Health Information Technology - Associate
The Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Technology is designed to prepare candidates in the professional knowledge and skills which will qualify them for employment in a health care facility.
Upon completion of the program, graduates are able to demonstrate:
- A working knowledge of the national diagnosis and procedural coding systems (ICD and CPT-HCPC )
- A working knowledge to abstract and code from a medical record
- Understanding of HIPPA and EMR (electronic medical records)
- Knowledge of insurance processing and the claims appeal process
- The ability to manage patient accounts and monitoring reimbursement
Graduates are eligible to sit for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) examination.
Mandates from all levels of government have generated a high demand for trained professionals in the field of health information technology, including medical administrative assistants, front office coordinators, medical receptionists, insurance and billing specialists, coding specialists, and insurance auditors.

This program's externship will be conducted in a workplace consistent with the requirements of the program and the expectations of the profession. The externship will be administratively tracked and documented in a virtual classroom.
