I saw a news interview with MBA students who were worried about the affect that the US economy might have on their employment prospects. Do you think the emphasis in MBA programs will shift from corporate employment to self employment?

I don't think so. I think that people with MBA's have a better chance of getting a job than someone without a degree. It's a tough economy right now- but I do think that employers will hire someone with the higher education.
I also think that a person needs to be sure it's worth it- To spend that much money on an MBA program- Will the payoff (salary) be worth it?

MBA's always had a hard time finding work.
There are a lot of them, the competition is great, and most companies will start them at the bottom of the letter.

I speak from experience. I have a brother that finished his MBA with straight A's.
It was still tough in the beginning.

This oudns like the self employment option might be more lucrative. Companies are usually more than happy to have a freelancer that doesn't require health insurance, worker's compensation, and having to grapple with with holding taxes.

that is very possible
and plus, as a self-employed individual you will not really need that many school credentials in order to get work
