As the very name implies, nonprofit organizations make no profit. Consequently, a large portion of the organization’s labor is dependent on the time and efforts of volunteers. Juliet Orzal, Director of Volunteers recently featured in the Occupational Outlook Quarterly, manages the 50 to 100 volunteers that come to Martha’s Table on a daily basis. Orzal organizes the efforts of volunteers that make food services, day care, and tutoring programs possible through the DC based nonprofit organization.

What is a Manager of Volunteers?

A manager of volunteers finds, organizes, and trains volunteers for the necessary work of the organization. They focus on the mission of the organization to create nonprofit jobs for volunteers to fill. Another important part of the manager of volunteer’s work is thanking volunteers for fulfilling the numerous nonprofit jobs. Because the volunteers perform nonprofit jobs for free, thanks and personal satisfaction are all the payment they receive.

What types of things do Managers of Volunteers do on a daily basis?

The manager of volunteers is responsible for finding and recruiting volunteers to fill nonprofit jobs. This may include calling churches, schools, and businesses to increase awareness of a nonprofit job opportunity. It may also involve making presentations to various organizations in an attempt to discover willing volunteers for the available nonprofit jobs. Once a volunteer is recruited, the manager of volunteers then interviews each candidate in order to place them in the best nonprofit job opportunity.

Training is another vital function of the manager of volunteers. Training for nonprofit jobs may consist of just one day, or several days, of formal training classes. Often, the manager of volunteers will teach the training programs personally. The aim is to ensure that the volunteers are prepared to fulfill the nonprofit job opportunity and gain knowledge of what to expect.

Finally, the manager of volunteers serves as a vital resource for volunteers while they are working at nonprofit jobs. He or she, the manager, is responsible for making sure that volunteers have the necessary tools and knowledge to perform their duties successfully. The manager of volunteers also makes sure that the volunteers know that their work is appreciated. In addition to the regular verbal thanks, managers of volunteers are typically responsible for organizing formal events to show official thanks from the organization.

What kind of education is required to be a Manger of Volunteers?

Although there are no specific education requirements, managers of volunteers may need to be knowledgeable in a certain industry or skill set, depending on the nonprofit organization for which they work. Many managers of volunteers have a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a bachelor’s degree in social work, or a bachelor’s degree in human resource management. Increasingly, many schools are offering advanced degrees with a focus in management of nonprofit agencies. Capella University offers a Master of Science in Human Services in Management of Nonprofit Agencies as well as a PhD in Human Services in Management of Nonprofit Agencies.

Students interested in pursuing nonprofit organization jobs may contact Capella University for more information. College-Pages.com, the education resource web site, is also a valuable resource with an extensive list of available programs and education resources.

Each year over 400,000 associate’s degrees are awarded to U.S. students. As opposed to a bachelor’s degree, which requires an average of 120 college credits, an associate’s degree typically involves 60 credits or about 20 classes. Most programs can be completed in two years. Upon completion of an associate’s degree, students are prepared to either directly enter their career of choice or transfer to a four-year institution to earn a bachelor’s degree.

According to the Occupational Outlook Quarterly, a Bureau of Labor Statistics publication, the fastest growing occupations between 2001 to 2010 will be those most often requiring an associate’s degree. In fact, many employers actually prefer to hire workers who have an associate’s degree. This translates into significant advantages for students who opt to begin their higher education pursuits with an associate’s degree. The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that in 2001, a worker with an associate’s degree earned an extra $128 per week compared to a worker with only a high school education. It also discovered that the unemployment rate for associate degree holders was 30% lower in 2001 than for high school graduates.

The educational advantages of associate’s degrees are numerous as well. The most obvious and often cited advantage is the cost of the degree. Average tuition at a four-year public university was $3506 in the 2000 – 2001 academic year, whereas the cost of a community college or two-year university was only $1359. Another advantage of the associate’s degree is the opportunity for a student with low highschool grades to catch up academically. Most associate degree programs are open to anyone with a high school diploma or GED. Lastly, students who choose to go on to apply to a four-year university after the completion of an associate’s degree are often given preference by college admissions over an applicant who has simply taken a few semesters of college courses. This is probably in large part due to the fact that the U.S. Department of Education found associate degree holders are more likely to finish a Bachelor’s Degree program.

Of those students in pursuit of an associate’s degree, more than 9% chose to enroll in distance education programs in 1998. The convenience of online degree programs allows students to maintain current responsibilities while completing course work. Students interested in completing an associate’s degree program are encouraged to browse our list of degrees and schools offering associate’s degree both online and at campus locations.

Jobs for those with a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology are expected to outnumber the amount of graduates entering the work force from schools such as Capella University. Through the year 2014, the profession of Counseling Psychology is actually expected to grow faster than average according to the most recent Occupational Outlook Handbook. This comes as wonderful news for students wishing to pursue a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology.

Professionals with a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology typically help clients who are having trouble adjusting to everyday living. The government employs a whopping 4 out of 10 counselors in the U.S., and the remainder frequently works in a health services setting, such as a clinic or a hospital. A significant amount of professionals with a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology choose to forgo the job market altogether and become self- employed.

Beyond the general practice of Counseling Psychology are numerous specialties that can be pursued through a specialized course of study or a PhD in Counseling Psychology. Marriage and Family Therapists counsel clients on a variety of emotional issues to prevent individual and family crises. Substance Abuse Counselors work with people who have difficulties with alcohol, drugs, gambling, or eating disorders. Genetic Counselors work with families who have birth defects or genetic abnormalities that risk being passed on to future generations. They not only help the family to cope with the disorder itself, but they also assist the family in making decisions about the risk involved in conceiving children.

In order for a student with a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology to be a successful professional, several personal qualities are essential. The desire to help people is necessary as it is the central function of any position in Counseling Psychology. Counseling Psychologists should also be able to encourage trust, respect, and confidence from others. A client in distress must feel comfortable disclosing thoughts and problems in order for the counselor to inspire change.

Distance education programs such as those offered through Capella University have become a popular choice for students in pursuit of a Master of Science in Psychology. As students decide on a professional specialty and degree of preference, they have also begun looking for programs that accommodate current responsibilities such as work and family. A 1998 survey of governors showed that 83% agreed with the statement that “allowing students to obtain education anytime and anyplace via technology” would be a vital feature of higher education in the 21st century.

Why do high school students lack motivation in the classroom? What does the extent of a child’s vocabulary have to do with his or her reading ability? What accounts for the difference in reading capacity between two third grade students? These are but a few questions explored in the headlines of the latest issue of the Journal of Educational Psychology.

What is Educational Psychology?

Educational psychology is one of many specialties available when deciding on a degree in psychology. The discipline of educational psychology focuses on how people learn in an educational environment as well as the effectiveness of educational interventions. Educational psychology also uses social psychology to study schools as organizations and explores the psychology of teaching.

Educational Psychology vs. School Psychology

Whereas professionals with a degree in school psychology are more likely to work directly with children in educational environments, professionals with a Master of Science in Educational Psychology are heavily involved in research and academics. Educational psychology takes the outcomes of its studies and informs disciplines such as curriculum development, special education, and classroom management of its findings. For example, if educational psychology finds that children progress further in reading skills by grouping them according to similar ability levels, a first- grade teacher may then take that knowledge and divide her class into small groups during reading time.

Steps to Becoming an Educational Psychologist

In order to officially enter the field of educational psychology, a professional must first earn a Master of Science in Educational Psychology or a similar graduate degree. Psychology graduate schools, such as Capella University, offer focused programs in educational psychology that include classes in lifespan development, research methods, child psychology, and adult learning. A student can complete the Master of Science in Educational Psychology entirely online through Capella University’s distance education program. Psychology graduate schools that offer training through distance education are becoming a convenient, sophisticated route to a Master of Science in Educational Psychology while maintaining responsibilities such as work and family.

Job Outlook for Educational Psychologists

The profession of psychology as a whole is expected to grow between 18 – 26% through the year 2014 with one in four psychologists working in an educational setting. These predictions from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shed a promising light on a career in educational psychology. Students who are seriously considering entering the profession should be able to perform detailed work individually and in group settings. Students also must develop patience and perseverance for the amount of hard work and time required to harvest practical information from meticulous, academic studies.

Online colleges show in their academic program designs that they are very much aware of the evolving health care marketplace. As managed health care has evolved, large bureaucracies have appeared in the form of HMOs and large health care provider groups which require people with business management skills. There is also general recognition of the changing requirements in the marketplace.

Management positions where a bachelor’s degree in health care once sufficed now require a master’s in health care. In similar fashion, mid- management positions such as medical office management are often filled by people with bachelor’s degrees when an associate’s degree in health care fit the bill not long ago. Online schools stay on top of these trends and many of them have counseling services that can help you define what the educational needs are for the job you are seeking.

Because of the changing job market, there are a large number of professionals in the health care industry who are going back to school. These are individuals who wish to move up the management ladder and need the degree to carry along with them. Most of these people have some college education behind them. It is in the online colleges that this sort of mid-career adjustment is accomplished most easily because the schools are geared for it.

The goal of the online college is to get you positioned where you want to be in the job market or the professional ranks as efficiently and quickly as possible. A master’s degree obtained through an online college will be completed much quicker than it would on campus and can be done during the hours of your choice. Online schools are also experts in the field of transferring college credits, in order to minimize the requirements for repetition of core courses taken long ago.

The most comprehensive online master’s program in health care administration might be at University of Phoenix Online. Their degrees are designed to incorporate both business essentials and modern medical trends into their courses of study. Below are University of Phoenix Online’s master’s degrees in health care management:

Master of Business Administration/Health Care Management

Master of Health Administration

Master of Science in Nursing

Master of Science in Nursing – Nursing/Health Care Education

Master of Science in Nursing/Integrative Health Care

Master of Science in Nursing/Master of Business Administration/Health Care Management

Master of Science in Nursing/Master of Health Administration

You can see the mix of medical and administrative skills woven into some of these degree programs. Mixing medical training and management skills is going to be a vital part of future management roles in health care, according to the U.S. epartment of Labor.

Other online colleges also offer excellent curricula in health care management. Capella University has a master’s degree in health care management available online. Kennedy- Western University offers both a master’s and a doctorate in health administration. Specific areas for their master’s degree include managed care, marketing, policy analysis, quality management and advanced financial management systemic processes. In the business of managed care, a master’s in health care administration will move you into a rapidly growing job segment in a rapidly changing field.

Human Resource departments until recent years handled the hiring and firing of employees and managed benefit contracts. The role of human resources manager has grown in complexity and scope, with several worksite management roles appended to the job description. Today, human resource management includes a wide range of employee interaction and management.

The role of hiring has grown more complex with regulations about job postings and, with the advent of the internet, the potential responsibility of reviewing hundreds of resumes for a single position. HR departments in large companies now scan resumes for keywords, making that automated process the first step in vetting the applicants. Layoffs are also more complex. In the case of a firing for cause, the company’s legal department is going to demand documentation. In the case of group layoffs, beyond the internal turmoil are the issues of severance packages and benefits.

HR managers may get involved in the placement and recruitment process. A human resources manager may have to anticipate the company’s needs twelve to eighteen months out and dispatch recruiters to college campuses in search of potential employees. Department realignments and internal reorganizations can be a time- consuming and challenging task from a human resources standpoint, because morale (and productivity) demand that a substantial attempt be made at keeping as many people happy as possible.

Equal opportunity statutes place another set of regulatory standards on the hiring process. In-house regulations and practices must be in place to meet those requirements; developing the house rules will fall to the human resources manager.

There are some online educational programs that focus directly on human resources management. Capella University has an online master’s program in science human resources specialization. Some of the courses are revealing about the nature of the human resource manager’s job today. Here is a brief sampling:

Corporate

Social Responsibility and Managerial Ethics

Accounting and Finance in Organizations

Strategic Planning

Managing Diversity and Inclusion in Organizations Recruitment

Selection and Assessment

This is a fraction of the coursework, but it brings the nature of the job into focus. The University of Phoenix Online also has an MBA with a human resources management specialization. Like the Capella master’s program, one of the courses is in marketing. HR managers are being prepared to market their company through their job postings. Also found in both programs are courses in employee motivation and compensation. Compensation in this case refers not only to pay scales, but to internal rewards for hitting performance marks. The human resources manager is also the morale manager in many cases.

Warren National University also has both a bachelor’s degree in business and an MBA with human resource management emphasis. Among their course offerings are ‘corporate culture and organizational climate’, and ‘change management’. Both of those classes delve into the psychological issues that can have material impact on a business. Morale has a direct effect on productivity, which in turn impacts annual profits. The fact that these online educational programs dig so deeply into the intangible issues in human resources management speaks to the thoroughness and quality of their academic offerings.

Accounting is an expertise in the business world that does not enjoy sufficient respect, with the possible exception of tax time and when the business goes up for sale. Accounting is, however, an important area of study for the business student; many schools provide business majors with specialization in accounting. The Dickensian image of the accountant perched on his stool with a green eye shade has lingered far too long. Accounting managers are responsible for complex database management, employee costs and, to an increasing extent, fiscal strategy within business management.

Online business schools provide a number of degrees that include accounting within the context of different professional orientations. Jones International University has a bachelor’s degree in business administration available with specialization in accounting. They recommend that the student check with his or her state of residence to determine the requirements for CPA status.

Jones International University also offers an MBA degree with specialization in accounting. At the master’s level, an incoming employee with expertise in accounting may be thrown into any number of roles. As a member of the management team, the MBA in accounting may be involved in budget analysis, financial and investment planning, and perhaps advising on legal decisions that involve fiscal matters.

University of Phoenix Online has a bachelor’s degree in business with an accounting specialty, along with an MBA program with a similar focus. Their bachelor’s program includes careful focus on technology for the accountant, including the use of networking functions for the accumulation of financial data. This accounting major also has courses in organizational behavior, economic, statistics, and finance – in short, all of the skill sets required to make strategic business decisions based on “the numbers.”

The University of Phoenix MBA in accounting includes coursework in advanced accounting information systems, advanced cost accounting, advanced business taxation, accounting theory, and auditing. A Phoenix MBA graduate in accounting will also be trained in making financial presentations, typically the role of a chief financial officer or VP in finance. The online MBA programs in accounting train their graduates for high level management roles.

Capella University also has both a bachelor’s in business and an MBA program with specialization in accounting. One of the courses in Capella’s bachelor’s program focuses on e-business. Web based retail is one of the hottest business segments in our economy, and the back-office functions for both payment and accounting are different than for a standard consumer-oriented business. Online degrees tend to be pragmatic in their approach with the primary goal of getting the student successfully into the job market. Capella University’s e-business class is an example of including contemporary market trends with the classics of accounting.

Capella’s MBA program in accounting includes the standard advanced accounting courses, but also courses in economics and finance, leadership skills and ‘accounting for decision making’. This last course is another example of preparing the student for management presentations and participation in strategic fiscal decisions. Many online colleges also have associate’s degrees in business available that specialize in accounting, providing the student with a lower entry level – and the opportunity to continue studies at a later time while still working.

The C computer programming language is one of the earliest languages to emerge and was the prevalent language in programming for years. It was developed at Bell Labs in the early 1970s as a programming tool for the UNIX platform. Later it expanded into wide uses on many different systems including DOS, the precursor to Windows. It is no longer the language of choice for most new developments, it is still found in many older software programs and its design has been borrowed for many subsequent languages. Later versions of C evolved, including ANSI – which stands for American National Standards Institute. It was one of the initial efforts at standardizing computer language to create one base version that could provide basic functions on all operating systems.

C is the predecessor to C++, which is a predominant language for many of today’s current software products. While C++ is a derivative of C, its basic design is fundamentally different. C programming takes a task and breaks it into a series of subtasks. C++ is object-oriented programming, a concept that utilizes abstractions of physical objects that are assigned characteristics and functional behavior in order to construct programming behavior. A little like working with building blocks, rather than strings of computations. C++ is widely used today: a quick look through job postings for computer or software engineers almost always requests experience in C++.

To some degree, C has been bypassed by its object-oriented successor, C++. Computer professionals will debate anything including whether or not it is necessary to learn C in order to move on to C++. Assuming that you are interested in learning the art and science of programming, it is probably good to know something about its history as well. Moreover, C is not just confined to the history bin. Its design is mimicked by many software programs and it is also the basis for portions of some of today’s operating systems. The theory and design for C is probably a valuable underpinning for the computer programming student.

You can find online tutorials for C programming that present the course in narrative form. A better choice might be an online school or technical academy that offers courses in C and other basic programming languages. Online colleges provide course materials and in most cases, a surprising amount of communications capability with the institutions’ faculty. If you’ve got questions, there are answers out there for you.

Everest College has an online course in computer information systems. One of the components is programming theory and will undoubtedly incorporate some information on C. The database component of this program will illustrate an application built around C or one of its derivatives.

Capella University has a bachelor’s program in information technology that includes core courses in the fundamentals of software development. As the curriculum moves along, there are courses in database design and management, and object-oriented programming. In all of these courses, you will encounter C programming uses and C++ as well. It is difficult to find a course specifically dedicated to C because it has become a legacy program in the eyes of many. C programming retains its value for today’s programming student as a historical perspective and an early model for many of the current programming tools.

If you’re contemplating a career in the computer industry and you’ve always been clever with software, perhaps you’re considering computer programming. It always helps to make sure everyone is in agreement on terminology and in this area; there can be a little confusion.

Computer programs are conceived by software engineers and by computer systems analysts. These are the professionals that sketch the big picture: it is the job of the computer programmer to actually draw the picture. A computer programmer writes the code, the computer language that creates the program and makes it do what the analyst and the engineer intended it to do.

Computer programmers execute program instructions in one of several program languages: a sampling of language names includes COBOL, Java and C++. Their use depends often on the type of software. COBOL is used in many business applications; XML is a tool that has gained popularity among web programmers; Fortran is found in science and engineering. C++ is popular with both business and scientific applications.

Programmers can become familiar with more than one language, as there are similarities among them. Often a programmer develops expertise in a certain area and becomes known, perhaps, as a database or a web programmer. There are even programs to assist programmers today, CASE or “computer assisted engineering tools” that will automate certain program functions and save the programmer the task of writing the code.

Learning how to become a professional in this business can often start with experience. Many job postings will ask first for experience: “three year’s experience working in C++” before listing educational requirements, if any. However, in order to gain experience, you’ve got to learn how to use the tools – and that means going to school.

Online colleges are an excellent resource for programming training and degrees. Kaplan University is an online institution that has six information technology (IT) associate’s degrees in such programming specialties as Java and web development. They have an IT bachelor’s degree in database studies as well as a bachelor’s in overall programming. Kaplan University also has an IT certification program in Internet and Website Development.

That gives a good idea of the academic options available online. Ranging from a certification program that might take months to complete, to a bachelor’s degree that will provide a full college education over two to three years, there are quite a few options for those who want to major in programming or some element of it.

Capella University is another online institution with a number of options for computer programming degrees. They have an IT master’s program in system design and programming that is designed to educate not only the beginner but working professionals who are seeking to upgrade their professional status. In their discussion of their master’s program, Capella’s presentation says “you may be closer than you think.” That is in reference to credits from previous college experience that may streamline your pursuit of this degree considerably.

Included in the curriculum for Capella’s master’s in system design and programming are such courses as advanced programming strategies; object oriented design and development; database analysis and design; introduction to XML and web services; and programming strategies in a Microsoft environment.

Here is a degree that provides the strategic, design and the programming tools for a career in computer programming. If that is your goal, you can find the resources online.

One of the indications that a profession has come of age is when academic pundits start arguing about what defines that profession. Computer science is a premier example of that phenomenon. Some people feel that computer science is a catchall phrase that embodies information technology (IT), software engineering, computer engineering and the microelectronics that make computers light up and hard drives spin.

Purists maintain that computer science is only the theory behind computation: the algorithms, the flow of data through the chips and into the applications. It’s a debate for a coffeehouse or a cocktail party. For people who are interested in entering the field, computer science is the study of computers and their component parts. While you can find college majors in computer science, the course load will include software design, database functions and programming. So, for purposes of this article, we will look at the master’s programs in a variety of computer related professions.

Online colleges provide the best framework for focusing on computer science. Their master’s programs include computer science as a major, along with information technology and business-oriented, integrated courses of study. Online study takes a pragmatic approach to giving the student the skills to enter the profession. Online master’s degrees are designed to give the student leadership skills for a highly placed position in his industry of choice. Many online master’s programs in computer science are for working businessmen and women who are seeking to climb the professional ladder.

University of Phoenix Online has an interesting combination of master’s programs in computer science. They have a master’s in information systems; a master’s in information systems management; and an intriguing combination of an MBA with specialization in technology management. Technology management means handling networks and that’s going to incorporate a lot of computer science.

Capella University has four online master’s programs in information technology with specializations that spell out clear career tracks:

Information Technology

General Information Security

Network Architecture and Design

Project Management and Leadership

System Design and Programming

Kennedy- Western University has an online master’s degree in computer science available. To provide an idea of what computer science means at this college, here are the core courses:

Programming Languages

Computer Science Theory

Systems Architecture

Operating Systems I

Relational Databases

Analysis of Algorithms

Object-Oriented Design

Compiler Design

Software Engineering

Artificial Intelligence

Data Communications Expert

Systems Development

Human Computer Interface Design

It’s evident that software and data are an important part of the master’s degree in computer science at Kennedy-Western. Also required is a thesis prep course and the thesis itself, which will mean lots of interaction with the faculty, via email and phone.

Boston University has a master’s in computer information systems that is taught online. The two areas of specialization are database and knowledge management, and information systems security. Information systems and information technology seem to be the terms that have supplanted computer science in a number of academic institutions. If your interests lie in the physical components of computers, you can often find a master’s program in electrical engineering with computer emphasis. But for many of the online institutions, the masters’ programs in technology are focused on what businesses can accomplish with computers because that is where the leadership needs are.

There are several well established and accredited online colleges that offer master’s degrees in computer science. Much like an MBA, the master’s in computer science (or one of its related fields) tickets the graduate for a leadership role, and the master’s programs that you will find online reflect that.

A bachelor’s degree in computer science – or in any other major – provides the liberal arts underpinning that is an essential part of higher education. It is at this level that you will find the course requirements in English composition and literature, in history in the sciences and in the arts.

Undergraduate programs usually include some sort of mathematics requirement, usually finessed by non-science oriented students with a statistics class. In computer science you will probably need polished mathematical skills at the leadership level as well as the operational. It would be wise to look at the mathematics employed in some of the courses for a master’s in computer science while you are still pursuing your bachelor’s, so that you will be prepared. If you are coming to a master’s program some years after completing your bachelor’s in information technology, a refresher course or two in math may be in order.

Capella University has an online program for a master’s in science (MS) in Information Technology, Network Architecture and Design Specialization. These are the core courses:

Technical Communications Master’s

Enterprise System and Application Development

Overview of Enterprise Applications

Project Management for Technology Professionals

System Development Theory and Practice

System Usability Analysis and Design

Enterprise Application Testing

Quality Assurance

Business Foundations

You must choose five of these specialization courses:

Network Technology

Enterprise System Security

Client Server Architecture and Design

Network Enterprise Architecture and Design

Advanced Network Technology-Routing

Advanced Network Technology-Switching

Advanced Network Technology-Remote Access

Advanced Network Technology-Troubleshooting

Ethical and Legal Considerations in Information Technology

Special Topics in Technology

The title and the curriculum of Capella’s program reflect the purpose of the degree. It provides core courses in management-level applications of computer technology, and then provides specialization options that can take the graduate in a number of directions. That is the type of pragmatism you will find in online master’s programs in computer science.

Both University of Phoenix Online and Kaplan University have MBA programs with specialization in information technology. Both are heavily business-oriented schools.

Kennedy- Western University has a master’s program in Computer Science with a fairly demanding curriculum focusing on programming and computer function:

Programming Languages

Computer Science Theory

Systems Architecture

Operating Systems I

Relational Databases

Analysis of Algorithms

Object-Oriented Design

Compiler Design

Software Engineering

Artificial Intelligence

Data Communications Expert

Systems Development

Human Computer Interface Design

The Thesis Proposal

The Thesis (9 Units)

This course of study comes complete with master’s thesis. Despite the fact that it is distance learning, many online courses provide extensive communication with the faculty that are teaching their courses. Clearly, a thesis proposal and critique is not going to be much different than an on-campus experience. Note also the number of classes in this program that will no doubt require algebra, and perhaps some calculus as well. An online master’s in computer science is the real thing, requiring real effort, and gaining the graduate real payoff.

A career in computer science can take you in a number of directions. Computer engineering is akin to electrical engineering: it deals with the machine’s hardware. Computer programming includes the fields of computer operating systems and software. In some schools, software design is a separate discipline from programming – designing software is conceptual, while programming that design means writing the code that turns the concept into reality. Computer networking is a specialty all its own. Information technology is a term that can refer to some or all of these specialties. All of these terms and professional fields, in turn, fall under the umbrella of computer science.

Getting to the master’s level in computer science requires working your way up the academic ladder, usually earning a bachelor’s degree in information technology as a platform for pursuing a master’s. In the field of computer science, many professionals in the field who entered it at a relatively low level have chosen to pursue a master’s in order to work their way up the management ladder. Master’s programs in computer science and information technology are designed to provide the necessary professional skills for this pursuit. Often, people with undergraduate degrees in other fields will enroll in a computer science master’s degree program, transferring as many credits as possible and making up the missing pieces with spot course work.

Online colleges are accustomed to continuing education and are prepared to help students achieve their goal regardless of their starting point. The online educational institutions take a pragmatic approach to their business, assuming that most of their students are working adults with ambition and initiative. For that reason, the online master’s programs in computer science are an excellent option at the master’s level because the schools understand that the academic goal is part of a professional goal. They are efficient and are completed in as short a time frame as possible.

Capella University Online has a master’s in science degree program with five choices for computer science specialization. Any one of them would be a good choice for a student interested in computer networking systems, database development and use in a business environment. Capella’s curriculum choices for a computer science master’s are:

Information Technology

General Information Security

Network Architecture and Design

Project Management and Leadership

System Design and Programming

Information Technology Management

Both University of Phoenix Online and Kaplan University have online programs for an MBA (master’s in business administration) specializing in information technology management. That academic concept is a great mix of a highly marketable degree with perhaps the most critical computer science field in the corporate world. The University of Phoenix online master’s programs in technology are:

Master of Business Administration/Technology Management

Master of Information Systems

Master of Information Systems/Management

Colorado Technical University has four master’s degree programs oriented in computer science. In this list, you can see some choices in the programming area.

Computer Engineering

Computer Science – Software Engineering

Computer Science – Computer System Security

Management – Information Technology/Project Management

Management Information Systems Support

These are only examples. Master’s degrees in computer science can take you in any number of professional directions, and they can be achieved online in less time than you might think.

As computers, computer functions (such as email) and computer networks have become a universal fact of life in the business world, the academic community has begun to evolve its teaching disciplines accordingly. Nowhere is this more evident than among the online colleges, which tend to be a little less bound by tradition and a little more job-oriented. Many people today turn to online education as an extension of their earlier college experience. Accordingly, there is less focus on the liberal arts foundation that is important to young people coming out of high school, but less so to those already in the job market.

University of Phoenix Online has a comprehensive series of bachelor’s and master’s programs centered on the IT (information technology) component of computer science. A number of those degrees are actually majors in business with specialization in information technology. These are the University of Phoenix Online technology degrees available via distance education:

Bachelor of Science in Business/e-Business

Bachelor of Science in Business/Information Systems

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology/Visual Communication

Master of Business Administration/Technology Management

Master of Information Systems

Master of Information Systems/Management

The University of Phoenix Online degrees are clearly business oriented. One of their choices is an MBA with specialization in information technology. These IT online programs are available to working professionals. It is becoming increasingly common to acquire additional education as a requirement for moving up the management ladder. In our digital society, many times promotion in business is incumbent on education in computer science.

Capella University has, as one of its online academic divisions, the School of Business and Technology. Their assumption is that students will be professionals upon returning to school, as the only online offerings in the department are information technology master’s degrees. An online Capella University Master’s of Science in Information Technology will have one of the following specializations:

Information Technology

General Information Security

Network Architecture and Design

Project Management and Leadership

System Design and Programming

People who pursue these master’s degrees are clearly people who want to specialize in the computer science field at a leadership level in a business environment. Capella has a special service on their website that will help you determine the transferable credits you have from previous college experience.

Colorado Technical University has two online master’s in business administration programs that specialize in the computer field. Those are an MBA in Technology Management and an MBA in IT/Business Transformation. This last degree sounds like a specialization in converting from a paper-driven business to an organization with an electronic infrastructure.

Kaplan University offers an online bachelor’s degree in business with a focus on e-business. They also have an MBA program that specializes in IT. The academic cross-breeding of computer science and business grows more widespread with the development of each new business function that stems from computer technology. The retail business on the internet is one example of an enormous business opportunity that, after a shaky start, has developed into a multibillion dollar business segment in the last five years. Nowadays, computer-driven business opportunities develop and mature with remarkable speed.

In its broadest definition, computer science includes a number of academic specialties. Study of a computer’s functions begins with electronics and electrical engineering. Included as a matter of necessity is the study of computer operating systems: that path will lead before too long to software and databases. At that point, computer science branches into information technology (IT); somewhere between computer science and information technology you have the world of networking. In many universities, master’s degrees in information technology are available, and also in both computer science and networking. This holds true in for online education as well. We’ll take a look at all of them.

A bachelor’s degree in computer science is considered, in some academic circles, as a starting point in the sense that it provides the base education for a lot of career choices. Boston University’s Metropolitan College has an online degree in computer science that may allow the graduate “to prepare for careers in medicine, law, education, physical and life sciences, social sciences, and the humanities.” That’s a pretty broad spectrum of choices.

Boston University’s online master’s degree in computer science is also called a master’s in computer information systems, with two areas of specialization. One is in the area of security: providing the graduate with the ability to develop “solutions to guarantee secure networks and computer systems…and the ability to identify, develop, and implement highly secure networks that support organizational goals.”

The other specialization at BU online is in database and knowledge management, which provides “the skills to integrate information technology with business problems and opportunities…and a thorough understanding of technological issues in addition to business concepts and fundamentals.”

This is an excellent illustration of the fashion in which a master’s in computer science leads the professional down an avenue of specialization. Online master’s programs are often the answer for people working in the industry that want to move higher up the ladder into management. As in most professional environments, a higher level of education means a higher degree of focus on one component of the business or another.

University of Phoenix Online has a number of master’s programs in the information technology field. One is an MBA with a specialization in information technology – an example of business acumen being married to computer science skills. Kaplan University has the same online combination. University of Phoenix’s other master’s degrees involving computer science include a master’s degree in information systems, and a master’s in information systems management. Information systems in this instance almost always mean computer networks. Again, higher educational achievement leads to more focused specialization.

Colorado Technical University has an online master’s degree in information systems security. This academic specialty is really about securing computer networks and the data that flows over them. Capella University’s online master’s program in IT offers the following networking specialties:

Information Technology General Information Security Network Architecture and Design Project Management and Leadership System Design and Programming

Master’s programs online are an efficient opportunity to gain the educational background for your next professional step. They often take less time than the programs at traditional universities, and they do not conflict with working hours. Clearly, you can find a master’s in computer science online that will take you in any direction you choose.

If you are currently working in the health care industry and feel that you need to expand your horizons, both personally and professionally, you might want to consider looking into the financial management side of health care.

Market trends are forcing hospitals to look at the managed care payments and be more proactive in sophisticated ways. Most healthcare managers are well trained in a clinical situation, but often lack the education and/or experience in business and finance.

This training is necessary for career advancement and personal growth. Most health care settings do not provide a financial management training program, and managers may feel ill at ease with the job of trying to understand complex financial data. By not being trained, a management level employee could miss an opportunity to take action that could make a significant difference to the organization’s financial success.

To become educated in financial management there are workshops available which cover topics like financial and accounting concepts specifically related to the healthcare industry; managing units costs; the impact of managed care on reimbursement levels; selecting financial performance indicators; and acquiring the necessary tools to demonstrate financial management capability.

There are publications like “Healthcare Financial Management” which is written and edited for finance professionals in hospitals and other health service organizations. This publication covers topics specific to healthcare finance, such as the following:

strategic planning accounting practices leadership development management issues information systems network development legislative and regulatory issues capital finance cost management patient financial services emerging financial trends

The articles in this publication are directed toward individuals responsible for all facets of the financial management of healthcare organizations.

There are also several options to obtain further education applicable to the healthcare financial management field. You can continue on in your present employment and get a degree online through Jones International University, where you can obtain an MBA in Healthcare Financial management.

It can all be done in the comfort of your own home, on your own time. Capella University, University of Phoenix and Colorado Technical University offer online course in healthcare management, which will give you the theory, practical application and real world case studies to let you advance in the field.

As you can see, there are several avenues available to further yourself in this important part of the health care industry. It is important to be part of the group that improves the bottom line of a hospital or health care management company, a person who is seen as innovative and on the cutting edge. Don’t wait. Be that person tomorrow!

The growth of online Criminal Justice Degree Programs indicate that career opportunities in criminal justice and public safety also continue to grow rapidly, partly attributable to the recent spread of national and international terrorism and the addition of technology in the study of crime. Criminal justice degree graduates of online programs must have a desire to be a part of a system that is designed to protect and serve the community, investigate and punish crime, assess, rehabilitate, and incarcerate offenders, and seek out terrorism. Criminal justice degree graduates of online criminal justice programs can enjoy a rewarding career of service and loyalty to one’s country. How does one go about becoming a criminal justice degree graduate?

It has never been more convenient to become a criminal justice degree graduate from an online criminal justice program with numerous colleges and universities offering distance learning programs via the Internet. These programs allow students to graduate from a Criminal Justice Degree program online according to their schedule and from the comfort of their own home. Online Criminal Justice degrees are fast becoming recognized as just as legitimate as the traditional classroom-setting degree programs. An online degree in Criminal Justice prepares graduates for careers in public and private agencies, corrections, courts, and social services. Some Criminal Degree graduates of online justice programs pursue opportunities in Law Enforcement and apprehension as Police Officers, prosecution and defense through the courts and Judiciary system, incarceration, and supervision of offenders as Probation officers. The online Criminal Justice degree programs examine the processes of criminal justice and instill the skills needed for an understanding of administrative decision-making, ethical issues, conflict-resolution, and technology in crime.

Criminal justice degree graduates in online programs focus on a variety of criminal and social issues. Focuses include Forensics, Homeland Security, Paralegal Studies, Corporate Law, Court Reporting, and Criminal Defense, among others. Prospective graduates should research the many colleges and universities offering Criminal Justice graduate programs online, as they offer varying areas of focus and different majors. Forensic students learn the process and preservation of crime scenes and the processing of physical evidence. Criminal degree graduates in online programs with a Law major are provided with the skills to prepare cases for court and are trained in analytical thinking and self-discipline. Further online studies include a comprehensive study of criminal intent and motivations, victimology, alternatives to incarceration, and computer crime. Court Reporting courses offer students reporter status on an official, freelance, and government basis. The curriculum and objectives here are just a few examples of the diverse choices criminal justice degree graduates of online justice programs pursue.

Students also have several options when considering colleges and universities that offer criminal justice degrees online. Colorado Technical University, the University of Phoenix, Capella University, and Kaplan University are among the various schools that offer a criminal justice education in an Associate’s in Criminal Justice, Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice, and Master’s in Criminal Justice.

Are you thinking of working in the Information Technology Industry? If the answer is yes, the good news is that the Information Technology industry is rapidly advancing and it’s students are highly in-demand. The ever-developing nature of technology makes the Information Technology industry a great career choice for anyone considering a new career or education, and this development shows no signs of slowing down. As technology grows, now is the time to pursue that career in the Information Technology industry that you have been putting off.

The Information Technology industry involves the processing of technical information and data and the methods involved in the storing, transmitting, security, and conversion of that data. Not all Information Technology workers are employed by Information Technology firms. The Information Technology industry offers employees the options of working on a freelance consultant basis, directly for Information Technology firms, and as full-time IT staff for companies and organizations. The Information Technology industry offers opportunities in all areas of the national and international business arenas including health care, security, banking and accounting, and management, to name a few.

The Information Technology industry has contributed greatly to the health of the United States economy. Information Technology’s share of the United States economy double between the 1970’s and the 1990’s, gaining it’s status by a demand for digital technology and knowledgeable IT workers. Within the Information Technology industry, service jobs increased from 33% in 1994, to 50% in 2000, and again to 55% in 2004. Job growth in the Information Technology industry is attributed to a combination of new companies opening for business and existing companies hiring additional workers. With the obvious growth of the Information Technology industry, it’s increasing popularity as a career choice is no surprise.

How does one go about pursuing a career in the Information Technology industry? There are several Information Technology colleges and universities that offer educational programs in the field and it’s many specialties, with many offering online degrees. The University of Phoenix offers Bachelor’s degree programs in Web Design and Multimedia, Information Systems, Information Technology and Visual Communication, Business Information Systems, Information Technology, and E- Commerce, placing an emphasis on the business administration of Information Technology so that students are fully prepared for the workforce after graduation. Students focus on analysis of business technology, software architecture, and the acquisition of technical theories. American Intercontinental University also offers a Bachelor’s degree program in Information Technology online that develops appropriate programming skills and educates students in data administration. Additionally, Warren National University also offers a fully-accredited Bachelor’s of Science program in Software Engineering that provides students with a comprehensive knowledge in the tools, techniques, and principles of software development and maintenance. Capella University offers Bachelor’s of Science degrees in General Information Technology and Graphics and Multimedia as well.
