but they do not have to be in the criminal justice field as far as entry level positions go.
A police officer is one of the most common members of the criminal justice field. Most of these positions are considered civil service so little education beyond a high school diploma has been traditionally required. Now a good many law enforcement bodies are beginning to encourage continued education especially in the criminal justice area. When one examines the court system they will find that bailiffs are normally deputy sheriffs and as such will fall under the same requirements as the local police officers. The court clerks, however, are usually required to have some degree of training in the criminal justice field. Whether it be a college degree or a certification will be up to the court to which they apply.
The position of probation officer may differ in job requirements from state to state and county to county. In most likelihood the position will require a degree of some sort in either criminal justice or social work. In order to move into higher management in this particular corner of the field a master’s degree in criminal justice will most likely be the degree of choice. The same goes for correctional treatment specialists. It is highly likely that these positions will also require a higher degree of education.
No matter the job that is chosen in the criminal justice field, the odds are that a degree will be required in order to advance past middle management. It is easy to see why the largest part of criminal justice classes today are full of current officers who are looking to grow beyond the lower levels of the criminal justice field.
