The September, 2006 Maine unemployment rate was 4%, on par with the national average.

684,800 people are employed in Maine.

The 2004 – 2005 Maine median household income was $43,317.

As of 2003, 27% of U.S. adults had earned at least a bachelor’s degree within their cumulative education. The total number of bachelor’s degrees awarded jumped nearly 50% from 1992 to 2004. Meanwhile, the average cost of tuition has been rising faster than the rate of inflation. The most recent data show tuition alone at $21,235 per year at private universities, and $5,491 per year at public universities. Estimates fail to take into consideration the costs of room and board, books, time, and effort. Does the four year investment in a bachelor’s degree come with sufficient rewards?

Financial Rewards of a Bachelor’s Degree

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the highest-paying occupations in America demand at least a bachelor’s degree education for entrance into those industries. On average, a professional who has earned a bachelor’s degree earns $900 per week, whereas the worker with only a high school education earns only $554 per week. Going deeper into the data, that means the bachelor’s degree graduate earns 62% more than the high school graduate. Over a lifetime, this adds up to major differences in total earnings.

The Bachelor’s Degree at Work in the Job Market

In addition to higher earnings, bachelor’s degree graduates have lower unemployment rates and a wider variety of career options than workers without a college degree, according to the most recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The job market appears to be increasingly favorable towards workers with a college degree. Between 2002 and 2012, over 14 million job openings are predicted to be won by bachelor’s degree graduates or master’s degree graduates who are entering a profession for the first time.

Should Everyone Get a Bachelor’s Degree?

Although the data certainly sheds a favorable light on the prospect of earning a bachelor’s degree, there are additional factors to consider before jumping in head-first. Job prospects and earning power are also affected by the local job market, the type of bachelor’s degree earned, and the industry a worker is attempting to enter. The most lucrative and fastest-growing industries for bachelor’s degree holders are expected to be in business, computers and engineering, education, counseling, and healthcare. For some professions, an associate’s degree may be sufficient, whereas other professions may require a graduate degree to take advantage of new entry-level job openings.

How to Get Started Towards Earning a Bachelor’s Degree

For more information on job outlook by career and education level, prospective students can visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2006 – 2007. The number of subjects and avenues towards pursuing a bachelor’s degree are endless and include both campus and online bachelor’s degree programs. College-Pages.com is another valuable source of information with an extensive list of available programs and education resources.

Although a seemingly new technology, distance education has been around for over a century. Isaac Pitman first taught shorthand through correspondence as early as the 1840’s. Of course, the internet has revolutionized the way distance education is conducted and has lead to its wide spread throughout the world. A 1997-1998 government survey found that over 1. million students enrolled in distance education courses and nearly 50,000 college classes were offered through distance education in that academic year alone.

With the advent of the internet, students can now earn an associate’s degree, a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, and even a PhD completely online. A variety of methods exist for each distance learning program, but modern technology brings the conveniences of the classroom often to the student’s home PC. Professors may prerecord lectures and upload them onto the internet for later viewing by students. Most distance education programs also utilize electronic discussion boards, email, chatrooms, and telephone to offer class interaction as well as teacher-student interaction.

Research is finding that today’s distance education student is not the traditional 18-22-year old found in the campus classroom. Students enrolling in online degree programs are typically older, already working, and engaged with responsibilities such as family. These adult learners often choose an online degree program in order to maintain a 40-hour work week while pursuing a college degree or further developing their current professional skills. Online degree programs have turned into a wonderful option for adult learners who are unable to enroll in traditional higher education.

One of the most appealing advantages of distance education programs is the flexibility of completing class work anytime and anyplace. Because lectures are often prerecorded, one student can “attend class” at 6:30 AM while another tunes in at 6:30 PM. It also gives students a broad range of online degree programs from which to choose instead of being limited to the campus degree programs offered in a specific geographical location.

As with anything, distance education does have its drawbacks to consider. Keeping up with an online degree program requires a certain amount of self-discipline and internal motivation. Without a specified class schedule and a professor assigning homework in-person, it can be easy to let family and work responsibilities swallow up study needs. It also takes effort to maintain effective communication with the professor and other students by keeping up with emails and discussion boards.

Students interested in pursuing an online degree program have a large selection of universities to choose from. Approximately one-third of all postsecondary learning institutions offered distance education programs in the 1997-1998 academic year, a number that has surely grown since the survey period.

If you are of a certain age and want to be startled into understanding just how much the fields of study in secondary education have changed, here is a recommendation. Visit the Canadian web site operated by the Newfoundland provincial Department of Education and take a look at the suggested science fair projects for high schoolers, grades nine through twelve. Here are the suggested topics:

Studies of storage/retrieval techniques for computer systems Handling of data transfer between I/0 devices Data manipulation and information management techniques and procedures Applications in education using the computer as an education tool Compiler design Statistics and random number problems Simulation of nonscience areas e.g. history, life or other planets A programmable processing unit design, function and operation Developing a video game Pascal programming tools Developing a program to write a new custom program Use of computers in managing industrial processes Using computers to help people do what they want to do

This list is indicative of just how far information technology has reached into our business structures, educational structures and, at the end of the chain, our lives. This is not about rudimentary software code: one of the computer science projects is developing software that will write software. As to compiler design: how many of us know what a compiler is? Apparently, ninety-some percent of Canadian high school kids do. Data manipulation (and storage) is the sole purpose for the products of one of the world’s most successful tech companies: Oracle. They are sufficiently successful that they have gobbled up their two major American competitors in the last twelve months.

The point is that this proposed list of computer science projects for students at the high school level of education indicate a remarkable degree of sophistication among the upcoming generation of tech-oriented young people. Taking the knowledge required to handle one of these computer science projects to the next educational level will be a challenge for student and professor alike. Much of what must be known to manage one of these computer science projects is taught at entry level computer science classes in college.

That may be one reason for pursuing further computer science education online. Through online colleges, you can select specific courses to drill down into a specified area of computer science: the SQL language for database management, for instance. You can also pursue degrees in computer science and related fields and achieve them within a much quicker time frame than on a traditional campus. If the student is already working, the classes can be scheduled around work hours. If the student has previous college credits, the online colleges will work to get them transferred for accreditation.

If you peruse the job listings in the computer science field, it becomes clear that individuals with experience in specific computer languages or with computer science projects based on certain platforms are as attractive as those with degrees and no experience. Computer science is one field where it might be worthwhile to pursue the college credentials while working in the field. There are more computer science projects on the drawing boards in the tech world than there are competent people to complete them.

If it is true that everything you need to know about life you learn in kindergarten, then what could be better than taking the steps to become a kindergarten teacher, and being around that basic knowledge all day long? If that sounds good to you, you need to know how to become a kindergarten teacher.

You must be licensed to become a kindergarten teacher in a public school. You must have an accredited bachelor’s degree in education as a minimum educational standard. Each state will differ on licensing requirements. There will be various examinations and assessments for kindergarten teacher certification. Some states require a master’s level degree in education. Most undergraduate programs include education courses designed to increase knowledge in the chosen teaching subject and also have supervised teaching experience.

If you already have a bachelor’s degree, there is a wide range of programs to fill the gaps in subject, education or experience to complete the requirements necessary to become a kindergarten teacher.

In some states college students can declare an education major when first entering college. Other colleges only allow education courses in addition to a different academic major. A fifth year of college is often required to complete an education course, and field experience is part of the fifth year curriculum. In addition, certain SAT scores, ACT scores or a minimum high school grade point average may be taken to qualify for admission into education programs.

There are online teaching programs that you can complete from the comfort of your home. If you are currently employed and have to provide for your family, these courses may be the best choice for you. They are designed for busy professional people who need to complete coursework on their own schedule. University of Phoenix Online and Kaplan University are only two of the many choices you have to complete teacher certification requirements. You can request more information from these two universities and several others to find out the most convenient school for you, and what requirements there are to become a certified kindergarten teacher.

What better career could there be than being a pivotal part of a child’s life from the very beginning of the educational process? You can be the instrument in teaching the basic ABC’s of what is needed to succeed throughout life. So don’t wait – check into the becoming a kindergarten teacher today. You could be changing a child’s life tomorrow.

Did a teacher at some point inspire you in your life? Was there a teacher who told you that you should reach for the stars, and that you could accomplish any goal you wanted? If so, that is probably the best reason to look at teaching as your own career.

You have the ability to shape another person’s life by teaching and instructing them how to make a difference in their own life and in the world. It is your chance to have an impact on society and an impact on students. Certainly there can be no more lofty goal than that.

From a more practical standpoint there are several other reasons to consider the teaching profession. There is a growing shortage of teachers, and especially a need for exemplary teachers. There are personal perks involved in teaching, like the vacations and the summers off, to explore other personal paths. You might be the kind of person who has an intellectual fascination with a certain discipline, like English literature or one of the sciences. Teaching is your chance to really hone in on that interest and give it everything you have.

It is a demanding profession because you must motivate hundreds of students every day, with little prep time. You must maintain order and promote a structured learning environment, while keeping up to date with a multitude of administrative tasks. Your weekends are spent grading papers and planning lessons. The reward for all this effort is watching a class in a spirited discussion or complimenting a student who has worked very hard to achieve his or her success.

Some of the questions you might ask yourself if you are considering whether teaching is right for you are: Do you enjoy learning? Do you find joy in helping others to learn? Can you communicate ideas? Do you believe that teachers can make a difference in the lives of others? Do you enjoy solving problems? Are you a curious and giving person? And lastly, are you flexible, enthusiastic and imaginative?

One of the statistics that is interesting with regard to teaching is from the State of Texas. Texas will need more than 82,000 new teachers by the year 2008, especially in the math area. According to the Texas Workforce Commission survey, the median 2002 salary for educators was $28,383. By contrast, the median 2002 salary for all occupations in the same region was $19,998.

Selecting a career is never easy. You might try talking to several teachers to find out how they feel about the challenges and rewards in the teaching profession. You need to find out what is involved, education-wise, to get your teaching credential. But when all is said and done, if you choose teaching and make a difference in the life of just one child, it will have been the right decision. Then you’ll know that teaching was the right professional for you.

Online graduate education degrees come in all shapes and colors. It behooves the student to assess his/her own interests first; then to assess the strengths of the institutions from which one hopes to get a degree – whether it be statistical, special ed, etc.; and to look for an educational program which can best fulfill those goals. One should also check state licensing requirements (information on licensing requirements and approved teacher training institutions are available from local school systems and state departments of education).

Another consideration to keep in mind before determining which online institution to choose, of course, is the age group one wishes to teach. All public school teachers must be licensed to teach a specific age group, usually by the State Board of Education (it is not required in private schools, necessarily). Specific age groups are normally divided into preschool to early childhood grades; elementary grades; middle grades; and secondary. However, categories such as special subjects (i.e., music or reading) may determine the license category. Exceptions abound, one is quick to learn, depending on the area in which one wishes to teach, the subject matter, or the reciprocity agreements arranged between various states.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, one can be very optimistic about the opportunities for teachers. The percentage of teachers working over forty-five years of age in 2004 is slightly less than 50 percent; therefore, it is expected a large number of teachers will retire within the next ten years. Teacher shortages should grow, particularly in poor, urban schools. Also, enrollment in the next ten years is expected to rise, especially in the West. Being mobile and licensed in more than one subject will only add to one’s marketability. Be aware, too, that qualified teachers in such subjects as mathematics, science, bilingual education, and foreign languages will be especially scarce. Adequate numbers of qualified teachers in such fields as general elementary education, physical education and social studies education already exist and should be avoided. Teaching prospects will no doubt improve overall and it seems a very good time to consider the field as a sensible career choice, aside from just the fact that one might feel especially dedicated to the profession.

Interestingly, average 2004 yearly earning estimates compare favorably with other professions. The following are figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics which can be broken down by levels taught:

Kindergarten: $44,940

Elementary school: $46,350

Middle school: $47,170

Secondary school: $48,980

For whatever reason one aspires to be an educator, it seems entirely possible to attain ones goals fairly easily due to the technology we accept as commonplace and the burgeoning number of degree programs offered by online institutions. The marriage of education and technology makes perfect sense – both for your own education as well as the education you may one day offer students in your classroom.

Considering a degree in Criminal Justice? You may be asking yourself, “What can I do with a Criminal Justice Degree?” The answer depends on what you, the student, finds most challenging and rewarding on the long list of possible career options that Criminal Justice graduates enjoy. While pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice, colleges and universities offer several different career majors for students pursuing a career in Criminal Justice.

Careers in Criminal Justice have experienced considerable growth, especially since the introduction of science to the processing of crimes, and the recent growth in the threat of national and international terrorism. A Criminal Justice degree offers many focuses for the student and prepares students for careers in many arenas of Criminal Justice including Crime Scene Investigation, Paralegal Studies, and Legal Services and Court Processes, to name a few. Colleges and universities offer online programs at all levels, Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice, Master’s in Criminal Justice, and PhD in Criminal Justice, with courses covering topics specific to the students major.

A Criminal Justice degree opens career paths to Law Enforcement, prosecution and defense, incarceration and rehabilitation, assessment and supervision of criminals, social work and social services, Corporate Law and security, Homeland Security, investigations, court reporting, juvenile justice facilities, parole services, and Crime Scene Forensics. Below are listed several career options graduates of Criminal Justice degrees pursue:

Attorney Federal Bureau of Investigations Agent Border Patrol Agent Law Librarian Central Intelligence Agency Agent Legal Secretary Corrections Officer Paralegal Court Reporter Police Officer Crime Scene Technician Private Investigator Criminal Investigator Probation and Parole Officer Customs Agent Secret Service Agent Detective Sheriff Drug Enforcement Agent United States Marshall

The specialty careers of Criminal Justice may require specific qualifications depending on the students career choice. For example, students pursuing a career in Law Enforcement or security must be physically and emotionally fit for the sometimes physically and emotionally grueling work of policing, with some employers requiring students seeking a career in Law Enforcement to attend Police Academy. Those pursuing a career in Crime Scene Investigations must possess the ability to stay emotionally stable during crisis since the processing of crime scenes can be disturbing and graphic.

Certain careers in the Criminal Justice field require that candidates meet specific educational requirements. Some Criminal Justice careers require education on the certification level only, while other require Bachelor’s, Master’s, and even Doctorate degrees. The University of Phoenix offers a Bachelor’s of Science degree program that prepares students for careers in policing, criminal law, and corrections, including management skills. Additionally, Colorado Technical University offers online programs in Criminal Justice with majors in Crime Scene Investigation and Legal Studies and Court Processes. Students at Colorado Technical University learn how to process and preserve crime scene evidence, and prepare criminal cases for court. With so many colleges and universities answering in so many ways the question, “What can I do with a Criminal Justice Degree?”, the possibilities are endless.

Students who chose to pursue a Criminal Justice degree by mail must have a desire to be a part of a system that is designed to protect and serve the community, investigate and punish crime, assess, rehabilitate, and incarcerate offenders, and seek out terrorism. A Criminal Justice degree by mail can lead to a rewarding career of service and loyalty to one’s country. How does one go about pursuing a Criminal Justice by mail?

It has never been more convenient to pursue an education in Criminal Justice with numerous colleges and universities offering distance learning programs via mail. These programs allow students to complete a Criminal Justice Degree program according to their schedule and from the comfort of their own home. Criminal Justice degrees by mail are fast becoming recognized as just as legitimate as the traditional classroom-setting degree programs. A Criminal Justice by mail prepares students for careers in public and private agencies, corrections, courts, and social services. Some examples include opportunities in Law Enforcement and apprehension as Police Officers, prosecution and defense through the courts and Judiciary system, incarceration, and supervision of offenders as Probation officers. The Criminal Justice degree programs by mail examine the processes of criminal justice and instill the skills needed for an understanding of administrative decision-making, ethical issues, conflict-resolution, and technology in crime.

Degree programs offered in Criminal Justice by mail focus on a variety of criminal and social issues. Focuses include Forensics, Homeland Security, Paralegal Studies, Corporate Law, Court Reporting, and Criminal Defense, among others. Students should research the many colleges and universities offering degree programs by mail in Criminal Justice, as they offer varying areas of focus and different majors. Forensic students learn the process and preservation of crime scenes and the processing of physical evidence. Law students in the Criminal Justice degree program by mail are provided with the skills to prepare cases for court and are trained in analytical thinking and self-discipline. Further studies include a comprehensive study of criminal intent and motivations, victimology, alternatives to incarceration, and computer crime. Court Reporting courses offer students reporter status on an official, freelance, and government basis. The curriculum and objectives here are just a few examples of the diverse choices students have when pursing a Criminal Justice degree by mail. Students also have several options when considering colleges and universities that offer degree programs in Criminal Justice by mail and can find resources via the Internet, local educational institutes, and the local library.

Considering a change in your education or your career? Pursuing Information Technology in the field of Health Care could be a viable option for you. With the ever-changing and rapidly advancing nature of technology, the Information Technology field is growing quickly, with Health Care being one of the most in demand sectors. What do prospective students and employees need to become involved in the fast-paced and growing Information Technology in Health Care field? The resources for prospective students and the career options for graduates are numerous in the Information Technology sector of Health Care.

Information Technology in Health Care involves much the same concept as Information Technology in all other business arenas – that is, the technological aspects of managing and processing information and the methods involved to convert, store, protect, and transmit information. Recently, the head of Health and Human Services presented a ten-year plan to introduce a new health-care infrastructure made possible by Information Technology. Simultaneously, the Summit on Health Information Technology presented a plan to achieve a nationwide system of online electronic health records. The Committee on the Quality of Health Care in America was asked to further identify strategies for improving the quality of health care in America, and Information Technology in Health Care was at the top of the list. The Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, in turn, funded the first Information Technology in Health Care project, and has since continued, awarding more than $250 million dollars to the cause.

Information Technology in Health Care has greatly improved the effectiveness and quality of Health Care in the United States. Congress continues to award funding to the field to support several goals of the Information Technology in Health Care industries. These goals includes development and application of IT components and products that apply clinical research networks, develop private sector certification, create an Internet portal to access Medicare information, accelerate e-prescriptions, development of a homogeneous scheduling application, bring information technology tools directly to the point of health care, achieve a system of 24hour online medical consultants, and interconnect clinicians to provide access to medical records. Since the introduction of Information Technology in Health Care, projects have reduced medical error, improved patient safety, and enhanced the overall accuracy and effectiveness of Health Care in America. How does one become involved in such a fast-improving industry?

Individuals wishing to pursue an education in the Information Technology sector of health care may wish to consider the following colleges and universities. The University of Phoenix, Capella University, Kennedy-Western University, American Intercontinental University (AIU), and the Colorado Technical University all offer programs at the certification, Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and even Doctorate levels in the Information Technology field. These colleges and universities all offer online studies that students can complete from the comfort of their own home and according to their schedule. If you have been considering a career in the Information Technology in Health Care industry, now is the time!

Shopping for a health care plan can be quite intimidating since the choices endless and every coverage is different. How does one make sense of the myriad of choices facing them when searching for a health care plan? For many people in the United States, a health care plan is chosen for them by their employer. In this case, individuals covered by their employer’s health care plan still need to understand the coverage and the protection it provides.

Health care plans have changed in the United States over the past fifty years. It used to be that most American’s were covered by indemnity insurance which allowed patients to seek out treatment by any medical provider, with the insurance company being billed for part of the cost. Now health care plans offer Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), and point-of-service plans (POS). It is important to be informed of the differences between these health care plans when choosing one that is a proper fit for you since one plan may be a better fit than another. If your health care plan is administered by your employer, your employee benefits office is the place to start in finding out more about your health care plan.

Health care plans are divided into two groups: indemnity (pay per service) and managed care. Each health care plan requires a different premium, which is the amount you pay every month to be covered by the health care plan. The differences in these plans include choice of providers and expenses for services covered. Managed health care plans (HMOs, PPOs, and Poss.”) provide patients with specific doctors, hospitals, and clinics that will offer health care services at reduced costs. Meanwhile, most indemnity plans allow patients to chose their own health care provider and the indemnity insurance company then pays a percentage of the cost after being billed. The standard cost split for health care services on an indemnity health care plan is 20/80, with the health care plan paying eighty-percent of the cost. It is important to study the specific differences in certain health care plan coverage, as the indemnity and managed care providers have begun to compete for enrollment by offering similar protection.

HMOs are the oldest form of managed health care plans and its medical providers can be contracted out by the health care plan or be a direct employee. For a monthly fee, patients receive preventative care, including check-ups. Most preventative services are offered at a small co- payment fee of five to fifteen dollars. HMOs provide patients with a list of doctors to choose from as a primary care physician, with special needs being referred out. If a patient chooses to see a doctor that is not included on the HMOs coverage list, the patient will bear the total cost. PPOs closely resemble indemnity health care plans in that the patient does receive coverage if being seen by a doctor outside of the health care plan network. However, patients may have to meet the deductible and pay higher fees in this case.

This is just a start to the information available on health care plans in the United States. If you are seeking a health care plan and are in need of medical coverage, there is much more education available as to the unlimited choices you possess.

Any individual wishing to pursue elementary education degrees must first decide upon a suitable program for training. Most elementary education programs have strict state certification requirements and choosing the proper program means recognizing what the individual wants from the experience.

First off, before any teacher credentialing begins, the candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning. After that, it’s all about research. Individuals pursuing an elementary education degree online should conduct research into the area and subjects they wish to teach. Topping the list of items to research are the certification requirements in obtaining a teaching credential. As certification requirements vary by state, individuals should research the requirements for the state in which they wish to work. The reputation of a school also goes a long way in determining the quality of teaching positions a graduate will likely receive.

The resources a university will invest in teacher education programs and the content of the education curriculum are also important determinants in choosing the right program. Does the program stress the foundations of teaching? Does the curriculum provide classroom management skills, an overview of teaching methods as applied to elementary school children, and basic coursework in child psychology? A curriculum that fails to teach the foundation and necessary skills within an elementary school environment will doom the teacher to failure before teaching actually begins.

Most importantly, a good program will provide students with plenty of supervised classroom experience. The more practice a potential teacher receives in the classroom, the better the ability to handle students while on their own.

Decided on a locale to teach? The final step is to determine whether the program successfully prepares teachers to pass the state credentialing exams. Some schools gear their programs towards passing the state exams, while others have low pass rates. Look for schools with good passing rates (over 80%).

Teacher credentialing programs that rank favorably with the US News and World Report ranking of colleges are provided below.

University of Phoenix The University of Phoenix offers both a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Elementary Education and a Master of Arts Degree in Elementary Education online. The program is designed around the specific state’s certification requirements.

Do the research and make the right choices when deciding the teaching locale. Individuals will feel better knowing that they’ve selected a program that matches their anticipated teaching goals.

Online classes are becoming the norm for working adults. While online formats offer a fair degree of flexibility for those requiring it in order to meet scheduling demands, much of the content delivered still lacks the interactivity and skillful entertainment of a live teacher in a traditional classroom setting. Online instruction demands a discipline and focus that most find difficult to achieve in an independent learning environment. In short, a successful delivery of an online class that supports the learning objectives and actually teaches something worthwhile takes some skill and finesse.

Classroom teachers often fail to deliver the same level of excellence in an online class as they do in a traditional classroom. Part of this failure comes in part from the failure of the teacher to recognize that the forum of online thinking is very different from classroom thinking. Successful online instructional design requires an understanding of how adults think, learn, and retain information. Keeping topics relevant to the course in as succinct a format as possible is the key to making online learning a success.

Because of the recent popularities of this format, universities have taken the lead in developing distance education master degree programs that standardizes the teaching of online classes. These master degree programs improve the rates of online teaching by addressing the fundamental differences in between the two forums and using these differences to develop formats compatible with the mode of learning.

Capella University – School of Education Capella University offers the Masters in Instructional Design for online learning. This program emphasizes the planning, organization, design, method of delivery, and evaluations of online classes.

Maybe it’s just casual observation, but many times it seems that the small businesses that are troubled are businesses that find their accounting procedures to be drudgery or a mystery or both. Many times, financial crises in small businesses appear seemingly out of nowhere because the financial tracking system either isn’t there or isn’t functioning. Conversely, successful businesses use their accounting systems as tracking tools to anticipate problems like cash flow issues and use them also as analytical tools. A good accounting system in the hands of a businessman who knows what acceptable cost levels are is the most accurate planning device there is.

Many times, small business that are founded with the family checkbook and become rapidly successful can have a difficult transition into professional business keeping. For entrepreneurs who either want to keep the accounting in house or can’t afford to outsource it, a rapid education in business accounting is in order.

General ledgers? Depreciation? Inventory? Balance Sheets? Income Statements? TAXES? When these strange and ominous terms surface as a home venture becomes a going concern, the newly minted CEO needs to do some reading on the basics. Problems of success are nice problems to have, but problems nonetheless. One of the most comprehensive and time-efficient methods of becoming a good business accountant is pursuing an online course of study.

The primary focus of most online colleges is continuing education. That can mean starting a college education from scratch or it can mean continuing education for people brushing up on new developments in their profession. Either way, the schools primarily serve people who have entered the workforce and want to move up the ladder or who need to acquire a new skill in a big hurry – such as our entrepreneur with a booming business and no books.

Accounting can be a reliable and rewarding profession on its own. It can also lead to more advanced financial management opportunities with further education. Both can be achieved through online education.

Kaplan University offers an associate’s degree in business administration with specialization in accounting. They also have a bachelor’s degree available in accounting. Also included in their curricula are degrees in e-business, finance and just plain business. You can choose the level of your immediate needs, or you can opt for an educational improvement that will take you a few rungs up the ladder of your choice.

CDI College does not offer formal degrees in any subject, but they offer course work leading to certification in a number of areas. In each of their areas of concentration, they have certificate training in very specific categories. For accounting, a partial list of their choices includes:

Accounting and Computer Applications Accounting and Payroll Business Applications Specialist/Computerized Accounting Computerized Accounting Microcomputer Business Applications – Accounting

These are courses that can be taken in a matter of months. They can move an entry level employee from receptionist into the controller’s office, or can give a new and overwhelmed businessman the tools to get his enterprise under control. For a more comprehensive education in business accounting, University of Phoenix Online offers both a bachelor’s and an MBA in accounting. Every level of business accounting training and education can be found out on the internet.
