I have seen a lot of kids at my school renting textbooks online from places like Chegg. Has anyone used this service before? Does it really save money?

I've used it before, mostly for math textbooks that are way expensive new but worth crap when you try to sell them back. It worked out pretty well.

Cleveland State University just recently started renting text books. Sometimes it saves you a ton of money, but other times it's only $5 less. So, it's a toss up. Just make sure you review the renting policy before you commit and see if there are better deals online. Overall, I think it's a good idea, but I'm still not completely sold on renting unless it's a good deal. It's the best alternative if you can't find a used book.

When you rent books, can you still underline, highlight, make notes in the margins, and things like that? If not, I'd rather just buy used textbooks unless it was a certain book that would save you a ton of money.

I would think they wouldn't want you to mark in them, but I am not much of a highlighter anyway. I prefer to write notes on paper or type them out because then I actually have to process the information.

No, because then they wouldn't be able to rent it to some other person. Would you want to rent a textbook that had a ton of markings in it?
