Many people feel they have missed their chance to go to college if they do not enroll right after high school. That’s certainly not the case. It’s never too late to back to college at any age. With all of the learning options – including online college, the thing that usually keeps people from getting their degree is them. Let’s take a look at the reasons to go back to college as an adult.

Increase your income

The best way to increase your income is to go to college and get a degree. Whether it’s to complete your first or second degree – the road to the top is paved with diplomas. What’s more likely to happen – you win the lottery, you come up with a great invention, or you work hard, go to college and get a promotion?

Even if you go back to school at 35 and finish when you’re 40, you still have a good 30 years of work left. Let’s say without a degree you average a salary of $35,000 a year for the last 30 years of your career. That equals $1,050,000 over that time. But what if you average a salary of $70,000 because you went to college? That’s a total of $2,100,000. Wouldn’t you like an extra million dollars? Of course you would. You see, graduating from college raises your ability to move up and obtain high paying positions. Long gone are the days when you just need experience. Today’s formula for work success is experience + college degree.

Enjoy your career

Studies have found that people who are in a challenging career that they enjoy are much happier. Those types of careers are typically only achievable with a college degree. Who do you know that absolutely loves their minimum wage, dead end job? College gives you the option of finding a job you actually enjoy. Our careers give us meaning and purpose. A person with purpose is happy. A person without purpose is miserable. Period.

Role model

Leadership expert John Maxwell says that people, especially kids, do what they see rather than what they are told. Do you want your kids to go to college? Well then you better enroll. 90% of kids whose parents did not graduate from college will not graduate either. You have to plow the road for them. If you do it – chances are they will too. Maxwell calls it the “Law of the Picture.” People do what they see not what they are told.
