The growth in enrollment of on-line learning schools continues to outpace the enrollment of students in traditional colleges and universities. Enrollment in online courses averages around 22% percent growth rate over the past five years, in contrast there was only a 1.5% enrollment rate increase for the rest of the college and university population.
One out of every five college students takes one or more online classes as reported by a study over over 2,000 colleges and universities. A recent study shows that on-line course enrollment rose by 10% in the last quarter of 2006, approximately 3.5 million student. Over 3 million student were enrolled in on-line courses in the fourth quarter of 2005.
The survey demonstrate the importance of on-line learning. On-line students account for more than 20% of the higher education population. On-line learning is now playing a bigger role in American education than ever before.
