The profession of engineering has come a long way since the original 1325 definition of an engineer in the Oxford English Dictionary as “a constructor of military engines.” Today the profession of engineering has grown into 17 specialized disciplines and is viewed as the field with the most trusted professionals in Canada. Graduates with a general engineering degree often add PE or P.Eng. to the end of their names, signifying their position as a Professional Engineer. Commonly seen as a profession of clever, practical designers, the field of general engineering has become an attractive choice for individuals pursuing a college degree.

What is General Engineering?

A professional in general engineering uses the principles of math and science to solve technical problems. For example, a professional with a general engineering degree may be involved in the design of: Computers. Helicopters. Toys. Robots used in manufacturing. Knowledge of general engineering is also required to build viable structures like the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and used to determine the safest slope of an exit ramp from a highway.

Top Disciplines in the Field of Engineering – Engineering Options

General engineering encompasses a vast field composed of 17 sub-disciplines. Included in the specialties are: Chemical engineering. Biomedical engineering. Aerospace engineering. Civil engineering. Mechanical engineering. Electrical engineering. Environmental engineering.

Engineers may further specialize by focusing on a specific industry or type of technology.

Required Education to Become an Engineer

Most entry-level positions in general engineering require at least a bachelor’s degree in general engineering or a related discipline. All 50 states also require licensure to offer direct services to the public. Supervisory and research positions in general engineering typically require an advanced general engineering degree, such as a master of science in general engineering or a PhD in general engineering.

Warren National University for Engineering Degrees

Many schools are now offering a sophisticated online general engineering degree program. Schools, such as Warren National University, allow enrollment in an online engineering course while maintaining work and family responsibilities from home. The program is especially tailored to mid-career professionals and leads to a bachelor degree in engineering entirely online. Online degree program engineering schools are also available to earn a graduate degree in general engineering and a doctorate degree in general engineering.

Qualities for Success as an Engineer

Because general engineering degree holders typically interact with a variety of professionals, it is necessary for them to have good oral and written communication skills. They also must be able to work effectively in a group setting to successfully complete projects in the professional world. General engineering degree holders will be most successful if they are creative, inquisitive, analytical, and detail-oriented, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Job Outlook for Engineers: Environmental Engineering and Biomedical Engineering at the Top

General engineering jobs overall are expected to grow between 9 and 17% through the year 2014, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Each specialty within general engineering has a further specified outlook of its own. Some of the fastest-growing specialties are predicted to be environmental engineering and biomedical engineering. It will be important for professionals to enroll in continuing education in engineering online or through some other means in order to keep up with rapidly evolving technology and to maintain competitiveness in the job market.

A professional looking for an environmental engineering job is expected to see industry growth of 27% or more through the year 2014, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. One of the driving forces behind this rapid increase in the environmental engineering profession is the growing concern over issues such as global warming. Global warming, along with rising gas prices, lead to President Bush encouraging increased government incentives for the development of alternative fuel vehicles this past Earth Day on April 22, 2006. Environmental engineering science professionals are uniquely suited to meet this demand over the coming years.

What is Environmental Engineering?

Environmental engineering applies the disciplines of chemistry and biology towards solving environmental problems. Environmental engineering science is concerned with the quality of air, water, and land for human health. The effects of acid rain, global warming, automobile emissions, and ozone depletion on the environment is of particular concern to the professional in environmental engineering. An environmental engineering job may center on concerns such as water and air pollution control, recycling, waste disposal, and public health issues.

Environmental Engineering and Electric Vehicles

First introduced as early as 1922, electric vehicles are powered by electricity that is usually stored in a battery. The battery must be charged through some power source either onboard or through an external charger. Environmental engineering has developed vehicles that run at comparable speeds to gasoline-powered vehicles. However, electric vehicles can only travel in the range of 50 to 130 miles before needing to be recharged. Major auto companies have now cut back on production of electric vehicles to focus on other more promising technologies. Many cities, however, continue to successfully use electric-powered buses, subways, trolleys, and light-rails. This is a major success in environmental engineering science as electric vehicles have absolutely no emissions.

Environmental Engineering and Hydrogen Vehicles

The environmental engineering introduction of the hydrogen-powered vehicle has shown promising technology. Hydrogen-powered vehicles typically have a fuel cell where hydrogen is converted into water and heat, which are the only emissions. The chemical energy of the reaction is converted into electricity through the fuel cell in order to power the car. 65 hydrogen-powered vehicles were placed on the roads of California between 2000 and 2005 for testing purposes. Hydrogen vehicles continue to be in the testing phase today and remain a possible option for the future.

Required Education to Work at an Environmental Engineering Job

All 50 states require a license to practice environmental engineering. Typically, a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering is required to meet the standards for licensure. Some students are choosing to earn an environmental engineering degree online through schools such as Kennedy-Western University, which offers a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering, a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering, and even a Doctorate Degree in Environmental Engingeering. Courses consist of an introduction class, a thermodynamics course, and a variety of other relevant science and application courses.

Ongoing areas of research in environmental engineering include solar-powered, nuclear-powered, ethanol-powered, and butanol-powered vehicles. Professionals who have received an environmental engineering degree online or through some other means will continue to search for inexpensive, clean, renewable sources of energy.

According to the United Nation’s World Food Program, 25,000 people die of starvation on a daily basis in sub-Saharan Africa. 30 million people are going hungry regularly in sub-Saharan Africa and over 40% of the population has no access to safe drinking water. Although the problems in Africa are deeply rooted in political conflicts and wars, there is hope that environmental engineering science can play a part in offering solutions to a suffering continent.

What is Environmental Engineering?

Environmental engineering applies the disciplines of chemistry and biology to solving environmental problems.

Applying Environmental Engineering to Africa’s Water Crisis

As a continent, Africa has many natural lakes and rivers, but the safety of the water for human consumption is of particular concern. Water sources often cross country boundaries within Africa with no integrated system for managing water supply and sanitation procedures. For example, the country of Mali constructed a damn for the irrigation of rice, but no one knows how much water Mali can stop from flowing through the river into Niger without cutting off sufficient water supply to the people of Niger. In addition to political cooperation, use of environmental engineering science would help to create an effective water management system.

Applying Environmental Engineering to Africa’s Food Crisis

The food crisis in Africa is another problem that could be improved through the use of environmental engineering. Political leaders and the population must come up with strategies to combat environmental challenges that occur on a frequent basis. Common challenges include locust invasions of crops as well as crop losses to droughts. A professional with an environmental engineering job can analyze which crops grow best in the region and provide the most nourishment for the population. Environmental engineering is also needed to create more effective irrigation systems.

Required Education to Work in Environmental Engineering

All 50 states require a license to practice environmental engineering. Typically, a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering is required to meet the standards for licensure. Some students are choosing to earn an environmental engineering degree online through schools such as Kennedy-Western University. Courses consist of an environmental engineering introduction class, a thermodynamics course, and a variety of other relevant science and application courses.

Environmental engineering Africa firms exist mostly in South Africa. Other job opportunities for professionals interested in working with the issues facing Africa may also participate in think tanks or perform research. Prospective students may also contact Kennedy-Western University for information on a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, a master’s degree in environmental engineering, or a PhD in environmental engineering. College-Pages.com is another valuable source of information with an extensive list of available programs and education resources.

Whereas scientists historically warned about the coming dangers of global warming, it is becoming accepted fact in the scientific community that the world is now in the midst of global warming. The amount of ice that flows from the glaciers in Greenland every year has more than doubled over the past decade. The number of category 4 and 5 hurricanes, like hurricane Katrina, has nearly doubled as well over the past 30 years. Is it any wonder that jobs in environmental engineering are expected to grow much faster than average through the year 2014?

What is Environmental Engineering?
