Being able to correctly answer common interview questions is critical to your success. Not knowing how to answer interview questions will seriously impede your chances of landing the job. There are definitely proper ways to answer a job interview questions and things you should never say. Let’s review how to answer common questions.

“Tell me a little about yourself?”

You have to remember that this isn’t a date. Employers do not care you have a spouse, 2.5 kids, a dog and a kitty cat. What they really want to know about is your professional and educational background.

The proper way to answer this question is to summarize your education and your career/skills. End it with how you are the right fit for the job because of your qualifications. They want to know about your professional life – not your personal life.

“Why are you a good fit for the job?”

This question should be answered using concrete examples of your success and how it relates to the position. It’s the classic case where you need to show, rather than tell, about how great you are.

Never answer the question with generalized statements about how you are a team player, a hard worker, and so on. This is just annoying filler and hyperbole that shows the interviewer(s) you have little to offer in the way of real substance.

This is your chance to shine by telling about specific successes and then making the connection on how those past successes translate to future success within the job you are applying for.

“Why do you want this position?”

Never talk about the high pay, benefits, and paid time off! This shows that you are only interested in yourself. It also shows you are more interested in not working. This is your chance to show that you have done some research about the company. This is the time to talk about characteristics of the company that you like as well as projects the company is working on that you have researched. You want to talk as specific as possible. No annoying generalities and hyperbolic statements.

You also need to mention how you are a great fit because of X and Y. You need to tell them you want the position because all of your experience and character traits are a perfect fit. This question is all about showing you want to work for this company and that you are the right fit for the job.

Follow these tips and you will shine through like an interview pro!
