Medical Assisting (Diploma)

The Associate of Science degree program in Medical Assisting provides students with an academic program that leads to employment as an entry-level Medical Assistant with basic skills in both the administrative and clinical components of an ambulatory health care facility. Graduates of this program should also have the skills necessary to function as phlebotomists, ECG technicians, hospital ward clerks, insurance coders, hospital admissions assistants, and chiropractic assistants. Graduates of the program are eligible to become Registered Medical Assistants and are eligible to take other certification tests in areas such as phlebotomy, EKG, and medical billing and coding.

The Associate of Science degree in Medical Assisting is meant for students who wish to combine the skills of a medical assistant with the benefits of an academic associate of science degree. Emphasis in this program is on patient-centered skills. The associate of science degree program requires a minimum of 90 credits to complete.

Southern Technical College also offers a Medical Assisting 9 month diploma program which is designed to prepare students for employment as a medical assistant in a physician's office or clinic. Training is provided in both clinical and administrative duties. This fast paced program focuses on teaching students, through a combination of classroom, laboratory, and clinical experiences, the skills necessary to be successful as a medical assistant.
