Nurses with DoctorRegistered nurses are expected to have the second largest number of new jobs of all occupations through the year 2014, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Nursing professionals are increasingly relied upon to perform complex roles in health care as the American population ages and requires more patient care. In order to cope with increased responsibilities and take advantage of a broader career field, many registered nurses are choosing to attend an online program RN to BSN at an accredited online nursing school. Earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing allows registered nurses to specialize and practice in more complex environments, such as hospital emergency rooms.

Working as a Registered Nurse in Emergency Care

Graduates of online program RN to BSN schools who choose to specialize in emergency care typically work in hospital emergency departments. However, there are several options for an emergency care nurse i.e. working at an emergency outpatient clinic or working as a flight nurse, caring for patients in life flight transfers to a medical facility. An emergency care nurse treats patients with life-threatening conditions and injuries, including car accidents, heart attacks, and strokes. Graduates of online program RN to BSN schools work as part of the health care team often in cooperation with physicians, surgeons, and other health care professionals. Due to the nature of the work, emergency care nurses may work night and weekend shifts as well as overtime in order to meet patient care needs.

Required Education to Become an Emergency Care Nurse

Although registered nurses may legally practice with a hospital diploma, associate’s degree, or bachelor’s degree in nursing, employers more often prefer nurses to have a bachelor’s degree in nursing at a minimum. The number of registered nurses who had earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing as their highest level of education was a mere 22% in 1980. By the year 2000, that number grew to 32. % and continues to rise today. Attending an online program RN to BSN school for a bachelor’s degree in nursing teaches communication, leadership, and critical thinking skills that are becoming essential in today’s health care environment. Registered nurses who wish to specialize in a particular area of health care now typically need a bachelor’s degree in nursing to be competent in their field of choice.

Qualities Needed for Success as an Emergency Care Nurse

In general, nurses need to be caring, sympathetic, responsible, and detail-oriented. Emergency care nurses especially need to be emotionally stable in order to deal with job stresses, such as crises, emergencies, and human suffering. Internship and on-the-job training while completing an online program RN to BSN curriculum is necessary to gain the practical work experience required to practice as an emergency care nurse.

Thanks to advanced technology, enrolling in an online program RN to BSN school has become easier than ever before. Online nursing schools, such as the University of Phoenix and Kaplan University, have designed programs especially for working registered nurses. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Kaplan University also allows students to specialize in a preferred area of practice while working towards an online nursing degree.
