Social scientists, including sociologists, have one of the highest education levels of all professions. Approximately 50% of professionals with a career in sociology work for federal, state, and local governments. A student entering a career with a sociology degree may help governments solve social problems and develop public policy or may alternately choose to pursue a career in management, sales, or teaching. The potential for a career with a degree in sociology is as wide as the discipline itself.

The Discipline of Sociology

Sociology is the study of society and human social interaction. It is concerned with social dynamics and the effects of groups on individuals. Professionals with a career in sociology focus on groups as small as the family and as large as the global population. The following several specializations are possible with a sociology career: Education Family Social Psychology Political Sociology Gender Relations Gerontology Criminology Demography. Career Options with an Undergraduate Sociology Degree

According to the American Sociological Association, students entering a career with a sociology degree have increased competitiveness over other liberal arts majors pursuing similar positions. Possible entry-level jobs include research assistant, administrative aide, and management or sales trainee. Students may also pursue a teaching career with a sociology major at the elementary or secondary school level. Additional education classes are necessary for students who wish to enter teaching as a career.

Some students who wish to pursue a career with a degree in sociology choose to attend programs such as Ashford University’s Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management with a specialization in Sociology. Ashford University boasts that its graduates are prepared to enter sales, retail, small business management, government, and nonprofit jobs.

Career Options with an Advanced Sociology Degree

A graduate degree in sociology allows a student to further specialize in a career in sociology. Graduate degree alumni may be able to teach at a community college. A sociology career in a higher academic setting usually requires a PhD in sociology, which allows a professional to pursue a sociology career in research and teaching at the university level. The majority of a specialized career in sociology involves academic research and writing within a university setting. The results of professionals’ sociology career research serve to assist government agencies, lawmakers, and educators in solving social problems and forming public policies.

Job Outlook for Sociologists

For the professional who chooses a specialized career in sociology, job growth is expected to be only as high as 8% through the year 2014. This is, in large part, due to the limited employment options outside of the government and university setting. Professionals pursuing a specialized career in sociology are expected to find the most opportunities in policy and research positions.

For professionals who choose to pursue an alternate career with a sociology degree, job prospects are expected to grow faster. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that Human Resources, Training, and Labor Relations Managers will experience an 18 – 26% increase in employment through the year 2014. Other specific management careers may also be viewed at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics website.

Students interested in pursuing a career in sociology may contact Ashford University. College-Pages.com is another valuable source of information with an extensive list of available programs, as well as education and career resources.

Few can forget the hype that surrounded the release of Stephen Lundin’s Fish! in 2000. The revolutionary book became an addition to nearly every manager’s library. Large corporations, such as Sodexho, made Fish! required reading for all company managers. The effective advice from the book stemmed from a fish market where enthusiasm and respect for human factors in the workplace made it a profitable success as well as a fun place to work.

Programs such as the Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management at Ashford University are honing in on the human side of management in order to prepare its graduates for success in the job market. According to Ashford University, human factors of management include:

understanding group dynamics

ethics

human resources issues

effective communication

The program has been specifically designed for professionals who already have some work experience in their field of choice and wish to further develop their management skills.

With over 30 areas of concentration available within the Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management program, Ashford University graduates go on to develop a variety of careers. Many choose to go into sales, retail, small business management, government, or non-profit organizations. Some graduates also choose to start a business, or work with the local, state, or federal government.

Professionals who wish to further specialize in the human side of management may wish to choose psychology as their area of concentration within the Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management program. Up to twelve credits of psychology courses may be transferred into the program, allowing students to keep the value of previously earned education credits. In fact, up to 75 credits total may be transferred into the 120-credit program in order to speed entry into a career of choice.

Graduates with a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management are expected to enter a profession that will grow faster than average. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that Human Resources, Training, and Labor Relations Managers will experience an 18 – 26% increase in employment through the year 2014. Other specific management careers may also be viewed at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics website.

When seeking graduates for entry level positions, some employers look for professionals trained in the human side of management, while others look for professionals with a more technical, business-minded background. Students attending the Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management program at Ashford University have the advantage of training in both aspects. This is an important factor in allowing graduates to enter the workforce with a competitive edge in the midst of numerous qualified graduates and experienced workers in the field.

Students who are interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management may contact Ashford University for more information. College-Pages.com is also a valuable resource that contains a complete list of available programs and additional informational resources.

Early childhood education is generally defined as educational programs for children from infancy through the age of eight. As a practical matter, the term is often assumed to refer to activities for pre-school children, from birth through kindergarten. While education professionals often assume the former, the general public may think that the term is basically referring to pre- schoolers. The result is occasional confusion.

Early childhood education jobs of all types require certification just as is the case for teachers at all other levels. There are several levels of certification available for those who wish to work in this field: teacher, teacher’s aide, day-care worker and others, depending upon the state in which you wish to qualify. In most states, to work as a teacher you will need a minimum of a bachelor’s degree plus course work in a training program for early childhood education. Often these credentials require course work focusing on a particular area, such as special needs children, pre-school or day care age group, and school-age children.

The online resources for early childhood education range from certification courses all the way through the range of higher education degrees. University of Phoenix Online offers a bachelor’s degree in education with a specialization in elementary education. They also have a master’s in education with a focus on early childhood education. University of Phoenix Online has an extensive list of continuing education classes for teachers, some of which are no doubt applicable to the requirements for an ECE certificate.

Ashford University offers a bachelor’s degree in organizational management with a specialty in child study. This degree would be an excellent foundation for a professional position that focuses on early childhood education. Course work includes, among others, cognitive development, family studies, childhood development and group behavior.

Associate’s degrees in early childhood education are available online. Bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate programs in education are also found online and some of them offer specialization in early childhood education. This area of focus differs from standard teaching programs in that it concentrates heavily on the psychology of dealing with young children. Group dynamics, child behavior and misbehavior, the use of objects such as puppets for educational purposes – this sort of study is the root of early childhood education. Mathematics, science and English sometimes take a back seat to the classroom psychology issues that are critical to understanding children new to the environment.

Pre-school certification is another area of study that is available through the Internet. This area of early childhood education is as heavily monitored by most states as are the schools in general. Pre-school operators must meet standards for their facility and their employees must meet educational standards just as teachers in the school system. Pre-school early childhood education is a profession that works well with online study, except for any student teacher requirements that may exist. Often an online college will have made student teacher arrangements in some of the geographical areas where they are accredited.

Online early childhood education study requires some study on your part. Determine what area(s) you may wish to work in and explore the certification requirements in your state. Then turn to the internet for your degree.

Perhaps thirty years ago, a liberal arts bachelor’s degree was enough to draw consideration for at least an entry-level position in the business world. Fifteen years ago, the same level of graduate work was required to move up the ladder to any significant degree. Today, many undergraduates begin their freshman year thinking ahead to a field of graduate study and select an undergraduate major to match anticipated graduate studies.

What will get you where you want to go? Is it a BS in Economics, with an MBA? Or is it perhaps a bachelor’s degree in international finance, with a law degree to top it off? Many ambitious young people, who are willing to spend the years and take out the loans, design their educations in just such a fashion. One of the best choices for a four-year degree is the bachelor’s degree in business administration.

This degree serves a number of purposes. It is an excellent door-opener for entry- level opportunities in the corporate world following graduation. It is a catch-all category that can fit you into project management, marketing, accounting and other business operations niches with equal ease. It is also a degree that provides the opportunity to focus on specialties within the corporate world.

Westwood College offers two focal areas in its Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration program: Accounting and Marketing and Sales. Ashford University has a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Management. Kaplan University offers a BS in Business Administration with a focus on Information Systems Management. You can emerge from your four-year period of study with a highly specialized bachelor’s degree in business administration which, to some human resources departments, will add up to a bachelor’s in business with additional educational experience enclosed.

It is also an excellent foundation for graduate study. The obvious choice is using a bachelor’s in business administration as a launching pad for an MBA. However many undergraduates are hearing from their counselors that a degree in business administration is also an excellent feeder for graduate work in international relations, international finance, and even law.

Many attorneys who choose not to join a law firm will opt for a role within a corporate structure. A general counsel to any corporation will need to understand the operational structure of their employer and the business world in general. The same is true of attorneys who join large firms that specialize in business law. Graduates emerging from law school face the same job hunting challenge that newly-minted college graduates face. For a corporate law firm, an attorney with an educational background in business is going to have instant value at the entry level.

Individuals are always needed in the area of science and math education. Those students interested in science careers and who strive to attain advanced science degrees are currently, and always will be, in high demand.

In order to obtain a bachelors degree in the sciences field, a student must already have earned an associates degree in the program of study and also have access to a lab. This is why for the few core sciences, online teaching can only be part of the education package. Some traditional schools offer physics courses online, but there aren’t any that have yet graduated to providing an entire degree program online.

There are online math degrees available as well. Most of them are offered by traditional schools that have developed online affiliates, as distance learning has become widely popular.
