In the recent past there has been a shift in types of diseases affecting the U.S. population, from acute infections to chronic illnesses. Life expectancy has been steadily increasing. As a result, the percentage of the population over the age of 65 is greater than ever before. In 2000, 12% of the population was over the age of 65. By 2030, that number is expected to grow to 19% while the amount of people over the age of 80 is predicted to more than double. Consequently, nurses who have attended campus or online nursing class programs to work in long-term care are expected to experience significant employment growth in the coming decades.

What is Long-Term Care Nursing?

80% of persons aged 65 and older have at least one chronic condition while 50% have at least two. Many end up unable to care for themselves and enter long-term nursing care facilities. Professionals who have attended campus or online nursing class programs to specialize in long-term care nursing are responsible for much of the direct patient care necessary for these elderly patients. Nurses with a campus or online nursing degree may hold positions such as:

Certified Nursing Assistant (CAN)

Registered Nurse (RN)

In-Service Coordinator

Director of Nursing (DON)

Responsibilities include everything from assisting residents with activities of daily living to administering tube feedings and providing wound care. Campus and online nursing class programs now also prepare nurses to comply with government regulations in long-term care. Nurses who work in long-term care must complete assessments such as the Minimum Data Set (MDS) and prepare for state inspections on a yearly basis.

Required Education to Work as a Long-Term Care Nurse

Although registered nurses may legally practice with a hospital diploma, associate’s degree, or RN to BSN (bachelor’s degree in nursing), employers most often prefer to hire registered nurses who have earned at least a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Registered nurses with a bachelor’s degree are equipped with the communication, leadership, and critical thinking skills necessary in today’s health care environment. Taking campus or online nursing class programs towards a bachelor’s degree can also help registered nurses move into more advanced positions in nursing.

Prospective students who are interested in RN to BSN online programs may visit College-Pages.com, the education and career resource website. Students will find an extensive list of available online nursing class programs and resource articles to aide in education and career decisions.

As opposed to general administrative assistants, medical administrative assistants who work in the health care environment are expected to experience promising job growth through the year 2014. Health care administration degree graduates are often required to know a variety of specialized skills and terminology that make their services invaluable to physicians and hospital administrators. Those who earn an associate of arts in health administration degree are in an opportune position to market their skills as the health care industry continues to expand.

What does a Medical Administrative Assistant Do?

Medical administrative assistants work for physicians, medical scientists, and hospital administrators or CEO’s to help with a variety of tasks. Graduates with a health care administration degree may assist in the creation of reports, speeches, and articles. Additional duties may include helping to prepare for conferences and transcribing physicians’ dictations of medical notes. Some medical administrative assistants also take basic medical histories and admit patients to the hospital.

Required Education to Work as an Administrative Assistant in Health Care: Value of an Associate of Arts in Health Care Administration

Due to the specialized nature of health care, medical administrative assistants must be knowledgeable in medical terminology and regulatory and ethical issues that affect the health care industry. Some entry-level positions may be obtained with a high school diploma and on-the-job or online health care training. However, employers most often prefer to hire workers with an associate of arts in health care administration degree for their specialized training and critical thinking skills.

Students in the University of Phoenix Online health associate degree program receive:

Training in information technology

Training in financial management

Training in regulatory and ethical issues in the health care environment

Training in public policy

Specialized training can qualify graduates for more advanced and better paying positions. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, workers with an associate’s degree earn an average of $128 more every week compared to workers with only a high school diploma.

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps to promote mutual understanding between Americans and foreign countries. The Peace Corps currently has a presence in over 70 countries in which volunteers work with: Government, Schools, Education, Entrepreneurs, Health, HIV/AIDS, Information technology, Agriculture, The environment.

For graduates who possess a bachelor of science degree in nursing, the Peace Corps offers some exciting career opportunities.

What Does a Registered Nurse Do in the Peace Corps?

In general, graduates with a bachelor of science degree in nursing who choose to practice in the Peace Corps work to ensure the health and safety of volunteers. Nurses are involved in medical screenings of volunteers, primary care of volunteers while on assignment, and vaccination administration. Graduates with a bachelor of science degree in nursing are also involved in vaccinating children in foreign countries against problematic diseases. The range of diseases and nursing activities can vary widely depending on the country of assignment. Some registered nurses may even be called upon to serve as a Peace Corps Medical Officer (PCMO), which encompasses acting as the sole primary care provider where access to a physician is otherwise limited. Acting as a Registered Nurse for the Peace Corps is a paid position and offers a competitive salary, according to Sarah Adams, RN, CFNP, MS, an international health coordinator for the Peace Corps.

Requirements to be a Peace Corps Nurse

Educational requirements for Peace Corps nurses vary according to position. All nursing positions require a minimum of graduation from a hospital diploma, associate degree, or bachelor of science degree in nursing program along with current registration. Nurses who wish to practice as a PCMO are required to have a bachelor of science degree in nursing and preferred to have at least 5 years of health care experience. International experience boosts employment prospects with the Peace Corps as a way of demonstrating knowledge of life outside the U.S.

For more information about employment with the Peace Corps, students may visit the Peace Corps website. College-Pages.com, a leading education and career resource website, is another source of information with an extensive list of available bachelor of science degree in nursing programs and informative articles for making education and career decisions.

When considering hospice palliative care, many professionals immediately think of caring for patients who are close to death and typically suffering from cancer. Graduates of campus and online nursing schools may also imagine a hospice patient as someone who has lost all hope after being told his or her illness is terminal. But according to practicing hospice palliative care nurses, these images are mere myths and fail to encompass the entire function of hospice palliative care nursing.

What is Hospice Palliative Care?

Graduates of campus and online nursing schools who choose to specialize in hospice palliative care focus on making patients comfortable and as free of pain as possible. The goal of treatment is to relieve symptoms rather than to cure a terminal disease. In addition to providing pain medications, a hospice palliative care nurse with a campus or online nursing degree may administer a blood transfusion to lesson the patient’s suffering from dyspnea (difficulty breathing) or may even give antibiotics when pneumonia is causing uncomfortable fever and chills.

Contrary to common perceptions, hospice palliative care is for a wider range of individuals than simply terminally ill cancer patients. Alberta RN, an official publication of a group of registered nurses, maintains that hospice palliative care is for any patient at risk of, diagnosed with, or experiencing a life-threatening illness no matter what their prognosis or age. A patient may also voluntarily exit hospice palliative care and return to aggressive medical care at any point in time.

Qualities Necessary for Success as a Hospice Palliative Care Nurse

Hospice palliative care nurses may assist their patients through the stages of grief and encourage a new focus for hope that is based on feeling good on a day-to-day basis and becoming comfortable with the idea of death. According to the Department of Labor, nurses need to be caring, sympathetic, responsible, and detail-oriented. Registered nurses also need to be emotionally stable in order to deal with job stresses, such as crises, emergencies, and human suffering. Internship and on-the-job training while completing an online program RN to BSN curriculum is necessary to gain the practical work experience required to practice as a hospice palliative care nurse.

Required Education to Practice as a Hospice Palliative Care Nurse

Registered nurses may legally practice in the U.S. with a hospital diploma, associate degree, or an RN to BSN degree (bachelor of science in nursing) . However, employers more often prefer to hire nurses who have attended a campus or online nursing program that leads to a bachelor of science in nursing. Particularly for specialized nursing fields, such as hospice palliative care, attending campus or online nursing schools for an RN to BSN degree teaches communication, leadership, and critical thinking skills that are necessary in today’s health care environment.

Many schools are now offering RN to BSN online programs that have been designed specifically for working registered nurses. Online nursing schools, such as the University of Phoenix, provide academic training in the following areas:

Physical Sciences

Life Sciences

Social Sciences

Humanities

Other online nursing schools, such as South University, possess degree online RN programs that allow students to specialize in specific areas of nursing, including online nursing degree programs.

Those interested in learning more about online nursing degree options are encouraged to visit College-Pages.com, the education and career resource website.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, registered nurses who have earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing will have better job opportunities than those who have only a hospital diploma or associate’s degree. Registered nurses have the second fastest growing occupation in the nation through the year 2014 no matter what their level of education. However, specialty work and unique job opportunities, such as working abroad, are expected to come most easily to nurses who have attended an online registered nurse program at the bachelor’s level.

A Worldwide Need for Registered Nurses

The need for nursing professionals extends beyond the borders of the U.S. and into countries like England and other parts of Western Europe. The World Health Organization says that Canada, Australia, Western Europe, the Philippines, Africa, and South America are reporting severe nursing shortages.

Graduates of an online registered nurse program and other training programs make up the largest occupation within health care in the U.S. Internationally, registered nurses account for more than 50% of health care workers, and in some developing countries, nurses make up over 80% of health care professionals.

Graduates of a U.S. online registered nurse program are particularly suited to fill international shortages within the field of nursing. The educational standards set forth by the U.S. are highly regarded throughout the world and are sought out by other countries to obtain high quality nursing professionals. Consequently, registered nurses who have completed their training within the U.S., through online nursing schools or RN to BSN programs, can take advantage of wonderful international travel opportunities. Arab countries tend to provide lucrative salary incentives, while countries like England offer generous benefits packages that include up to 7 weeks of paid vacation every year.

Opening Doors with an RN to BSN Degree

Educational and registration requirements vary depending on the country in which a registered nurse plans to practice. Some countries may have their own licensing boards to which a registered nurse must apply. Countries that have no regulating organization typically want to see a registered nurse’s credentials from the U.S.

U.S. standards allow nurses to practice with a hospital diploma, associate’s degree, or bachelor’s degree in nursing. Although, specialized practice in areas such as emergency care, critical care, and specific disease conditions often require completion of an online registered nurse program or campus program at the bachelor’s level.

Attending on online registered nurse program at the bachelor’s level provides communication, leadership, and critical thinking skills that are essential to the expanding role of registered nurses within the health care system. RN to BSN online programs such as the Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Kaplan University allow registered nurses to focus on a particular specialty of interest while earning their online nursing degree. The University of Phoenix also has an online registered nurse program that has been designed especially for working registered nurses. As of 2004, there were over 600 RN to BSN programs in response to the field’s increasing emphasis on advanced education.

Finding an international opportunity as a registered nurse is certainly no simple task. Educational requirements, work visas, and language compatibility can be cumbersome to organize. However, international agencies and opportunities are plentiful and available to the registered nurse with a genuine desire to work abroad.

For more information on the profession of nursing and how to find an online registered nurse program, prospective students may visit College-Pages.com, the career and education resource website.

Forensic nursing is one of the fastest growing disciplines in the field of nursing, according to a recent report in The FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin. Bachelor of science nursing program graduates who choose to specialize in forensic nursing assist law enforcement personnel in clinical investigation of victims and medical testimony in court. With the proper training, bachelor of science nursing graduates can practice in a variety of forensic areas, including sexual assault nursing.

What is a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner?

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners with a bachelor of science nursing degree work very closely with victims of sexual assault through the majority of the criminal justice process. Bachelor of science nursing graduates who work as Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners not only provide direct care for victims, but also offer emotional support and information about victim services. Direct care duties of a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner include: Taking the health history of the victim. Analyzing existing injuries. Screening for sexually transmitted diseases. Collecting and preserving evidence. Documenting information about the crime.

Required Education to Work as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner

In order to become certified as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, nurses must be licensed as Registered Nurses within the U.S. Licensure may be obtained through completing a hospital diploma, associate degree, or bachelor of science nursing program. Nurses must also have two years of experience as Registered Nurses before applying for certification. Finally, nurses must complete an adult Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner education program and participate in supervised clinical practice until deemed competent by an appropriate clinical authority.

Nurses interested in becoming a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner have many options. Kaplan University, an online college for RN to BSN degree training, offers educational programs that lead to a Bachelor of Science Nursing diploma or a Forensic Nursing Certificate. The University of Phoenix offers a variety of nursing degrees, including: RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing. MSN – Master of Science in Nursing. MSN/ED – Master of Science in Nursing/Health Care Education. MSN/IH – Mater of Science in Nursing – Integrative Health Care. MSN – Master of Science in Nursing/MBA/Health Care Management. Nursing Health Care Education Certificate.

In the 2000 – 2002 Center for Disease Control and Prevention survey period, 12. % of diabetic patients in the U.S. reported having a history of a foot ulcer. Pressure sores are another prominent wound occurrence in elderly patients and patients with spinal cord injuries. BSN schools are now training students to care for wounds and increase the chances for healing.

BSN Schools Prepare Students to Promote Wound Healing

Wound care nursing professionals work in a variety of settings with several types of wounds. BSN School prepares students to work as wound care nurses in the following areas:

Pressure Ulcer Nursing

Surgical Wound Nursing

Ostomy Care Nursing

Diabetic Foot Ulcer & Cellulitis Nursing

Burn Wound Nursing.

Graduates are Eligible for Professional Certification as Wound Care Nurses

The American Academy of Wound Management, an inter-disciplinary certification board for wound care professionals, offers certification for Registered Nurses. As of January 1, 2007, Registered Nurses must have a bachelor of science in nursing from degree-granting institution in order to obtain certification. Requirements for certification include:

A bachelor degree in nursing

5 years of documented clinical or research experience in wound care nursing

A score of 140 out of 200 on a wound care nursing examination.

Wound care nurses are a vital component of quality health care. Graduates of BSN schools who choose to specialize in wound care can expect to find a high demand for their services in the job market. With proper training, wound care nurses can also count on making a significant difference in the lives of their patients.

As a result of nursing shortages, an aging population, and the need for health care services in remote areas, the provision of health care through telecommunications has been growing in popularity in many countries. Offering health care through information technology is also an innovative way to reduce the cost of health care services. Telehealth involves a wide variety of health care professionals, including BSN program graduates who choose to specialize in telenursing.

What is Telenursing?

BSN program graduates who work in telenursing provide nursing care through telecommunications when there is an expansive physical distance between nurse and patient. Telenursing is often used to provide home care to patients in rural or remote areas who are immobile or suffer from chronic diseases. Typical conditions monitored include: Diabetes. Heart disease. Parkinson’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease.

Care is administered with the use of technologies such as videoconferencing, the internet, and videophone.

Required Education to Work in Telenursing

Telenursing requires practicing nurses to be licensed in the state and country in which they work as well as the state and country in which the patient resides. Licensure within the U.S. is obtained through a hospital diploma, associate degree, or BSN program, along with successful completion of the NCLEX exam. Depending on the area of practice within telenursing, employers may prefer nurses to graduate from a BSN program that offers specialized training and education.

Working Registered Nurses interested in expanding their nursing knowledge and scope of practice are now able to complete BSN program options through telecommunications as well. For example, Kaplan University offers a BSN program that can be completed through a combination of distance education classes and in-person coordinated clinical practice. Prospective students interested in earning a BSN degree with the use of telecommunications may visit College-Pages.com, a leading education and career resource website with an extensive list of available BSN program schools.

Automobile accidents, falls, gunshots, spina bifida, and tumors are common factors that lead to spinal cord injuries. A spinal cord injury involves complete or partial disturbance of the spinal cord that results in a loss of sensation and mobility to part or all of the body. Victims of spinal cord injury often require long term treatment and monitoring. Specialized training in the nursing care of spinal cord injury patients is often available through a bachelor degree in nursing science.

What Does a Spinal Cord Injury Nurse Do?

Bachelor degree in nursing science graduates who choose to work with spinal cord injury patients provide direct patient care to victims of spinal cord injury from the point of onset to long-term rehabilitation and monitoring. Possible care activities include: Position rotation to prevent the development of pressure sores. Administering tube feedings. Providing bowel care. Assisting with transfers. Developing appropriate care plans.

Spinal cord injury nursing duties vary depending on the setting and level of care needed by the patient. Bachelor degree in nursing science graduates may work in hospital spinal cord injury units, trauma units, home health care, or long-term care facilities.

Required Education to Work as a Spinal Cord Injury Nurse

All nurses must be licensed as Registered Nurses within the U.S. through a hospital diploma, associate degree, or bachelor degree in nursing science. Specialized areas of nursing, such as spinal cord injury, often require focused clinical and educational training through a bachelor degree in nursing science. For example, Kaplan University bachelor degree in nursing science students are able to select a specialty within the field of nursing and also develop critical thinking skills that are essential in the health care industry. Students interested in learning more about spinal cord injury nursing may visit the American Association of Spinal Cord Injury Nurses website.

Although psychiatric-mental health nurses work within the nursing model of care, the focus of treatment is on the unique goal of developing a therapeutic relationship with the patient. Psychiatric-mental health nurses receive special training in helping patients to work through mental illness and crises. An overview of psychiatric-mental health nursing is now included in all bachelor of science nursing degree programs.

What is a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse?

Bachelor of science nursing degree graduates who choose to specialize in psychiatric-mental health nursing provide direct care to patients suffering from mental illness, such as depression, dementia, and other psychological disorders. Psychiatric-mental health nurses assist patients with self care activities, administer prescribed medications, develop appropriate care plans, and foster a therapeutic environment that encourages recovery. Work settings for bachelor of science nursing degree graduates in psychiatric-mental health nursing include hospital psychiatric units, home health care, and community mental health facilities.

Required Education to Become a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse

All nurses must be licensed as Registered Nurses within the U.S. through a hospital diploma, associate degree, or bachelor of science nursing degree. In addition, psychiatric-mental health nurses require training in psychopharmacology, family dynamics in mental health and illness, cultural and spiritual implications of nursing care, and legal factors involved in mental health care. Bachelor of science nursing degree programs, such as those offered by Kaplan University, can provide students with specialized training and critical thinking skills to increase competitiveness for desirable positions within psychiatric-mental health nursing.

The medical philosophy referred to as holistic health views the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of humans as being interconnected and vital to well-being. Although met with skepticism by many professionals, others embrace the philosophy and incorporate its principles into their health care practice. As holistic health continues to permeate the traditional practice of medicine, holistic nursing is now a viable career option for Kaplan University BSN online graduates.

What is Holistic Nursing?

According to the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA), holistic nurses approach healing with the goal of caring for the whole person rather than simply treating disease and symptoms. Holistic nurses participate in a healing partnership with patients in which they honor the subjective health experiences, health beliefs, and values of each person. Their practice is based on current nursing research and government regulations and incorporates alternative healing modalities such as acupuncture and massage. Potential places of employment in holistic nursing for Kaplan University BSN online graduates include: Healthcare facilities. Holistic health and wellness centers. Spas and health clubs. Private practice. Pain management centers. Physician offices.

Required Education to Become a Holistic Nurse

All nurses must be licensed as Registered Nurses within the U.S. through a hospital diploma, associate degree, or BSN online or campus program. For specialized areas of nursing, many employers prefer to hire nurses who have earned a BSN online or through some other means. In addition to its RN to BS in Nursing degree, Kaplan University offers students nursing certification courses with the following specializations: Case management. Geriatric care management. Life care planning. Forensic nursing. Legal nurse consulting.

Certification in holistic nursing is available through the AHNA. Graduates of BSN online programs who wish to work in holistic nursing should be dedicated to the principles of holistic philosophy and be open to ideas beyond the scope of traditional medicine.

Clinical nurse educators tend to report high levels of job satisfaction, according to Nurses for a Healthier Tomorrow, a coalition of 43 nursing and health care organizations. Nurse educators most often cite interacting with students and observing the evolution of future nursing generations as top reasons for their degree of fulfillment. By earning a bachelor of science in nursing, students can begin to pursue a career path in which nurses combine a love for teaching with superior clinical skills.

What is a Clinical Nurse Educator?

A graduate with a bachelor of science in nursing who chooses to work as a clinical nurse educator is responsible for many of the training and continuing education needs of clinical staff nurses. It is the responsibility of the clinical nurse educator to coordinate in-services that meet the needs of the staff and the standards of regulatory agencies. Clinical nurse educators also orient new nurse graduates, participate in quality improvement and assessment, and ensure regulatory compliance.

Required Education to Become a Clinical Nurse Educator: Bachelor of Science in Nursing

A bachelor of science in nursing is the first step towards pursuing a career as a clinical nurse educator. Schools, such as Kaplan University, provide bachelor of science in nursing programs with a leadership focus for working registered nurses. In addition to a bachelor of science in nursing, some clinical nurse educator positions may also require a graduate degree in nursing. The University of Phoenix offers the following online nursing programs at the graduate level: MSN – Master of Science in Nursing. MSN/ED – Master of Science in Nursing/Health Care Education. MSN/IH – Master of Science in Nursing – Integrative Health Care. MSN – Master of Science in Nursing/MBA/Health Care Management.

The occupation of clinical nurse educator is a leadership position that requires appropriate advanced training. Clinical nurse educators must develop not only communication and leadership abilities, but must also acquire advanced clinical skills in order to serve as competent guides in the clinical environment.

Whereas many nursing disciplines are shifting out into to the community, labor and delivery nurses typically work in hospitals, clinics, and birthing centers. Nurses who have earned an RN to BSN degree are able to enter the field of labor and delivery to care for women and families throughout the birthing process.

What is a Labor and Delivery Nurse?

A graduate with an RN to BSN degree who chooses to work as a labor and delivery nurse cares for women who are having pregnancy complications, are in labor, or who have recently delivered. They also provide care for newborns and, along with other health care professionals, create a plan of care for the mother and her baby. Some labor and delivery nurses may work in the nursery or with the physician during a cesarean section.

Required Education to Become a Labor and Delivery Nurse

Labor and delivery nurses must be licensed as Registered Nurses within the U.S. through a hospital diploma, associate degree, or RN to BSN degree. Many employers prefer to hire labor and delivery nurses who have earned a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) and may require two years of prior medical-surgical experience. Labor and delivery nurses must also be certified in neonatal resuscitation and fetal monitoring.

RN to BSN degree graduates who choose to work in labor and delivery nursing must possess good communication skills in order to work effectively with patients, families, and other health care professionals. They must also be able to prioritize patient needs and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Individuals suffering from Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, and various genetic disorders are often referred to as being developmentally disabled. They often require long-term monitoring and care by nursing professionals who cannot be provided independently through family and friends. BSN nursing graduates who care for patients with developmental disabilities make up the specialty of nursing called developmental disabilities nursing.

What is Developmental Disabilities Nursing?

BSN nursing graduates who choose to specialize in developmental disabilities nursing care for patients who develop a severe, life-long condition before the age of 22. Depending on the severity of the developmental disability, patients may need assistance with activities of daily living, require long-term monitoring for heart conditions, and necessitate treatment for associated physical conditions. BSN nursing graduates who care for developmental disability patients may work in long-term care facilities, schools, or home health care.

Required Education to Become a Developmental Disabilities Nurse

All nurses must be licensed as Registered Nurses within the U.S. through a hospital diploma, associate degree, or BSN nursing program. Specialized areas of nursing, such as developmental disabilities nursing, often require focused clinical and educational training through a BSN nursing program. For example, Kaplan University BSN nursing students are able to select a specialty within the field of nursing and also develop critical thinking skills that are essential in the health care industry. Students interested in learning more about developmental disabilities nursing may visit the Developmental Disabilities Nurses Association website.

Forensic nursing is currently one of the fastest growing specialties in the field of nursing. Officially recognized as a specialty by the American Nurses Association in 1995, forensic nursing links medicine and law into one focused profession. Even for nurses who are already registered or have attended a BSN nursing program (bachelor of science in nursing), obtaining the proper training to practice as a forensic nurse is simply a matter of combining a few extra classes with the proper internship experiences.

What is Forensic Nursing?

Forensic nursing assesses and cares for both victims and perpetrators of crimes. A graduate who chooses to specialize in forensic nursing must complete a BSN nursing program. Cases investigated by a forensic nurse may involve: Sexual assault. Stabbings. Drug overdoses. Gunshot wounds. BSN nursing program graduates may specialize in several areas of forensic nursing. Possible occupations in forensic nursing include: Sexual assault nurse examiner. Forensic correctional nurse. Forensic geriatric nurse. Forensic legal nurse consultant. Forensic nurse investigator. Forensic pediatric nurse. Forensic psychiatric nurse.

Required Education to Practice as a Forensic Nurse

In order to practice as a forensic nurse, workers must be licensed as a registered nurse. Registration may be legally obtained through earning a hospital diploma, associate’s degree, or bachelor degree in nursing. However, employers more often prefer to hire graduates who have attended a BSN nursing program particularly for specialized areas within the field of nursing. Earning a bachelor of science degree in nursing equips nurses with the communication, leadership, and critical thinking skills that are essential in today’s health care environment.

After attending a BSN nursing program, forensic nurses typically further focus their training by taking forensic science courses in: Photography. Wound identification. Evidence preservation and collection.

Many hospitals also offer internship programs to observe practical field work. For more information on forensic nursing, students may visit the International Association of Forensic Nurses website. Students may also visit College-Pages.com, the education and career resource website, for an extensive list of available BSN nursing schools.

According to the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing, the origin of nursing research traces back to the founder of nursing, Florence Nightengale. Her first research observation was that patients’ conditions changed when their environments changed. The science of research has since come a long way to incorporate the scientific method and achieve objective results. Nurses who earn a bachelor degree in nursing can easily start on the pathway to becoming a clinical nurse researcher.

What is a Clinical Nurse Researcher?

A graduate with a bachelor degree in nursing who chooses to specialize as a clinical nurse researcher conducts studies in the clinical environment, teaches research skills to other staff nurses, and encourages policy and practice improvements based on research data. A nurse researcher may work with physicians, pharmacists, and other health care professionals. Responsibilities of the clinical nurse researcher with a bachelor degree in nursing include collecting clinical data, analyzing the results of data, and making conclusions and recommendations based on the data.

Required Education to be a Clinical Nurse Researcher

The position of clinical nurse researcher is usually an independent role and requires a fair amount of leadership skills for involving other staff nurses in the research process. Most clinical research nurses are required to have postsecondary education, such as a bachelor degree in nursing or an RN to BSN degree.

Programs Specifically Designed for Working Registered Nurses

Schools, such as Kaplan University and University of Phoenix, are now offering accelerated BSN programs that have been specifically designed for working registered nurses. Kaplan University also provides flexibility in its RN to BSN program to allow students to choose classes in a specialty within the field of nursing. For an extensive list of available bachelor degree in nursing programs, prospective students should use the resource information available at College-Pages.com, the leading education and career resource website.

Alternative health care is a generic term that refers to a number of non-traditional, or at least non-Western, forms of medical treatment. Holistic medicine and naturopathic medicine are umbrella terms for philosophies that encompass some of these forms of treatment. A little research results in an astonishing list of alternative health treatments. By way of example, here is a partial list: acupuncture, acupressure, aromatherapy, bioenergetics, biofeedback, energy healing, herbal treatments, integrative medicine, neuromuscular treatment, polarity therapy, shiatsu, tui na, and structural integration.

Some of these are close to mainstream use today, such as acupuncture and the use of herbs for certain common afflictions. Others on that list are in the realm of radical psychology and still others are Eastern forms of treatment that remain obscure in this country. There are schools that provide an educational background on these treatment forms as well as the philosophical underpinnings that have been critical to the introduction of alternative health care in this country.

There is an assortment of massage treatments that are held to have a medical impact, and it is fair to say that some chiropractic practices fall into this category. In the alternative medicine area, there are several types of massage that are practiced and taught. You can find academies that teach massage therapy as a basis for a holistic approach to medicine. Shiatsu is one form of massage therapy brought to us from the East. There is a licensing procedure for these schools in certain states and certification provided for those who complete the course of instruction.

Other schools of natural medicine focus on herbal healing combined with additional holistic tools. There are schools of holistic nursing as well. Some schools provide courses that lead to bachelor of science degrees in alternative medicine, covering a wide gamut of alternative healing methods. You can obtain a certificate in integrative health and wellness from one institution in the midwest: this program is designed for health professionals who wish to explore the non-traditional options available in alternative health care.

Naturopathic medicine is one of those broad terms that encompass a variety of alternative health care treatment forms. Schools that offer degrees in naturopathic health care take the regimen seriously. There are doctoral programs available in this discipline that require four to five years of study.

Integrative health care is a form of alternative medicine that incorporates medical treatments from both traditional and non-traditional fields. One institute describes its program as the integration of acupuncture and Chinese herbal healing methods with “complementary and Western medicines.” One institute called The Polarity Center is dedicated to teaching methods of “energetic studies and energetic bodywork” which is integrated with other holistic practices to round out the curriculum.

The variety of alternative health care disciplines is fascinating. All of them are taught at some type of educational facility, and many of them are taught in alternative health care schools under the aegis of a single course of study, be it called naturopathic health care or holistic (sometimes wholistic) medicine or some other encompassing term. Choosing an educational path in this area may be challenging. It requires an understanding of the many forms of treatment that are available, and then selecting the combination of alternative health care methods that suit you and choosing a school that will teach them.

In 2004, the health care industry provided 13. million jobs. Registered nurses constitute the largest of all health care occupations and totaled 2. million in 2005. With the aging of the U.S. population and the expanding need for patient care, registered nurses are increasingly called upon to perform a more complex role within the health care environment. Because of their professional knowledge, some registered nurses are even moving into business positions within health care by earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing through an LPN RN online program.

Business Opportunities in the Field of Nursing

In an attempt to contain costs, hospital care is used less and less, and alternative treatment settings are used more often. Consequently, registered nurses have the opportunity to move into management positions in ambulatory care and home-based care in addition to typical acute care facilities. Registered nurses are also attending an LPN RN online program to combine business and professional knowledge in activities such as marketing, consulting, policy development, and quality assurance. An LPN RN online program can provide training to perform these business functions within managed care organizations, hospitals, and other health care businesses.

Required Education to Work in Business as a Registered Nurse

Positions beyond the title of staff nurse typically require at least a bachelor’s degree in nursing along with the appropriate work experience. Registered nurses who already possess a hospital diploma or an associate’s degree may transfer from RN to BSN through an LPN RN online program. For example, the University of Phoenix offers an online nursing program called the Bachelor of Science in Nursing that can be completed entirely online and can train registered nurses for more advanced positions. Kaplan University also has an online nursing degree that allows students to focus in areas of interest within the field of nursing. Thanks to advanced technology, more online nursing schools are able to offer an LPN RN online program at the bachelor’s level.

Qualities Necessary for Success in Business as a Registered Nurse

Advanced positions within the field of nursing require the communication, leadership, and critical thinking skills that a bachelor of science in nursing offers. Business knowledge in the area of interest is another essential tool for success. Business skills can be acquired either on the job or through advanced education opportunities. Appropriate work experience as a registered nurse within the health care industry helps professionals gain a realistic perspective of the field before moving onto advanced positions.

According to the Department of Labor, health care is one of the largest and most financially rewarding career fields for professionals who have earned a campus-based health associate degree or an online health associate degree. Employers actually prefer to hire workers with an associate health care administration degree, due to the specific, focused training graduates receive before entering the workforce. An associate health administration degree can train students to enter the health care industry as a medical records technician, one of the fastest-growing occupations through the year 2014.

What is a Medical Records Technician?

A graduate of an online health associate degree program who chooses to work as a medical records technician checks patient records for accuracy and completeness. Every time a patient has contact with a health care professional, undergoes surgery or diagnostic procedures, or reports symptoms of illness, the experience is documented in a medical record. The medical records technician reviews the information and regularly communicates with physicians and other health care professionals to obtain missing information and needed clarifications. It is the responsibility of the medical records technician to ensure all forms are completed correctly and signed by the appropriate personnel.

Required Education to Work as a Medical Records Technician

An online health associate degree in health administration or a related discipline is typically required to work as a medical records technician. Campus or online health care training in areas such as medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, legal issues in health information, and computer science are usually included in an associate health care degree. Many health college programs are now offering health care degree online programs. For example, the University of Phoenix offers an Associate of Arts in Health Administration that has been designed specifically for working professionals.

Some employers may require online health associate degree graduates to become certified as Registered Health Information Technicians. In order to sit for the examination for certification, workers must have attended a campus or online health associate degree program that has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). As of 2005, 184 associate health administration degree programs were accredited by CAHIIM.

Employment Outlook for Medical Records Technicians

Online health associate degree graduates who work as medical records technicians are expected to experience a 27% or more increase in new jobs through the year 2014. Federal legislation now mandates the use of electronic medical records. Medical records technicians will be needed to input patient data into computers and assist in the conversion from paper to electronic charting in many facilities. The skills of medical records technicians will also become invaluable as medical records are increasingly analyzed by insurance companies, courts, and health care regulating bodies.

Registered nurses are expected to have the second largest number of new jobs of all occupations through the year 2014, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Nursing professionals are increasingly relied upon to perform complex roles in health care as the American population ages and requires more patient care. In order to cope with increased responsibilities and take advantage of a broader career field, many registered nurses are choosing to attend an online program RN to BSN at an accredited online nursing school. Earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing allows registered nurses to specialize and practice in more complex environments, such as hospital emergency rooms.

Working as a Registered Nurse in Emergency Care

Graduates of online program RN to BSN schools who choose to specialize in emergency care typically work in hospital emergency departments. However, there are several options for an emergency care nurse i.e. working at an emergency outpatient clinic or working as a flight nurse, caring for patients in life flight transfers to a medical facility. An emergency care nurse treats patients with life-threatening conditions and injuries, including car accidents, heart attacks, and strokes. Graduates of online program RN to BSN schools work as part of the health care team often in cooperation with physicians, surgeons, and other health care professionals. Due to the nature of the work, emergency care nurses may work night and weekend shifts as well as overtime in order to meet patient care needs.

Required Education to Become an Emergency Care Nurse

Although registered nurses may legally practice with a hospital diploma, associate’s degree, or bachelor’s degree in nursing, employers more often prefer nurses to have a bachelor’s degree in nursing at a minimum. The number of registered nurses who had earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing as their highest level of education was a mere 22% in 1980. By the year 2000, that number grew to 32. % and continues to rise today. Attending an online program RN to BSN school for a bachelor’s degree in nursing teaches communication, leadership, and critical thinking skills that are becoming essential in today’s health care environment. Registered nurses who wish to specialize in a particular area of health care now typically need a bachelor’s degree in nursing to be competent in their field of choice.

Qualities Needed for Success as an Emergency Care Nurse

In general, nurses need to be caring, sympathetic, responsible, and detail-oriented. Emergency care nurses especially need to be emotionally stable in order to deal with job stresses, such as crises, emergencies, and human suffering. Internship and on-the-job training while completing an online program RN to BSN curriculum is necessary to gain the practical work experience required to practice as an emergency care nurse.

Thanks to advanced technology, enrolling in an online program RN to BSN school has become easier than ever before. Online nursing schools, such as the University of Phoenix and Kaplan University, have designed programs especially for working registered nurses. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Kaplan University also allows students to specialize in a preferred area of practice while working towards an online nursing degree. For more information on online program RN to BSN schools and online continuing education for nurse professionals, prospective students may visit College-Pages.com, the education and career resource website.

Although the number of new registered nursing positions within intensive care units is not expected to grow as rapidly as other nursing specialties, the rate of staff turnover should continue to be high, providing ample opportunities for nurses who wish to specialize in critical care. Critical care nursing can be a stressful environment due to the severity of patients’ medical conditions and need for detailed attention. It also requires appropriate academic training through online nursing programs or campus programs in order to provide the high level of care necessary in an intensive care unit. However, the same factors that drive some professionals away from the intensive care unit are the same attractions that often draw other registered nurses to the practice of critical care.

What is Critical Care Nursing?

Graduates of online nursing program degrees who choose to specialize in critical care nursing treat patients who require intensive monitoring. Patients in critical care settings often require life support or organ support systems, such as mechanical ventilators and enteral nutrition. Critical care populations may include pediatrics, adults, or geriatrics. A registered nurse who specializes in critical care is often the health care professional that makes the decision to call the attending physician in emergency circumstances.

Required Education to Work in Critical Care Nursing

Although registered nurses may legally practice with a hospital diploma, associate’s degree, or bachelor’s degree in nursing, employers most often prefer nursing professionals to complete a bachelor’s degree in nursing through an online nursing program or campus program. A bachelor’s degree education provides registered nurses with the communication, leadership, and critical thinking skills essential for the expanding role of nursing professionals in the health care industry.

In response to the increased emphasis on advanced education for registered nurses, over 600 RN to BSN programs came into existence by the year 2004. Many online nursing schools are now offering online nursing program degrees that have been designed specifically for working registered nurses. For example, the University of Phoenix now offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program that can be completed entirely through distance education while a student continues working as a registered nurse. Kaplan University also has an online nursing program that allows students to concentrate in a preferred specialty while completing an online nursing degree.

Qualities Necessary for Success in Critical Care Nursing

In general, nurses need to be caring, sympathetic, responsible, and detail-oriented. Critical care nurses should also be emotionally stable in order to deal with job stresses, such as crises, emergencies, and human suffering. Internship and on-the-job training while completing an online nursing program is necessary to gain the practical work experience required to practice as a critical care nurse.
