Internships and Job Opportunities in the South

By Brenda on June 16th, 2011

Atlanta is known as the business hub of the south and has one of the largest concentrations of Fortune 500 companies than any other city in the nation.  With so many businesses and lucrative companies, Atlanta offers a wide range of job opportunities and internships.

Impressive corporations are headquartered in Atlanta and with these companies bring employment opportunities.  Below is a list of the most desirable companies to work for:

  • Cable News Network or CNN
  • The Coca Cola Company
  • Delta Airlines
  • Sun Trust Banks
  • The Home Depot
  • United Parcel Service (UPS)

Aside from employment opportunities with the Fortune 500 Companies listed above, there are highly sought after internships that can open the door for future employment.  These positions are competitive among college graduates who are seeking post-grad employment options.

With Atlanta’s economy thriving due to new businesses being brought in, employment is on the rise.  Atlanta is a fast growing city with a population that has steadily increased over 40% since the 1980s.  Aside from the plethora of Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies in the city, Atlanta’s recently launched marketing campaign to brand the city in a new and exciting way contributes to the area’s growth.

With growth on the rise, job opportunities and internship openings continue to increase.  Some of the most thriving industries include:

  • Healthcare
  • Public relations
  • News media
  • Information technology
  • Research and development
  • Marketing

Students are beginning to major in these areas of specialty in order to follow the growing trend for employment.  Going where the need is highest oftentimes makes employment more secure even during hard economic times.

Business has become a popular major in most colleges in the Atlanta area because of the number of Fortune 500 companies per capita.  However, the more specific the major, the better the result of finding a job right out of college.  Recent studies show that a general business major is less likely to find a job immediately following graduation than a business and marketing major or an international business major with Japanese minor.  The more specific the major the more likely a job will be secured post graduation.

Summer internships are also available in Atlanta at most major companies and provide opportunities for full-time internships and part-time and full-time employment.  Students attending college can take the summer off from class work and apply their classroom training in the field, lab or office.  Students who participate in a summer internship one year may return the following summer if their work was satisfactory.

Summer internships may work into full time employment if the student excels and makes good relationships with those in superior positions.  An internship does not guarantee future employment but does set the individual apart from their competition.

For example, Chevron, Atlanta’s petroleum company hires interns to fulfill some of their entry level tasks.  Internships at Chevron’s Atlanta headquarters include such engineering areas as:

  • Mechanical
  • Civil
  • Chemical
  • Electrical
  • Petroleum

Most of these internships are offered during the summer and are provided at six-month intervals and assignments.  As with most internships, students gain hands-on experience that they would not normally participate in while sitting in a lecture hall.  The internship programs at Chevron are geared to allow the college students to explore job opportunities at the company.

Whether looking for a full time job or internship option, Atlanta has a lot of opportunity.  The city’s population growth combined with its business foundation makes it one of the leading areas for employment.
