OK so she is only in 7th grade- but has hopes to own her own pastry shop someday. A large one. She told me that she would not need to go to college.
I told her she is sadly mistaken. In order to own your own business you should major in business or business management. After all who will run the company.

if she is passionate about pastries, and wants to own a large pastry shop, she can accomplish that without a degree
I know so many business school graduates that did NOTHING once they finished their degree
I know a whole bunch of successful business people that never went to college

college can help a whole lot, but it is not a must in all cases

I agree that she can be a pastry chef without a degree. She is going to culinary school though- if she sticks with this as her career. I was thinking with wanting to run her own business she will need to major or at least minor in Business- I could be totally off base though.

are there any larger bakery/pastry companies around you?
she can always ask to volunteer there.

they won't pay her, it would be child labor, but they can use her, and she can learn a lot.

have you considered that option?
this way, you will also discover if she really likes it - in time, she'll show you either way

Having a degree on something is always important. Imagine something goes wrong with her dream... It's always good to have some sort of "other option" and this days, having a degree is like having a car.

I have a friend at church that owns a very large bakery
I can provide you with a link if you want to look at them

I remember when he started out, it was a small establishment
Through the years, they had good days and bad.

Today he is very successful, with contracts for Hyatt hotels, and numerous airlines.
A great story.

He completed a degree.
