A qualified financial planner plays a very important role in the present world. He/she helps people in planning and organizing their finances. It is a rewarding career both financially and morally. It entails helping people plan their expenses such that they have a safe and secured retired life, or helping people plan their finances so that they can bear the college expenses of their children. Besides the personal satisfaction of being able to help people, this career is financially beneficial also. And make yours future and safe.
For a career like this, you will require great interpersonal skills and a resume to match. You are also required to know investments, taxes, estate planning. Along with this, you should also listen to the needs and requirements of your clients.
If you do not possess an undergraduate or gradate degree in the accounting or finance related area, enroll and obtain one. In case you are unable to enroll in a regular course, you can always get the degree from some very good universities which offer online courses in finance related topics. Search online for such universities and enroll. The courses are generally of 1 year to 1 and a half year, if you possess work experience.
Next important step is to qualify as a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). This is done by passing an exam which covers 175 topics on investing and financial planning. A number of courses and study aids are available to help you achieve this.
Financial planners are either compensated on a per hour basis or they work on commission or both. You can act as money managers on behalf of your clients and make investments for them. You can also just provide advice to your clients. Recent study has revealed that the average salary for financial planners was $55100.
A number of publications and periodicals are available to understand the different functions of a financial planner and if this profession suits you. Some of them are “Becoming a Financial Planner,” by Mary Kusske, “How to Become a Successful Financial Consultant,” by Jim Ainsworth, and “Bloomberg” publications.
Financial planning is rated as one of the 20 hottest professions by U.S. News & World Report. Approximately 250,000 financials are present in the United States alone. IDS Financial Services, a division of American Express is the largest company of financial planners.
It is estimated that about 4,000,000 U.S. households have a net worth in excess of $1,000,000. This estimate is done by PSI. There are ample opportunities if you have the will power, motivation and most of all an interest in financial planning as a career. So do some soul searching and embark on this worthwhile career.
