Why do you even need to have a degree to go into retail. Anyone can be a cashier or a salesperson. I suppose you could work your way up to management, but sometimes I wonder if some of these store managers really have a college degree. Some seem to be very young and inexperienced.

College degrees don't prepare you for the real world or real jobs unless you do an internship as part of your degree so you shouldn't always equate no experience with no education. If you want to stay a cashier your whole life you won't need a degree but anything higher than that a degree will put you ahead of those that don't have one.

I think a retail position does not require a degree. It's a position that relies more on experience than anything else. Even managers can work their way up the ladder without getting a degree.

No they can't. Not nowadays. To become a manager in retail now you are probably going to need a degree to be taken seriously. And even then, you won't go past manager. You will sit your life as a retail manager.

You need both in retail. Practical experience is very valuable, of course, but so is an education. When you have a degree, it is also an indicator that you have what it takes to learn what you lack in the area of "real world experience."

I think sometimes having a degree might actually hurt your chances of getting a job in retail, because they (the bosses) can't take advantage of you like they can with high school students/college drop-outs/etc.
