Online education has taken huge leaps and bounds in terms of offering quality education. Now, students who feel they are called to teach the young people of this country can now earn their degree online. Many schools now offer online elementary education and secondary education degrees. Students who graduate from these accredited programs can become licensed teaching professionals that are ready to make an impact on the future generations.

Students should be aware that the coursework is done completely online but they do need to complete a student teaching experience in an actual classroom. Most teaching experiences are full-time and last between 12 and 20 weeks. Students will be hosted by a licensed teacher and have a faculty member who oversees their teaching experience.

Students should also note that they will have to take additional exams required for state licensure depending on the state that they plan on teaching in. Some test include the WEST-B and Praxis.

Typical Classes

Elementary education classes focus on teaching methodology and practice. Students learn about theory then learn how it applies in the classroom. Students will write several papers, prepare lesson plans, create thematic units, and learn classroom management. Students should be prepared for a lot of interaction with their instructors and their classmates. Elementary education is best learned through collaborative learning experiences.

Typical classes include:

  • Teaching methodology
  • Students with disabilities
  • Lesson planning
  • Classroom discipline
  • Technology in the classroom
  • Teaching math
  • Teaching reading

Students who have an associate’s degree from an accredited institution can finish the degree in two years time based upon full-time enrollment. The great thing about an online education degree is that students can also choose to attend full-time or part-time. Students can earn their bachelor’s degree in education without moving, quitting their job, or neglecting their family.

Once students earn their bachelor’s degree in education from an accredited online institution they will be ready to apply for jobs. Students should ensure that the school is accredited at the regional or national levels. The best education programs are accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. This ensures that public and private elementary schools will readily accept your degree.

After graduation students can either apply for a elementary education teaching job or go into a master’s program. Most online schools that offer the bachelor’s degree also offer a master’s degree in education.
