Let’s face it. Most people are on a fairly tight budget when they’re in college. That goes for on-campus and online students. The good thing is you’re investing in your future so it won’t always have to be that way. For right now though, you probably are on a tight budget and could use some easy ways to save money now. Below are some easy ways to save money while in college that you can implement right away. The results will save you hundreds of dollars per month.

Coupons

Couponing is huge these days. Why? Because it works! All you need to get started in the Sunday newspaper and the internet. Both are great places to find coupons. The key to couponing is to only buy the things that you are going to use. It just doesn’t make sense to spend money on something you don’t need just to get a good deal. There are great sites all over the internet you can go to in order to learn how to save major cash with coupons.

Ditch the Cell Phone

It just doesn’t make sense for a college student of any age to be strapped for money yet be paying for expensive cell phone plans for their expensive phone. Being a financial genius doesn’t mean you know the most about money. It means doing the common sense thing that will save you money. In fact, financial expert Dave Ramsey says that being great with money is 20% knowledge and 80% behavior. Ditch the pricey iPhone and data plan and go with a cheaper free phone and base plan.

Lattes

A tall latte at a major coffee chain can cost you close to $5 a day. That adds up to $150 a month! Try making coffee at home – it tastes great, and will save you a lot of cash.

Use a Shopping List

The biggest place where college students and families can save money is by using a shopping list and sticking to it. Going to the grocery store without a list is dangerous because it is too easy to buy things that you do not need. Create a list, stick to it, and don’t go to the store if you’re hungry.

Invite Friends Over Instead of Eating Out

Another area where you can save huge money is dining out. The average American family spends $300-$800 a month dining out! Set a budget of dining out and stick to it. Also, invite friends over for a fun time dining in.
