Management analysts, or management consultants, are expected to see more than a 27% increase in job openings through the year 2014, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. As of 2004, there were already 605,000 workers in the management analyst field. Enrolling in a campus or online management degree program is a promising way to get started in this lucrative industry.

What is a Management Analyst?

A graduate of a campus or online management degree program who chooses to specialize as a management analyst is responsible for presenting ways to improve a company’s structure, efficiency, and profits. Management analysts with a bachelor business degree in management may work with other management analysts as a team or autonomously with the company’s managers. Sample projects a management analyst could undertake include creating an improved inventory control system for a new small business or making recommendations to a larger company as to how to increase worker efficiency and decrease work overlap. A management analyst who has graduated from a campus or online management degree program may pursue self-employment or potentially find employment in the private sector or the government.

Required Education to be a Management Analyst

At a minimum, professionals who wish to become management analysts must earn a campus or online bachelor degree business management diploma. Schools, such as Kaplan University, offer an online management degree program specifically designed for working professionals. Other skills may be required that are specific to the industry that a management analyst chooses to enter. Many employers prefer management analysts to pursue a graduate degree in business or a related discipline. However, entry-level employment in a government management analyst position may be obtained without a graduate degree.

Between 1980 and 2000, the percentage of Registered Nurses holding a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) rose from 22% to 32%. The number of BSN graduates continues to rise today as employers more often prefer to hire nurses with a bachelor degree. These 5 important reasons to earn a BSN are encouraging LPN’s, LVN’s, and RN’s to head back to school.

1. BSN Graduates Enter One of the Fastest-Growing Careers in the Nation

RN’s are expected to have the second largest number of new job openings in the nation through the year 2014, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, an aging population, more critically ill hospitalized patients, and an aging RN workforce is contributing to the increased demand for RN’s. RN’s with a BSN are expected to have the best opportunities in the job market.

2. BSN Graduates have a Wider Scope of Practice

Compared to RN’s with a hospital diploma or associate degree in nursing, RN’s who possess a BSN have a wider scope of practice in a variety of settings. Specialized fields, such as emergency care, intensive care, diabetes education, and pediatrics require specialized knowledge that is not readily available in nursing programs below the BSN level.

3. BSN Graduates Earn a Higher Salary

More education translates into higher wages and salaries. In 2000, the federal Division of Nursing found that nurses with advanced education nursing degrees earned up to $10,000 more annually than the median income for all RN’s.

4. BSN Graduates have Access to Leadership and Management Opportunities

BSN graduates are able to climb the career ladder much easier than their co-workers with less education. Case management, clinical leadership, and policy development positions are typically reserved for RN’s who have at least a BSN.

5. BSN Graduates Experience High Levels of Career Purpose and Satisfaction

Many nurses cite important factors that contribute to their high level of career satisfaction. A 2004 Nurse Worklife Satisfaction Survey revealed appreciation by patients and an atmosphere of teamwork as positive contributions to RN’s who wish to continue in their current profession.

Prospective BSN students may visit College-Pages.com, the leading education and career resource website for a complete list of bachelor of science in nursing programs. Students will also find links to informative articles for making education and career decisions in the field of nursing.

Between 2001 and 2010, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the fastest growing occupations will be those that require an associate of arts degree. Currently, over 400,000 associate in arts degrees are awarded to U.S. students every year. These students go on to either directly enter the work force or pursue further education towards a career of choice.

Why Choose an Associate’s Degree in General Studies?

One of the popular areas of study for students in pursuit of a general associate degree is general studies. A general study degree gives students a broad overview of a range of topics that encourage critical thinking skills. For example, the Associate of Arts in General Studies at the University of Phoenix Online offers courses in social sciences, life sciences, communications andhumanities. For students who are undecided on a career or a major of study, an associate of arts in general study program is a way to gain exposure to an array of subjects of interest. General study programs offer a basic educational foundation to better prepare students for the work force or to enter a more specialized bachelor’s degree program in the future.

Entering the Work Force with an Associate of Arts in General Studies

According to the Occupational Outlook Quarterly from the Department of Labor, many employers actually prefer to hire workers who have an associate of arts degree. This translates into significant advantages for students who opt to enter the work force with an associate of arts degree. The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that in 2001, a worker with an associate of arts degree earned an extra $128 per week compared to a worker with only a high school education. It also discovered that the unemployment rate for associate of arts degree graduates was 30% lower in 2001 than for high school graduates.

Pursuing Further Education with an Associate of Arts in General Studies

Students who choose to go on to apply to a four-year university after the completion of an associate of arts degree are often given preference by college admissions over an applicant who has simply taken a few semesters of college courses. This is probably in large part due to the fact that the U.S. Department of Education found associate of arts degree graduates are more likely to finish a bachelor’s degree program. Classes in liberal arts, associate degree components, along with other general study courses, often transfer into bachelor’s degree programs to satisfy up to half of the 120 credits required for completion of a bachelor’s degree program.

Earning an Associate of Arts Degree in General Studies Through Distance Education

Of those students in pursuit of an associate of arts degree, more than 9% chose to enroll in distance education programs in 1998. This number continues to rise as associate of arts degree online programs become increasingly available for working professionals. Enrolling in a general study degree online program, such as the program at the University of Phoenix Online, can allow students to maintain a salary and benefits while working towards an associate of arts degree.

Japan’s Nintendo Wii has a one-of-a-kind wireless controller. Gamers will be able to use the controller as a tennis racket, bowling ball, golf club, boxing gloves, and more. Instead of a complex series of button combinations to produce action, gamers simply tilt, swing, and point the controller. This new innovation in game art and design comes as a welcomed development for the reflex-challenged, and serves as an inspiration for anyone in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in game art and design.

Nintendo’s major competitors, Sony and Microsoft, are also busy releasing new products in the game art and design industry. Sony’s PlayStation 3 arrived in 2007 and is much more technologically advanced than the Nintendo Wii. Microsoft has recently released its Xbox 360 and has sold over millions since 2005. Game art and design has, indeed, been a booming industry since its initial explosion with the release of PONG in 1971.

However, Nintendo expects to gain a competitive edge by appealing to the mass market rather than just the serious gamer. Whereas Sony’s PlayStation 3 costs around $600, the Nintendo Wii is promised costs only $250 in the United States. Mr. Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, reported to the New York Times that Nintendo intends to expand the current market of game art and design to avoid continuing down a path that limits its appeal simply to the hard-core gamer.

Nintendo’s game artists and game designers have equipped the Wii with several unique features in order to capture Nintendo’s target market. In addition to its sleek appearance, it comes with a photo channel that allows digital photographs to be displayed on the television screen. It also comes with an interactive news and weather channel as well as internet surfing capability through the television.

Nintendo’s Wii comes as yet another advancement in the game art and design industry. Each console is sold along with a Wii sports game featuring tennis, golf, bowling, and a variety of other sports that show off the Wii’s new controller. 25 to 30 additional games will be available for sale this year as well as 30 downloadable games from the internet for the price of $5 to $10 each.

The rapidly evolving technology of Nintendo and its competitors demonstrates one of the factors behind the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ predictions for careers in game art and design. Along with the profession of software publishing, game art and design is expected to be the third fastest growing career through the year 2014. Students attending universities such as Westwood College to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Game Art and Design can count on numerous employment opportunities within the industry. Prospective students may contact Westwood College for more information or visit College-Pages.com, the education and career resource, for a complete list of available programs and additional resources.

Model maker may not sound like an official profession but, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were over 11,000 model makers employed in May 2004. One of those professionals, Duane Martinez, creates models of everything from computers and gas pumps to MP3 players. When asked to describe his work for the Occupational Outlook Quarterly he stated, “It’s a little like magic.”

A Typical Day in the Life of a Model Maker

Martinez begins the modeling process when a designer presents an idea sketched on a piece of paper. He then uses Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to help him create a three-dimensional drawing from the original two-dimensional sketch. Using his Auto CAD training, he directs specialized tools to produce basic parts for a realistic model.

Initially, Martinez makes only a foam model until the designer has expressed approval with the shape. He then goes on to create a more realistic model made out of materials like aluminum, wood, plastic, leather, rubber, stone, and titanium. For the final touches, Martinez adds paint to imitate the desired texture of the model and sometimes even reproduces mini logos.

Essential Characteristics for Success as a Model Maker

According to Martinez, a successful model maker must be able to think spatially. Model makers have to look at a two-dimensional drawing and imagine it in a three- dimensional form from any angle. A steady hand and good eyesight are also essential as the work tends to be very small and detailed. A brief overview of Martinez’s work-life reveals that model makers must have perseverance in order to finish models on time. Martinez stated that he once stayed awake for thirty-six hours just to meet a deadline.

Education and Training for Model Makers

Martinez never completed a college degree in model making. However, he has a passion for his work, which he combined with a few college courses to help him land his first job as a model maker. Another possible way to become a model maker is to complete an Associate’s Degree in Architectural Drafting such as the program offered by Westwood College. Westwood College students receive training in the latest versions of Auto CAD software and go on to be eligible for any number of Auto CAD jobs.

Additional Types of Model Makers

There are actually many types of model makers currently in the industry. Martinez designs models of consumer products. Other model makers create models to be used in the special effects of movies. Still others construct museum displays or unique awards and trophies. A professional with an Associate’s Degree in Architectural Drafting are often sought after by employers for work on small-scale models of apartment buildings or amusement parks before the real versions are built.

Where to Find More Information

More information about the profession of model making is available through the Association of Professional Model Makers. For those interested in learning more about how Auto CAD software works, there are many samples available on the internet simply by typing “Auto CAD download free software” into any search engine. Students can also contact Westwood College or visit College-Pages.com, the education and career resource, for a complete list of available programs that provide Auto CAD training.

Enrollment in computer programming schools has dropped in recent years, partly in fear of labor outsourcing and partly in response to waning student interest in math and science. While the computer programming profession continues to hold its ground, competition for available jobs with average starting salaries of $52,500 to $83,250 is high. However, technical, detail-oriented students who are able to communicate simply with others may be in a prime position to compete for desirable positions within the field.

What is a Computer Programmer?

As implied by the title, professionals who have attended a computer programming college work with computer programs. Computer programmers create, test, and maintain the programs that tell computers what to do. Professionals attend computer programming schools to learn how to create instructions for everything from financial records programs to flight simulator training programs. Computer programmers usually work alongside computer engineers and analysts. After the computer engineers or analysts complete the design process, the computer programmer translates the design into logical steps that the computer can comprehend.

Available Jobs for Computer Programmers

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the majority of professionals who have attended a computer programming college work in computer design industries. Of the 455,000 jobs held in 2004, many were also in industries such as telecommunications, software publishing, insurance, education, and government. Computer programmers typically work in comfortable office settings, but may work long hours to meet deadlines or fix problems that occur outside of normal business hours. Some professionals who have attended computer programming schools are also taking advantage of telecommuting opportunities in computer programming.

Required Education for Computer Programmers

In 2004, more than two-thirds of computer programmers held a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related discipline. As the number of qualified computer programmers rises, employers are increasingly requiring formal education. Online computer programming schools, such as Westwood College, are now offering an entire online computer programming degree at the undergraduate level. A computer programming course online can be completed from the comfort of students’ homes while maintaining work and possibly family responsibilities. Students interested in signing up for an online computer programming class may contact Westwood College for more information or visit College-Pages.com for an extensive list of available programs.

Job Outlook for Computer Programmers

The official prediction from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics for job growth in the computer programming industry is 0-8% through the year 2014. The highest number of new positions is expected to be in data–processing service firms, software houses, and computer consulting businesses. Applicants with the best prospects will be those who obtain formal bachelor’s degrees from computer programming schools combined with practical work experience. Students may also complete an online programming class to become certified in a particular programming language. One of the growing areas of emphasis in the field will be cyber–security, which will increase the demand for computer programmers who are knowledgeable in digital security issues and technology.

All over the U.S., the health care industry has reported a shortage in qualified nurses. Several online colleges and universities, such as The University of Phoenix, are trying to help by offering several health care and nursing degrees.

The American Association of College of Nursing said that the in the U.S. alone, there could be a shortage of 340,000 quailified nurses before the year 2020. That is roughly 3 times the current rate.

There are multiple reasons for the trend.

Many veteran nurses are retiring as the baby boomer generation reach retirement. Compounding the issue is the fact that people live longer now than ever before, all of which creates a greated need for health care.

There is also a problem in finding teachers to train new nursing and health care canidates. 150,000 applicants were turned down for nursing programs because of shortages in qualified nursing educators. Part of this was due to keeping qualified faculty. A recent survey of nursing faculty members reported many work close to 60 hour work weeks, due to the shortage.

Both four-year bachelors degrees and two year associates degrees in the nursing and health care fields provide a future for strong job outlook.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated that nurses will create the second largest number of new jobs among all occupations in the future. In addition to the new jobs, many existing positions are expected to open as existing health care providers retire.
