Many workers get started in the field of criminal justice with a high school diploma or associate degree in criminal justice. However, opportunities for advancement and higher salaries more often exist for workers who have earned a criminal justice bachelor degree. Online Criminal Justice degree colleges are giving current professionals the chance to reap the career rewards of a criminal justice online bachelor degree while maintaining the demands and responsibilities of a job in the criminal justice field. Advanced study also affords students the opportunity to delve into specific topics within criminal justice, such as law enforcement.

Spotlight on Law Enforcement in Criminal Justice

One of the unique features of the criminal justice online bachelor degree is the choice between seven areas of focus within the field of criminal justice:

BSCJ: Corrections.

BSCJ: Crime Analysis.

BSCJ: Crime Scene Investigation.

BSCJ: Forensic Psychology.

BSCJ: Fraud Examination.

BSCJ: Law Enforcement.

BSCJ: Private Security.

Students deciding to study the criminal justice online law enforcement track have the opportunity to either begin or advance a career in law enforcement. Law enforcement students discover the roles and responsibilities of law enforcement personnel. They also explore recent issues and trends associated with the current practice of law enforcement. Finally, law enforcement students learn about evidence, proof, and the justice system.

Earning Power with a Bachelor Criminal Justice Degree Online

A brief look at data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the objective value of a criminal justice online bachelor degree. More education means higher earnings and lower rates of unemployment. On average, a professional who has earned a criminal justice online bachelor degree or another discipline earns $900 per week, whereas the worker with only a high school education earns just $554 per week. Going deeper into the data, that means the bachelor ’s degree holder earns 62% more than the high school graduate. Over a lifetime, this adds up to major differences in total earnings.

Students interested in learning more about law enforcement and other specialties in criminal justice education may visit College-Pages.com, the education and career resource website. Prospective students will find an extensive list of available criminal justice online bachelor degree programs as well as informative articles for making education and career decisions.

What Does it Take to go to Law School?

Successful law students come with degrees from all academic disciplines, including some with a criminal justice degree. The chief concerns are to earn a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or some other discipline and to develop the seven essential skills laid out by the American Bar Association (ABA), including:

Analytic and problem solving skills

Critical reading skills

Writing skills

Oral communication and listening abilities

General research skills

Task organization and management skills

Public service and promotion of justice skills

According to the ABA, these are the necessary skills to be successful in law school applications and legal studies. Students also check with particular law schools of interest to determine further application requirements for each program.

Earning a Criminal Justice Degree in Preparation for Law School

While going through a criminal justice degree online or through some other means, pre-law students should keep the seven essential skills in mind constantly, advises the ABA. Challenging classes should be selected that will develop critical reading and writing skills. An online college for a criminal justice degree offers courses in written communication in criminal justice and others that teach investigative skills. Criminal justice schools that prepare students for jobs with a criminal justice degree should offer a wide variety of challenging courses within the field.

Extracurricular activities, such as clubs, volunteer work, or jobs, can also serve to develop the essential skills. For example, volunteer work would be a possible way to demonstrate public service. Students may still further develop the seven skills in the first years of law school, says the ABA, but intensive preparation allows students to take full advantage of a legal education.

Law School and Beyond

Although it may be natural to assume that going to law school means entering a career as a lawyer, there are actually a number of even more career paths that open up after law school. According to the ABA, law school graduates sometimes go on to become:

Doctors

Writers

Business CEOs

News reporters

CPAs

Labor organizers

Engineers

Scientists

Teachers

A career with criminal justice degree credentials plus a law degree can be formed into any number of conceivable positions.

The majority of offenders in the criminal justice system are male. However, the 12% of the jail population that is female has been steadily rising over the years. Criminal justice professionals and policy makers are now attempting to combat this unfortunate trend. College graduates with a criminal justice associate degree are finding a variety of reasons to consider a career working to improve the lives of women in the criminal justice system.

Rising Rates of Female Offenders Call Criminal Justice Associate Degree Graduates to Action

The U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics has identified several alarming statistics on women in the criminal justice system. The following facts demand the attention of criminal justice associate degree graduates: 1 of every 8 adults on criminal justice parole were women in 2004. 1 of every 4 adults on criminal justice probation were women in 2004. 23. % of all criminal justice arrests were female in 2003. 86,999 criminal justice jail inmates were female in 2004. 39. % of released female criminal justice prisoners were re-convicted within 3 years, according to a 2002 study.

Criminal Justice Associate Degree Graduates can Make a Difference through Federal and Local Programs

The top risk factors that put women in the criminal justice system include substance abuse, spousal abuse, prior victimization, and mental illness. Armed with this knowledge, criminal justice associate degree graduates and other professionals have designed the following programs:

Girl Power: criminal justice associate degree graduates and other professionals deliver a national education campaign for 9 – 14-year old girls that reinforces positive values.

Girls to Women Mentoring Project: criminal justice associate degree graduates and other professionals encourage social development for girls of all ages.

STEP WON: criminal justice associate degree graduates and other professionals provide educational, vocational, and personal development for adult women offenders.

As the female offender population rises, so does the need for criminal justice associate degree professionals with a passion for working with women in the criminal justice system. With appropriate training, alumni can go on to make a significant difference in the lives of women across the nation.

The amount of child delinquents entering the juvenile justice system is increasing, says the U.S. Bureau of Justice. Recent research has focused on delinquents under the age of 13 in order to reduce future incidents. With a criminal justice associate degree online, Kaplan University alumni are becoming equipped to help in rehabilitating child offenders.

Child Offenders Call for Help from Criminal Justice Associate Degree Online Professionals

Professionals considering a career in child juvenile justice have plenty of reasons to accept the challenge. The need for criminal justice associate degree online graduates in the field is evidenced by data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics: Child delinquents are at a 2 to 3 fold greater risk of becoming chronic, serious criminal justice offenders than adolescent delinquents. 1 out of 10 juvenile criminal justice arrests involve children under the age of 13. 27,000 of the 386,000 murders in the U.S. between 1980 and 1997 involved a juvenile offender.

Criminal Justice Associate Degree Online Graduates have the Opportunity to Participate in Prevention Programs

If intervention occurs while a child’s offenses are minor and before he or she becomes a chronic offender, the chances for rehabilitation greatly increase. Kaplan criminal justice associate degree online alumni participate and help design programs that help to enhance the well-being of children and families. Sample programs that are already in place include: Michigan Early Offender Program. Minnesota Delinquents Under 10 Program. Sacramento County Community Intervention Program. Toronto Under 12 Outreach Program.

Thanks to quality training from experienced professionals, Kaplan University alumni have the opportunity to participate in the improvement of communities through the juvenile justice system. Criminal justice associate degree online graduates will continue to make a difference in the lives of children as the nation strives to keep youths out of the juvenile justice system.

Whether students are interested in directly entering the workforce or enrolling in a criminal justice undergraduate program, many students choose to begin their criminal justice online training with a criminal justice associate degree. The U.S. Department of Labor reports that employers often prefer to hire graduates of associate degree programs due to their focused training. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Education has found that students who complete an associate’s degree are more likely to finish a bachelor degree program, making them desirable applicants to university admissions departments.

Criminal Justice Jobs with Associate Degree Training

Kaplan University offers criminal justice online training at the associate level that prepares students for a variety of careers in law enforcement, corrections, and the court system. One of the unique career paths in law enforcement is the opportunity to join the Postal Inspection Service. Postal inspectors are the law enforcement arm of the postal service. They carry firearms, make arrests, and provide court testimony. Examples of crimes investigated and prevented by postal inspectors include: Mail contamination through terrorist activities. Assault of postal offices and letter carriers. Mail fraud.

Requirements to Become a Postal Inspector

The Postal Inspection Service requires that postal inspectors be U.S. citizens between 21 and 36 years old. Postal inspectors must also have a bachelor degree in criminal justice or another discipline from an accredited university. The job requires that applicants be in good physical condition and be able to read and write English clearly. Applicants may not have a felony or domestic violence record.

Students interested in working towards a position as a postal inspector can begin criminal justice online training through an associate degree in criminal justice online. Kaplan University’s Criminal Justice Associate Degree online program prepares students to streamline into the Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice program. For more information about criminal justice careers and criminal justice associate and bachelor degree programs, students may visit College-Pages.com, a leading education and career resource website.

A professional may enter the application process with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice plus three years of relevant work experience. After entering the application process, applicants are then ranked according to particular skills the FBI desires. Skills and experience that may boost an applicant’s position in the pile include law enforcement experience, military experience, and foreign language proficiency. Applicants must also pass a physical assessment and psychological examination before becoming accepted as an FBI Special Agent.

Earning a Criminal Justice Degree

Options are plentiful for students pursuing a criminal justice degree. Most universities are now offering alternative class schedules or a criminal justice degree online. Warren National University, an online college for a criminal justice degree, is one such school that has designed a program for mid-career professionals. Participation in these types of programs allows students to maintain work and family responsibilities while enrolling in a criminal justice degree from home.

Starting an FBI Career with Criminal Justice Degree Credentials

All new FBI Special Agents begin their careers with an 18 week training program at the marine base in Quantico, Virginia. Training takes place at a law enforcement training facility and includes both classroom study and hands-on training in areas such as the use of firearms. Special Agents then enter a two year probationary period and must relocate to an assigned post. Agents must transfer to wherever they are assigned, although they may specify their preferences ahead of time.

Working with the FBI after graduating with a degree in criminal justice can involve testifying in court, meeting with sources to investigate illegal activities, and making arrests. It entails issues like terrorism, organized crime, and drug-trafficking. But it also comes with health and life insurance, vacation and sick pay, and a full retirement plan. Deciding to work for the FBI requires careful consideration, but could be the most exciting, rewarding career for a professional with a criminal justice degree.

Criminal justice programs can prepare students for occupations within law enforcement, corrections, or the court system. Within the criminal justice system is the position of bailiff, sometimes described as the law enforcement arm of the court. An online criminal justice program can equip students with the needed skills to function successfully as a bailiff at the state or federal level.

What is a Bailiff?

Online criminal justice program graduates who choose to work as bailiffs provide law enforcement services for the court. Typical duties include maintaining order in the courtroom, serving legal documents, and guarding juries from outside contact when court is not in session. Enforcing evictions and seizing property are additional responsibilities sometimes carried out by bailiffs. Other job titles, for online criminal justice program graduates who provide security for courts, are marshals or court officers.

Required Education to Become a Bailiff

There is no specific educational path towards becoming a bailiff. County positions may require only a high school diploma or an associate degree in criminal justice. However, state and federal positions often require bailiffs to earn a campus or online criminal justice program degree. Schools, such as Kaplan University, offer an online criminal justice program that can be completed by working professionals. Kaplan students may choose a specialty within the field of criminal justice, such as: forensic psychology, corrections, crime analysis, or law enforcement. Bachelor of science in criminal justice education provides students with critical thinking skills and extensive training in criminology, criminal justice administration, criminal law, and other topics critical to a future career in criminal justice.

Are terrorists a potential problem in your city? What must you consider relevant when dealing with drugs, drug addicts, recidivism, etc.? Has homelessness become a major issue and divisive stumbling block for your community? Gangs a problem?

These are just some of the many questions students involved in criminal justice must address. The criminal justice field is not static, transparent, or straightforward. No, it is an interdisciplinary field that requires incredible fortitude, a vast amount of discipline, intelligence, humaneness and compassion. Knowing the issues, debating the manner in which problems are handled, and being strongly cognizant of the law are all a part of what you might expect to explore and learn as a student of criminal justice.

To be very accomplished, one must know the law backwards and forwards. You want to give yourself the edge for, certainly in a sense, it is an adversarial system to a degree. Knowing as much as you can about law, psychology, sociology, ethics, and public policy will enable you to not only become even more adept within the system but, at the same time, it will allow you also to better serve society. However simplistic it may sound, the more you know the better off you will be.

If you intend to get a master’s degree in criminal justice, you will find your personal interests will guide you in determining what aspect of criminal justice you wish to pursue primarily. Depending on the institution you pick to earn a degree, you can easily be studying subjects as far ranging as business administration, statistics, operating procedures, forensic science, homeland security, psychology, crime analysis, fundamentals of criminal law, sociology, human rights, history of the criminal justice system, ethics, justice administration, and more.

Scope out your options first. Assess a number of institutions and compare: the institutional biases (theoretical or practical); the course offerings; the roster of instructors and their specialties (have these professors had any experience in the field besides their academic training?). While keeping in mind generally what you eventually want to accomplish, try to evaluate what each institution is doing to best serve you and to keep up with current thinking and issues relevant to criminal justice (e.g., terrorism and international security). Interview local law enforcement agencies in your area: do these agencies offer internships or special training once you’re on the job? Do they maintain sufficient man power? Are they large enough to even accommodate someone who has had specialized training such as you intend to focus on? Don’t allow yourself to be overwhelmed, either. Small steps and general knowledge honed later to the specific, will give you the strongest base to accomplish your dream.

Every year, local jails process 12 million inmates, with a total of 700,000 in jail at any one time. Charged with overseeing this vast population are corrections officers. For graduates of criminal justice degree programs, working as a corrections officer can be very rewarding and exciting, but may also be both stressful and dangerous. Work may be done from a secluded, centralized area within a prison or jail, or may even involve serving on crisis response teams designed to respond to escape and other hazardous situations.

What is a Corrections Officer?

A professional with a degree in criminal justice who has chosen to work as a corrections officer supervises people awaiting trial or who have been sentenced to incarceration. Corrections officers are charged with maintaining security and preventing disturbances, injuries, and escapes. Overseeing work activities, inspecting cells, searching visitors and mail, and escorting prisoners to court and medical facilities are other functions of the job. A career, with criminal justice degree credentials, as a corrections officer, is performed unarmed in many locations with communications devices to call for help if necessary.

Required Education for Corrections Officers

Most locations require applicants to be U.S. citizens, high school graduates, and to have at least two years of steady work experience. However, a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, or a related discipline, can increase chances of promotion to related occupations or even warden. The Federal Bureau of Prisons requires its corrections officers to have at least a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related discipline or three years of pertinent work experience. Kennedy-Western, an online college for a criminal justice degrees, provides both administrative and hands-on training within the field of criminal justice. Earning a criminal justice degree online is a convenient method for many students already juggling work and family responsibilities.

Qualities Necessary for Success as a Corrections Officer

Corrections officer jobs with a criminal justice degree are obtained more easily by applicants who can think and act quickly. Applicants should also possess good judgment and be in excellent physical condition. Applicants are typically required to pass a written examination, background test, and physical fitness test.

Job Outlook for Corrections Officers

New jobs for corrections officers are expected to grow up to 8% through the year 2014. Mandatory sentencing requirements with longer sentences and less opportunity for parole will increase the demand for corrections officers. Undesirable aspects of positions, such as shift work and rural locations, are expected to continue. However, layoffs are rare for corrections officers, leading to a certain and higher level of job security.

A criminal justice career can be started with credentials that range anywhere from a high school diploma to a four-year college criminal justice degree. However, the Department of Labor reports that more education means higher earnings, lower rates of unemployment, and access to a wider range of career options. Students looking for an introduction to criminal justice can pursue on-the-job training or start with a two-year educational program. However, workers wishing to pursue leadership positions within the field more often enroll in a criminal justice bachelor degree online program that focuses on criminal justice administration.

What is Criminal Justice Administration?

The discipline of criminal justice involves the study of the government-created system that was set up to maintain social order. The three branches of the criminal justice system are law enforcement, courts, and corrections. Criminal justice administration most often refers to leadership positions within the system. Professionals who choose to enter criminal justice administration receive training in interpersonal and managerial skills, again, as mentioned earlier, often through a criminal justice bachelor degree online program.

Criminal Justice Jobs with a BS in Criminal Justice Administration

Graduates of criminal justice bachelor degree online programs are qualified to work in a variety of positions in law enforcement, criminal law, and corrections. Earning a criminal justice career degree at the bachelor’s level qualifies workers to fill state and federal positions. Other options for criminal justice bachelor degree online program graduates include working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Criminal justice administration programs typically focus on training students for leadership and supervisory positions within the field of criminal justice.

Choosing a Program from Available Criminal Justice Schools

Criminal justice degree online and campus programs typically focus on a variety of subjects, including: Criminal behavior. Criminology methods. Public policy. Specialized interpersonal communication. Ethical issues in criminal justice. Criminal justice job degree programs offer training in both hands-on and administrative aspects of the field. Training also includes a balance of study in law enforcement, corrections, and courts.

So, now, a great many students are choosing to pursue criminal justice bachelor degree online programs in criminal justice administration. For example, the University of Phoenix provides a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration that has been especially designed for working professionals; this is one of the most popular online criminal justice programs available today. Students may complete the entire program through distance education while maintaining work and family responsibilities. The criminal justice administration program at the University of Phoenix focuses on providing students with the managerial and leadership skills necessary to pursue advanced positions within the criminal justice system. For an extensive list of available programs, prospective students may visit College-Pages.com, the education and career resource website.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth in the paralegal field is expected to be 27% or more through the year 2014. The driving force behind this predicted increase is the attempt to provide more affordable and efficient availability of legal services in the coming years. Although many students enter the profession through formal paralegal training programs, a degree in criminal justice is an alternative path to joining the rapidly expanding discipline of paralegal studies.

What is a Paralegal?

Paralegal jobs with a criminal justice degree involve many of the same tasks performed by an attorney. Lawyers delegate tasks, such as researching facts and preparing documents for court, to the paralegal with a criminal justice degree. Paralegals are also able to help draft contracts, mortgages, separation agreements, and tax returns. In fact, the only activities paralegals cannot legally perform are the five activities categorized as practicing law: giving legal advice, signing legal pleadings and papers on behalf of a party, appearing in court on behalf of another, and setting and collecting fees for legal services.

Paralegals use legal terminology, and document their findings and opinions related to assigned cases to a supervising attorney. As the law becomes larger, professionals who pursue a paralegal career, with criminal justice degree credentials, typically specialize in a certain area of the law. Possible areas of concentration include labor law, intellectual property, criminal law, immigration, and real estate.

Educational Requirements to Work as a Paralegal

There are approximately 1,000 official paralegal training programs at the associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree, and master’s degree level. However, many professionals choose to use a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice to enter the field. Often employers will provide on-the-job training in legal activities for the worker with a criminal justice degree or a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline. In addition to earning a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, there are also formal certification and training programs available. Certification as a paralegal is not required for employment, but it may increase competitiveness in the job market.

Opportunities for Advancement as a Paralegal

As with many other occupations, as a paralegal gains more experience, he or she is typically given more responsibility and less supervision on the job. A paralegal career with criminal justice degree credentials may also lead to supervising other paralegals or obtaining a management position within a law firm or corporate legal department. Some paralegals also choose to go on to law school after gaining experience in the legal field. Working as a paralegal can offer insight into a professional’s interest in law, can teach legal terminology, and can provide case reading prior to even stepping foot in a law school classroom.

Earning a Degree in Criminal Justice

A host of criminal justice degree programs exist as well. Typical programs, such as the criminal justice degree online offered at Warren National University, offer education in both administrative and hands-on aspects of the field. Students working towards a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice study courses such as: administration of justice, criminal investigation, written communication in criminal justice, and the American court system.

Florida Metropolitan University Online has a Paralegal Associate’s Degree as well as a Paralegal Bachelor’s Degree for students interested in the field. Kaplan University offers an Associate of Arts and Sciences in Paralegal Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Paralegal Studies. Their Bachelor’s Degree in Paralegal Studies extends to its students such specializations as Alternative Dispute Resolution, Office Management, and Personal Injury. Kaplan also has an advanced program for their bachelor’s degree called Advanced Start in BS Paralegal Studies.

Attending an online college for a criminal justice degree can be a convenient way to maintain work and family responsibilities and gain access to programs that would otherwise be unavailable in some locations.

The occupation of paralegal encompasses a wide variety of activities and career paths. Salaries range from $34,000 with state government positions to more than $80,000 for private law-firm positions. Becoming a paralegal is just one job option for the versatile degree in criminal justice and can lead the way to a lucrative, stable career or be followed by a challenging three years of law school.

Many professionals who choose to enter law enforcement are attracted to the challenging and personally-satisfying aspects of the profession. Appealing salary and benefits packages attract still more to the field. Many agencies actually offer a pension after 25 to 30 years of service, which allows officers to enter a second career in their 40’s or 50’s. However, the attractive aspects of the profession have resulted in high competition for desirable positions. Despite the heightened competitiveness of the field, interested students can earn what it takes to get boosted to the top of the application pile. What do Police Officers do on a Daily Basis?

Police offers are law enforcement agents charged with enforcing local, state, and federal laws. They are also responsible for keeping the public peace by patrolling while on duty and looking for any deviations from legal conduct. A large part of a police officer’s duties include documenting situations in which he or she is involved and appearing in court as a witness. Police are also typically relied upon for response to emergency situations. They must be prepared to respond to any and all situations as needed.

Educational Requirements to Become a Police Officer

Standards vary by jurisdiction, but federal and state agencies usually require an applicant to have a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related discipline. In addition to earning a criminal justice degree, applicants must pass a number of written, psychological, and physical examinations. Successful applicants typically attend a 12- to 14-week training program prior to assuming an official post.

Students interested in becoming a police officer sometimes choose to earn a criminal justice degree online. Warren National University is one online college for a criminal justice degree that offers a program which prepares its graduates for a variety of jobs with a criminal justice degree. Its criminal justice degree is specifically designed for the mid-career professional and focuses on both administrative and hands-on aspects of the profession.

Qualities for Success as a Police Officer

Hiring agencies look for individuals with a degree in criminal justice who are honest, responsible, and possess good judgment. Choosing to become a police officer as a career with criminal justice credentials necessitates awareness of the fact that police work is often dangerous and stressful. Candidates must be in good physical condition to meet the frequently strenuous demands of the job.

Job Outlook for Police Officers

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects police officer job opportunities to grow between 18 and 26% through the year 2014. The availability of jobs depends on government spending and grants to local agencies. High-paying state and federal positions are expected to be quite competitive, whereas local and special police departments, as well as high crime urban locations, will be less competitive. Opportunities will be greatest for individuals who earn a degree in criminal justice or a related discipline.

Students interested in pursuing a career as a police officer or who would like to enter alternative jobs with a criminal justice degree may contact Warren National University for more information. College-Pages.com, the education and career resource, is another valuable source of information with an extensive list of available programs and education resources.
