According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more education means higher earning power and lower unemployment rates. Earning a bachelor’s degree increases average weekly earnings by 62% over settling for a high school diploma. Do earnings just keep skyrocketing the more education a student pursues?

Average Cost of a Graduate Degree

The U.S. Department of Labor reports average yearly tuition for the 2001 – 2002 academic year was $8,891 for graduate students. However, there are hidden costs to consider as well. If a professional takes time off from work to go back to graduate school full-time, missed salary, health insurance, and lost experience in the job market must also be taken into consideration. For some students, room and board must also be factored into the total bill.

Average Financial Payoffs of a Graduate Degree

The hard data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that bachelor’s degree holders earn an average of $900 per week, whereas graduate degree holders earn an average of $1064 per week. This translates into a $164 weekly difference or an $8,528 yearly difference. Over a lifetime, a professional with a bachelor’s degree working full-time will earn $2 million and a professional with a graduate degree will earn an average of $2 million. In short, a graduate degree typically results in higher earnings in most fields of study, usually to the tune of about 21% higher.

Financial Payoffs by Specific Occupation

The increase in earnings for graduate degree holders varies by occupation and, for some, can be quite dramatic. Psychologists who earn a graduate degree increase their earnings by a whopping 78% over psychologists with just a bachelor’s degree. Other careers that tend to increase in earnings with a graduate degree include:

Education

Counseling

Social work

Management analysts

Biological scientists

Market and survey researchers

In careers that require only a bachelor’s degree for entry into the job market, a graduate degree is not likely to significantly boost earnings. But in industries that value advanced education and are made up mostly of workers who have at least a bachelor’s degree, a graduate degree is likely to be a worthwhile investment.

Part-Time Graduate Study: A Possible Compromise

Earning a graduate degree does not have to mean quitting work and attending school full-time. Many students choose to pursue a graduate degree on a part-time basis while maintaining at least a part-time work schedule. This allows students to keep benefits like health insurance and 401K plans while also staying current in the work field. Many schools are now offering alternative class schedules as well as online graduate degree programs to allow mid-career professionals to maintain their current work and family responsibilities.

More information on employment and earning outlooks by career is available through the Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008 – 2009. College-Pages.com is another valuable source of information with an extensive list of available programs and education resources.

Jason Berris, a mental health counselor with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, chose to jump head-first into the job market following graduation. He describes his work at Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center as anything but dull. “Patients come in with multiple diagnoses, including alcoholism, drug addiction, and schizophrenia,” says Jason, “It makes abnormal psychology class come to life.”

Although he is now gaining invaluable experience in the field of mental health, Jason confesses that the job search was no simple task. Initially he planned on landing a position in the human resources field, but after months of applying to advertisements and getting few responses, he realized the competition he would have to face. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the human resources profession will grow faster than average, but the plethora of experienced professionals and qualified college graduates will cause competition for available positions to be at a premium.

Thanks to the tuition reimbursement program at his current position, Jason plans to begin pursuing a graduate degree in psychology next fall. He has aspirations of becoming a professor, which will eventually require him to earn a PhD in Psychology as well. He hopes that his current role as a mental health counselor will boost the quality of his applications for psychology graduate schools. “I can’t imagine working on a graduate degree in psychology with no real-world experience,” says Jason, “Now I know what it’s like to be a counselor and I see first hand the effects of conditions like schizophrenia.”

When asked what his advice is for other graduates with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, Jason emphatically responds, “Go back to school.” Of course, he also acknowledges his recommendation applies only to those who have a passion for psychology and are not afraid to see the ugly side of people. A long-term career as a psychologist nearly always requires an advanced degree. However, for those who chose to major in psychology for the professional skills it provides and not with the intention of becoming a psychologist, applying to psychology graduate schools would be a waste of time.

Graduation from any number of psychology graduate schools can qualify students to work in a variety of specialties, including school psychology, educational psychology, sport psychology, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, and general psychology. Many students are choosing to attend psychology graduate schools such as Capella University, which has a number of programs that can be completed online. Prospective students are encouraged to visit College-Pages.com for a complete list of available programs and additional resources.

There are online business administration programs for PhD studies as well as online MBA programs. Online business administration doctoral programs actually extend into two areas: the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) which focuses on the application of theory, as well as the traditional academically-oriented PhD in Business Administration.

Both University of Phoenix Online and Warren National University offer a DBA degree. Warren National University has an online doctorate course for business administration that includes concentrated focus in the following areas: Finance Information Systems Project and Systems Management

Capella University has an online business PhD program with specializations in General Business and Human Resource Management.

While not every online business administration school has a doctoral program, the ones that do seem to have been thorough in their design and development. Online doctoral business administration programs provide the same faculty guidance and dissertation review that is found on a traditional campus. The opportunities to focus on global business issues and the quantum shift in economic power on this planet are every bit as topical in the online business administration PhD programs as they are on campus.

Online MBA programs offer a wealth of specialization areas that present a premier opportunity for career advancement. If you are seeking leverage to break into the business world, an online master’s program in business administration can certainly be a valuable tool. But if you are already employed in a corporate environment and have hit the ceiling far too soon, there is an online MBA program to fits your needs.

Kaplan University provides online MBA programs that specialize in any of the following:

Entrepreneurship

Finance

Human Resources Management

Information Technology Management

Communication and Quality Marketing

Capella University has online MBA degrees with the following specialties:

General Business

Accounting

Finance

Marketing

An online graduate degree in business administration might be the ticket out of the middle of your corporate department into the director’s office.

Jones International University has an online MBA degree available and also a Master of Arts in Business Communication. This degree focuses on such areas as team-building skills; leadership and communication skills; management strategy and technique; and research and reporting techniques.

A career in computer science can take you in a number of directions. Computer engineering is akin to electrical engineering: it deals with the machine’s hardware. Computer programming includes the fields of computer operating systems and software. In some schools, software design is a separate discipline from programming – designing software is conceptual, while programming that design means writing the code that turns the concept into reality. Computer networking is a specialty all its own. Information technology is a term that can refer to some or all of these specialties. All of these terms and professional fields, in turn, fall under the umbrella of computer science.

Getting to the master’s level in computer science requires working your way up the academic ladder, usually earning a bachelor’s degree in information technology as a platform for pursuing a master’s. In the field of computer science, many professionals in the field who entered it at a relatively low level have chosen to pursue a master’s in order to work their way up the management ladder. Master’s programs in computer science and information technology are designed to provide the necessary professional skills for this pursuit. Often, people with undergraduate degrees in other fields will enroll in a computer science master’s degree program, transferring as many credits as possible and making up the missing pieces with spot course work.

Online colleges are accustomed to continuing education and are prepared to help students achieve their goal regardless of their starting point. The online educational institutions take a pragmatic approach to their business, assuming that most of their students are working adults with ambition and initiative. For that reason, the online master’s programs in computer science are an excellent option at the master’s level because the schools understand that the academic goal is part of a professional goal. They are efficient and are completed in as short a time frame as possible.

Capella University Online has a master’s in science degree program with five choices for computer science specialization. Any one of them would be a good choice for a student interested in computer networking systems, database development and use in a business environment. Capella’s curriculum choices for a computer science master’s are:

Information Technology

General Information Security

Network Architecture and Design

Project Management and Leadership

System Design and Programming

Information Technology Management

Both University of Phoenix Online and Kaplan University have online programs for an MBA (master’s in business administration) specializing in information technology management. That academic concept is a great mix of a highly marketable degree with perhaps the most critical computer science field in the corporate world. The University of Phoenix online master’s programs in technology are:

Master of Business Administration/Technology Management

Master of Information Systems

Master of Information Systems/Management

Colorado Technical University has four master’s degree programs oriented in computer science. In this list, you can see some choices in the programming area.

Computer Engineering

Computer Science – Software Engineering

Computer Science – Computer System Security

Management – Information Technology/Project Management

Management Information Systems Support

Online graduate education degrees come in all shapes and colors. It behooves the student to assess his/her own interests first; then to assess the strengths of the institutions from which one hopes to get a degree – whether it be statistical, special ed, etc.; and to look for an educational program which can best fulfill those goals. One should also check state licensing requirements (information on licensing requirements and approved teacher training institutions are available from local school systems and state departments of education).

Another consideration to keep in mind before determining which online institution to choose, of course, is the age group one wishes to teach. All public school teachers must be licensed to teach a specific age group, usually by the State Board of Education (it is not required in private schools, necessarily). Specific age groups are normally divided into preschool to early childhood grades; elementary grades; middle grades; and secondary. However, categories such as special subjects (i.e., music or reading) may determine the license category. Exceptions abound, one is quick to learn, depending on the area in which one wishes to teach, the subject matter, or the reciprocity agreements arranged between various states.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, one can be very optimistic about the opportunities for teachers. The percentage of teachers working over forty-five years of age in 2004 is slightly less than 50 percent; therefore, it is expected a large number of teachers will retire within the next ten years. Teacher shortages should grow, particularly in poor, urban schools. Also, enrollment in the next ten years is expected to rise, especially in the West. Being mobile and licensed in more than one subject will only add to one’s marketability. Be aware, too, that qualified teachers in such subjects as mathematics, science, bilingual education, and foreign languages will be especially scarce. Adequate numbers of qualified teachers in such fields as general elementary education, physical education and social studies education already exist and should be avoided. Teaching prospects will no doubt improve overall and it seems a very good time to consider the field as a sensible career choice, aside from just the fact that one might feel especially dedicated to the profession.

Interestingly, average 2004 yearly earning estimates compare favorably with other professions. The following are figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics which can be broken down by levels taught:

Kindergarten: $44,940

Elementary school: $46,350

Middle school: $47,170

Secondary school: $48,980

For whatever reason one aspires to be an educator, it seems entirely possible to attain ones goals fairly easily due to the technology we accept as commonplace and the burgeoning number of degree programs offered by online institutions. The marriage of education and technology makes perfect sense – both for your own education as well as the education you may one day offer students in your classroom.

Business Administration Management consists of the overseeing and implementation of a company’s departments and resources to maintain success in the business arena. With its ever-advancing technology and its “survival of the fittest” nature, managing a successful business has long been lofty task. In this advanced stage of business administration, it is essential that managers possess and maintain the necessary skills and up-to-date knowledge. But what skills are required to be a valued and sought-after business administration manager? What does the education of a Business Administration Manager consist of? What role do managers play in business administration? What are the responsibilities of a Business Administration Manager?

Business Administration Management is a popular career choice because of its demand in almost every industry. Opportunities in management include – but are not limited to – Government, Banking, Retail, Health Care, Insurance/Investments, Advertising, Loan Administration, and Hospitality. The world of business administration offers students and employees several areas of specialization. The possible options range from Human Resources and Finance, to Marketing, Sales, Information Technology, and Operations.

The skills of management in business administration vary according to the individual industry and department. The Management positions of Business Administration share a common set of required skills including the ability to build and lead teams, knowledge of small business management, comprehension of policy and structure, effective coordination of activities, and an understanding of ethical issues. In addition to these skills requirements, there are additional requirements for those whose management focuses on a specific Business Administration department.

Human Resource Management exists in virtually every industry and is attractive to some because it offers the opportunity to work on a self-employed consultant basis. Human Resource Managers are responsible for the function of the employment aspect of a company including training, assessment and evaluation, recruiting, policy and procedure development, facilitation of effective employee communication and interpersonal conflict-resolution, hiring/terminating, employee grievance resolution, and pensions/benefits/wages. Because Human Resource Managers are responsible for improving employee relations and work performance, they have a direct effect on employee morale. College degrees are more preferred than required in this field.

Financial managers are more challenged in Business Administration because almost all positions require a college degree and experience, in addition to the fact that they are required to stay abreast of the rapidly advancing services offered by financial institutions. This rapid growth of services leads many employers to seek out management with graduate degrees. Financial management education includes credits in Income Portfolio’s, Financial Strategy, Investments, Insurance, and Mergers and Acquisitions. Most Financial Management is found in the Banking and Insurance industries with duties including risk reduction, credit intermediation, direction of bank departments, and customer service. This management option also allows the freedom of working on a consultation basis to small firms.

People with associate’s degrees in criminal justice will find that the education helps them in a number of entry or lower level positions in the field. Law enforcement officers have not traditionally been required to have college-level education in order to apply. That seems to be changing slowly. While civil service exams are still involved, police and sheriff’s deputy applicants in some departments may need an associate’s degree in criminal justice or a related field. Entry level correctional officers may encounter the same requirement, depending on the jurisdiction. A recent internet job posting for a Wisconsin correctional officer (prison guard) required an associate’s degree in criminal justice.

A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice will open the door to a variety of opportunities in the field. Another recent job posting from Virginia was for the director of an inter-agency gang task force. The job description included knowledge of regional gang activities and interdiction efforts, the ability to respond to night and weekend incidents. In addition, the applicant was charged with multi-agency coordination – not always an easy task among law enforcement organizations. At the same time, the applicant had to be capable of community outreach, grant writing and funding solicitation from legislative bodies. That’s a complex set of responsibilities: the educational requirement was a bachelor’s in criminal justice.

Positions within police departments can require criminal justice degrees. Specialized inspectors such as the “Criminalistics Supervisor,” a position recently posted by the Lakewood Colorado Police Department, require a bachelor’s. This particular position is overseeing a team of forensics technicians to assemble as complete a position as possible from a crime scene. As law enforcement becomes specialized and more technology is employed, higher levels of education become the standard.

There are a number of federal inspector’s jobs that require master’s degrees. Federal civil service rankings often have college level education requirements that can serve as substitutes for service in the next lower civil service rank. What is surprising is the number of agencies that have need for people with criminal justice educations. The Small Business Administration, The Drug Enforcement Administration, various branches of the Department of Justice have divisions that require oversight – these are a few of the listings you’ll find in federal job postings. Nearly every cabinet level department has an enforcement division, and people with graduate degrees in criminal justice will fit into many of them.

State departments of fish and game have enforcement divisions, as do environmental agencies. Graduate students in criminal justice have studied the psychology of enforcement practices in large social settings. Some of those principles are applicable for crime categories such as violations on federal wildlife preserves or illegal dumping of pollutants. White collar violations require investigations, by investigative bureaus which require oversight. It is in that sort of niche that a Master of Science/Criminal Justice Administration would fit admirably.

You don’t have to dig too deeply into the internet search engines to find a remarkable number of career choices open to people with criminal justice degrees, of any level. It’s just a matter of patience, coupled with a little perseverance.

Early on in the 1960s, when the paralegal career first developed, the position of the paralegal was sort of an upgrade from a legal secretary. A paralegal was less of an office operations focused job, and not a clear profession.

As the position took shape as the role of an “attorney’s assistant,” post-secondary educational programs were developed to form a certification process. This certification process was recognized by the American Bar Association. The Certified Legal Assistant (CLA) emerged from this process, and is directly related to what we call a paralegal today. The terms have basically the same meaning.

Many technical colleges and other schools still provide these legal assistant certification programs. Today, there are online educational institutions that offer associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in paralegal studies. Some colleges do offer a master’s level paralegal studies program, but that is rarely a requirement to begin a career as a paralegal, and it is not offered at as many schools as lower collegiate degrees in paralegal studies are.

Kaplan University provides both levels of undergraduate degrees online in paralegal studies. Some of the programs offered at Kaplan are the standard bachelor’s of science in paralegal studies, the BS in paralegal studies/alternative dispute resolution, the BS in paralegal studies/office management, and the BS in paralegal studies/personal injury.

Both degrees, associate’s and bachelor’s, require some liberal arts study and focuses paralegal subjects. These include English composition and literature, history, social sciences and a course or two in the areas of fine arts and science as well as torts, family law, legal writing, arbitration and conflict resolution, criminal law, legal research and a course on the structure and functions of the legal system.

While similar basics are covered on both collegiate degree levels, the bachelor’s program naturally covers topics in a greater depth. At a traditional college or university, an associate’s degree would take two years, and a bachelor’s would take four years. The online learning system has accelerated programs that allow students to complete the requirements for these degrees in less time. This study time is considerably shorter if you enroll online with transferable college credits that you have already completed.

Entry level positions at a law office as a legal secretary or clerk might be acquired with minimal certification. Requirements for positions with more case related responsibility like a paralegal are becoming higher. Many law firms desire applicants to posses at least an associate’s degree or, in many cases, a bachelor’s degree. With online programs, these requirements are easier than ever to meet.

Paralegals are often responsible for drafting arguments for attorneys, brief writing, interviewing potential clients, and other law office duties. This is why a four year degree in paralegal studies is desirable. If you are interested in a career like this and don’t want to spend four years on a a campus, online programs may be the path you want to take.

Our world is always progressing. The rate of technological advancement and the increase of human knowledge is increasing exponentially. Society is becoming more and more competitive as the population expands. Many people at the beginning of their careers find that a bachelor’s degree is losing its value in the employment market.

It is virtually impossible to acquire a position that is beyond entry level or low level administrative jobs if you do not have at least a bachelor’s degree. The level that individuals with four year degrees can rise to is not as high as it used to be.

Advanced degrees are becoming more common in the job market, which raises the level of competition job seekers now face. Larger companies, along with some medium sized companies are setting higher degrees as the standard requirement for any position above middle management. A higher degree in the business field will most likely be an MBA. Advanced engineering degrees get a lot of attention in the technical industry. Even in this field, an engineer might not be eligible for a management position in a research lab without a business degree.

If you are seeking an advanced degree, there are now more options to choose from as far obtaining one. Many colleges now offer evening courses, and some forty percent of colleges and universities in the United States provide distance learning options. There are a number of graduate level opportunities available through accredited online educational institutions. These programs are designed for individuals who are already working and ready to climb the professional ladder.

It used to be that college was a traditional four years after high school. Many students are beginning at community colleges to cut the cost of general education courses, and then transferring to four year colleges. The expense of post-secondary education has become so high that many students begin jobs while attending school part time.

Some people with some college credits pursue advanced degrees by first finding out what classes are required to find a way to use the college experience that they do have. Then they apply their college credits towards what they need to acquire and advanced degree.

Sometimes evening course selections are limited, but that is not to say the the classes required to complete an advanced degree program are not available. Online courses offer a great deal of flexibility, making it possible for working mothers to find the time to pursue a degree. One example of a flexible online college is the University of Phoenix Online, and there are others. Phoenix Online provides thirty-five advanced degrees. Some of the programs offered include education, health care, technology and business. Higher degrees are becoming more common, but there are many opportunities for you to keep up with the times.

Online schools provide an abundance of opportunities for aspiring healthcare professionals, including almost any administrative or non-medical healthcare career that you can think of. There are some schools that offer online Registered Nursing programs. Both the University of Phoenix Online and Kaplan University offer bachelor of science degrees to individuals who are already working as registered nurses.

There are a number of specialized skills and administrative aspects behind the healthcare industry. A majority of the skills necessary can be obtained through the provisions of online educational institutions. These colleges and universities are certified, and the degrees are authentic. Certifications, as well as bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate’s degrees can be acquired online in the various disciplines under non-medical healthcare professions.

Kaplan University offers certification programs in case management, forensic nursing, legal nurse consulting, geriatric care management, and life care planning. These programs for registered nurses who need to specialize in order to qualify for a certain position. Kaplan also provides a health care management bachelor’s degree program.

Case management has to do with health insurance. Individuals in case management are responsible for decisions related to which treatments are covered by insurance, and handing claim disputes. Case managers are also involved in the clinical testing of drugs during pre-release, in the biotech field. There is certainly a growing need for individuals to fill such positions.

Online bachelor’s and graduate degrees in health administration are available at Kennedy Western University. The University of Phoenix Online offers master’s programs in nursing and healthcare management, healthcare administration, and business administration with a specialization in healthcare administration. Healthcare management degrees are also offered at Ashworth College, who also offers public health classes.

Anyone interested in working towards a degree in healthcare administration should think about where they want to end up working specifically. Health administration is a broad label, that encompasses a number of different focuses. It will be helpful to decide on a concentration, like clinic management or public health, before embarking on the path to your degree.

College has evolved drastically over the past few decades. Studying liberal arts for four years is a thing of the past. Today’s college student is more likely to have given some thought to the purpose of his or her college education. That thought process may well conclude that an undergraduate degree has a far more limited impact in the job market today than just twenty years ago.

Accordingly, if a college student’s opportunity for study is initially limited to four years, then a bachelor’s degree in business administration may be the most valuable four-year degree within the curriculum. A bachelor’s in business administration is the ticket to an entry level or mid-level position in the traditional business structure in any number of departmental roles.

A graduate with a degree in business administration could break into a corporation in sales, in marketing, in the accounting end of the operation, in project management – it’s a degree that says the person presenting this resume is competent and sufficiently trained to function (and be trusted) in a variety of posts. There are not many bachelor’s degrees that provide that sort of cross-functional promise to an HR department.

The business administration major is learning about the several aspects of business at both a macro- and micro-level. When the student has completed the bachelor’s degree in business administration, he or she knows enough about each of those aspects to be conversant with them. The student should understand the role of each department or subdivision of a business and be equipped to take on minor roles with competence.

Many, if not most of today’s college students coming out of high school understand that an undergraduate degree has limited value above the middle management level. In the corporate world, the best foundation for nearly any sort of graduate work is a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Degrees in economics and finance are impressive, but a degree in business administration gives the graduate a multifaceted value to the potential employer.

If individuals with a bachelor degree in business administration want to raise the educational bar, they are equipped with the knowledge and background needed move on to graduate studies. These students can consider an MBA or a management degree; they can focus on other related areas such as marketing or IT or global business opportunity without too much concern for the core areas of study which have already been learned.

A bachelor’s in business administration matches up almost as well with a law degree. Attorneys in corporate firms have gotten to be acquainted more with information about business practices than with the tax laws that apply. It is also true that attorneys who seek opportunities in the public sector will find that the underpinnings of a business administration degree round out the resume nicely. A bachelor’s degree in business administration is an extremely valuable asset, whether acquired online or on campus.

The judicial functions of the accounting world are done by the internal auditors. These officers keep a track of the checks and balances to the economic world. They regularly appraise competence, legitimacy, and suitability of corporate books.

The financial advice given to special personal clients and individuals is the job of Personal financial advisors. These professionals prepare taxes and personal budgets, and also plan the client’s retirement accounts. They also assist their clients to appraise and develop investment portfolios.

A bachelor’s degree in accounting is the basic requirement for the entry-level jobs. Besides a degree the following skills are highly beneficial. They are critical thinking ability, analytical proficiency, communications dexterity, aptitude for numbers.

Other advantageous abilities are computer skills, a thorough knowledge of licensing or certification, and possessing a graduate degree in accounting. However, thanks to the Internet, obtaining a masters or graduate degree on-line is a reality. Most college graduates feel that they don’t have time to obtain a masters degree while entering the workforce and balancing a family. The benefit of an on-line masters degree is that it is flexible, more so than a degree from a traditional college or university. It allows you to study from the comfort of your own home and frees up time in your day for family and work. Getting a masters or graduate degree allows you to obtain that promotion and salary increase you deserve. Individuals with a master degree typically earn twice that of a person with a bachelors degree, and 4 times that of those with high-school diplomas.

With reasons like these, it’s no wonder why on-line master’s degree are more popular than ever!
