Colorectal cancer is the third most common cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., says Carol Burke, MD of the Cleveland Clinic. Thanks to heightened awareness and improved screening initiatives, deaths from colorectal cancer have been steadily declining since the 1980’s. Nurses who care for patients with colorectal cancer and other gastrointestinal diseases are called gastroenterology nurses. LPN to BSN program students are studying to improve the lives of patients who suffer from colorectal cancer, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and other life-altering conditions.
Gastroenterology Nurses Work in a Variety of Roles and Settings
As graduates of the LPN to BSN program, alumni are qualified to work in several types of health care settings:
- Physician Offices that employ LPN to BSN program graduates
- Inpatient and Outpatient Endoscopy Departments that employ LPN to BSN program graduates
- Ambulatory Endoscopy Centers that employ LPN to BSN program graduates
- Inpatient Hospital Units that employ LPN to BSN program graduates
Once employed at a health care facility, LPN to BSN program graduates may assume the following roles:
- Performing gastroenterology nursing screening procedures
- Handling gastroenterology nursing case management
- Managing gastroenterology nursing equipment
- Providing gastroenterology nursing patient education
LPN to BSN Program Alumni may Pursue Advanced Certification in Gastroenterology
Advanced certification in gastroenterology is available through the Certifying Board of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates. This volunteer, nonprofit organization offers certification to LPN to BSN program alumni with appropriate qualifications, including:
- RN license
- 2 years of full-time nursing experience within the past 5 years
- 2 verification signatures that testify to nursing work experience and nursing professional qualifications
- Successful completion of a 150 multiple choice gastroenterology nursing exam
