The American Psychological Association has recently described a ground-breaking new school-based program that is seeking solutions to the rising rates of depression in children. Today’s children have a 9% risk of experiencing major depression before the age of 14 and a 20% chance of experiencing at least one episode of major depression before they graduate from highschool.

Professionals with a Master of Science in School Psychology are concerned about these statistics due to their future implications. A child who has experienced major depression is further at risk for struggling with major depression as an adult. To combat this “common cold” of mental health, psychologists are using the discipline of school psychology to teach thinking habits in schools that will prevent depression.

Research from psychology graduate schools has pointed to the value of being positive in thinking and problem-solving skills. Professionals of school psychology chose to teach these skills to students at risk for major depression. Students in the new school-based program were taught to identify negative thinking patterns and replace them with positive thoughts. Areas that were targeted include self-image, thoughts about others, and thoughts about the world in general. Students were also taught assertiveness and relaxation techniques.

After the training, the professionals of school psychology followed up with the students six months and two years later. At the six-month point, children who had learned the new skills had fewer symptoms of depression and better behavior in the classroom than children who had not learned the skills. At the two-year point, children who had learned the prevention skills had a 22% rate of moderate to severe symptoms of major depression, whereas children who had not learned the skills had a 44% rate of moderate to severe major depression.

The program used in the study period is now in effect at multiple locations in honor of the original psychology graduate school that conducted the research. School systems in California, New Jersey, Texas, Minnesota, New York, and Illinois are using the program to improve mental health and classroom behavior of students.

This program serves as one of the many successes in the profession of school psychology. Psychology graduate schools such as Capella University are producing qualified graduates to continue to make advances in the discipline of school psychology. Students interested in pursuing a career in school psychology may visit College-Pages.com for an extensive list of available programs and additional resources.

Health care is the largest industry in the country, providing close to fifteen million jobs. It is an industry that will continue to grow as our population grows both larger and older. Among the universe of health care workers, management and pure administrative personnel are a relatively small segment. That ratio is going to change somewhat, as more health care in this country becomes public health care due to the rising cost of health insurance and the reduction of employee benefits in American business.

Nevertheless, the pure administrative positions in health care comprise less than ten percent of the total jobs in the field. There are some interesting trends emerging in the private sector that indicate the need for administrative personnel in the field is rising, and will continue to do so.

Because of the reluctance of insurance companies to pay for hospitalization, outpatient care has become more predominant. So, while health care providers are struggling to keep their hospital beds full, at the same time they are diversifying their facilities. Hospitals are laying off mid-level management personnel as outlying clinics are opening their doors and hiring managers. From a U.S. Labor Department report on health care employment:In some management, business, and financial operations occupations, rapid growth will be tempered by restructuring to reduce administrative costs and streamline operations. Office automation and other technological changes will slow employment growth in office and administrative support occupations; but because the employment base is large, replacement needs will continue…In many cases, it may be easier for jobseekers with health-specific training to obtain jobs and advance…Specialized clinical training is a requirement for many jobs in health care and is an asset even for many administrative jobs that do not specifically require it.

All of this suggests that a master’s degree in health care administration will have notable employment value. It suggests further that people who have had some specific medical background prior to pursuing a management role will be in sharp demand. That suggests that if you’re in the service or technical end of the medical industry, a return to school might be well worth considering.

If you’re working, online colleges are the best way to go about pursuing that master’s. Previous college credits should transfer into a non-science oriented business major such as health administration. Even without previous credits, it won’t take nearly as long as you might think.

University of Phoenix Online has the perfect degree to match up with that last projection from the Labor Department. They have two master’s degrees with double majors: one is an MBA with a master’s in nursing, and the other combines a master’s in nursing with a master’s in health administration. University of Phoenix Online also offers a master’s in health care administration and an MBA with emphasis on health care administration.

Capella University offers a master’s in health care administration. Kennedy- Western University has a master’s program in health care administration that does not overlook the competitive side of the health care business: among their areas of study are managed care, marketing, policy analysis, quality management and advanced financial systemic processes. These management degrees approach health care as the business it has become.

One of the indications that a profession has come of age is when academic pundits start arguing about what defines that profession. Computer science is a premier example of that phenomenon. Some people feel that computer science is a catchall phrase that embodies information technology (IT), software engineering, computer engineering and the microelectronics that make computers light up and hard drives spin.

Purists maintain that computer science is only the theory behind computation: the algorithms, the flow of data through the chips and into the applications. It’s a debate for a coffeehouse or a cocktail party. For people who are interested in entering the field, computer science is the study of computers and their component parts. While you can find college majors in computer science, the course load will include software design, database functions and programming. So, for purposes of this article, we will look at the master’s programs in a variety of computer related professions.

Online colleges provide the best framework for focusing on computer science. Their master’s programs include computer science as a major, along with information technology and business-oriented, integrated courses of study. Online study takes a pragmatic approach to giving the student the skills to enter the profession. Online master’s degrees are designed to give the student leadership skills for a highly placed position in his industry of choice. Many online master’s programs in computer science are for working businessmen and women who are seeking to climb the professional ladder.

University of Phoenix Online has an interesting combination of master’s programs in computer science. They have a master’s in information systems; a master’s in information systems management; and an intriguing combination of an MBA with specialization in technology management. Technology management means handling networks and that’s going to incorporate a lot of computer science.

Capella University has four online master’s programs in information technology with specializations that spell out clear career tracks:

Information Technology

General Information Security

Network Architecture and Design

Project Management and Leadership

System Design and Programming

Kennedy- Western University has an online master’s degree in computer science available. To provide an idea of what computer science means at this college, here are the core courses:

Programming Languages

Computer Science Theory

Systems Architecture

Operating Systems I

Relational Databases

Analysis of Algorithms

Object-Oriented Design

Compiler Design

Software Engineering

Artificial Intelligence

Data Communications Expert

Systems Development

Human Computer Interface Design

It’s evident that software and data are an important part of the master’s degree in computer science at Kennedy-Western. Also required is a thesis prep course and the thesis itself, which will mean lots of interaction with the faculty, via email and phone.

Boston University has a master’s in computer information systems that is taught online. The two areas of specialization are database and knowledge management, and information systems security. Information systems and information technology seem to be the terms that have supplanted computer science in a number of academic institutions. If your interests lie in the physical components of computers, you can often find a master’s program in electrical engineering with computer emphasis. But for many of the online institutions, the masters’ programs in technology are focused on what businesses can accomplish with computers because that is where the leadership needs are.

There are several well established and accredited online colleges that offer master’s degrees in computer science. Much like an MBA, the master’s in computer science (or one of its related fields) tickets the graduate for a leadership role, and the master’s programs that you will find online reflect that.

A bachelor’s degree in computer science – or in any other major – provides the liberal arts underpinning that is an essential part of higher education. It is at this level that you will find the course requirements in English composition and literature, in history in the sciences and in the arts.

Undergraduate programs usually include some sort of mathematics requirement, usually finessed by non-science oriented students with a statistics class. In computer science you will probably need polished mathematical skills at the leadership level as well as the operational. It would be wise to look at the mathematics employed in some of the courses for a master’s in computer science while you are still pursuing your bachelor’s, so that you will be prepared. If you are coming to a master’s program some years after completing your bachelor’s in information technology, a refresher course or two in math may be in order.

Capella University has an online program for a master’s in science (MS) in Information Technology, Network Architecture and Design Specialization. These are the core courses:

Technical Communications Master’s

Enterprise System and Application Development

Overview of Enterprise Applications

Project Management for Technology Professionals

System Development Theory and Practice

System Usability Analysis and Design

Enterprise Application Testing

Quality Assurance

Business Foundations

You must choose five of these specialization courses:

Network Technology

Enterprise System Security

Client Server Architecture and Design

Network Enterprise Architecture and Design

Advanced Network Technology-Routing

Advanced Network Technology-Switching

Advanced Network Technology-Remote Access

Advanced Network Technology-Troubleshooting

Ethical and Legal Considerations in Information Technology

Special Topics in Technology

The title and the curriculum of Capella’s program reflect the purpose of the degree. It provides core courses in management-level applications of computer technology, and then provides specialization options that can take the graduate in a number of directions. That is the type of pragmatism you will find in online master’s programs in computer science.

Both University of Phoenix Online and Kaplan University have MBA programs with specialization in information technology. Both are heavily business-oriented schools.

Kennedy- Western University has a master’s program in Computer Science with a fairly demanding curriculum focusing on programming and computer function:

Programming Languages

Computer Science Theory

Systems Architecture

Operating Systems I

Relational Databases

Analysis of Algorithms

Object-Oriented Design

Compiler Design

Software Engineering

Artificial Intelligence

Data Communications Expert

Systems Development

Human Computer Interface Design

The Thesis Proposal

The Thesis (9 Units)

This course of study comes complete with master’s thesis. Despite the fact that it is distance learning, many online courses provide extensive communication with the faculty that are teaching their courses. Clearly, a thesis proposal and critique is not going to be much different than an on-campus experience. Note also the number of classes in this program that will no doubt require algebra, and perhaps some calculus as well. An online master’s in computer science is the real thing, requiring real effort, and gaining the graduate real payoff.

In its broadest definition, computer science includes a number of academic specialties. Study of a computer’s functions begins with electronics and electrical engineering. Included as a matter of necessity is the study of computer operating systems: that path will lead before too long to software and databases. At that point, computer science branches into information technology (IT); somewhere between computer science and information technology you have the world of networking. In many universities, master’s degrees in information technology are available, and also in both computer science and networking. This holds true in for online education as well. We’ll take a look at all of them.

A bachelor’s degree in computer science is considered, in some academic circles, as a starting point in the sense that it provides the base education for a lot of career choices. Boston University’s Metropolitan College has an online degree in computer science that may allow the graduate “to prepare for careers in medicine, law, education, physical and life sciences, social sciences, and the humanities.” That’s a pretty broad spectrum of choices.

Boston University’s online master’s degree in computer science is also called a master’s in computer information systems, with two areas of specialization. One is in the area of security: providing the graduate with the ability to develop “solutions to guarantee secure networks and computer systems…and the ability to identify, develop, and implement highly secure networks that support organizational goals.”

The other specialization at BU online is in database and knowledge management, which provides “the skills to integrate information technology with business problems and opportunities…and a thorough understanding of technological issues in addition to business concepts and fundamentals.”

This is an excellent illustration of the fashion in which a master’s in computer science leads the professional down an avenue of specialization. Online master’s programs are often the answer for people working in the industry that want to move higher up the ladder into management. As in most professional environments, a higher level of education means a higher degree of focus on one component of the business or another.

University of Phoenix Online has a number of master’s programs in the information technology field. One is an MBA with a specialization in information technology – an example of business acumen being married to computer science skills. Kaplan University has the same online combination. University of Phoenix’s other master’s degrees involving computer science include a master’s degree in information systems, and a master’s in information systems management. Information systems in this instance almost always mean computer networks. Again, higher educational achievement leads to more focused specialization.

Colorado Technical University has an online master’s degree in information systems security. This academic specialty is really about securing computer networks and the data that flows over them. Capella University’s online master’s program in IT offers the following networking specialties:

Information Technology General Information Security Network Architecture and Design Project Management and Leadership System Design and Programming

Master’s programs online are an efficient opportunity to gain the educational background for your next professional step. They often take less time than the programs at traditional universities, and they do not conflict with working hours. Clearly, you can find a master’s in computer science online that will take you in any direction you choose.

Online classes are becoming the norm for working adults. While online formats offer a fair degree of flexibility for those requiring it in order to meet scheduling demands, much of the content delivered still lacks the interactivity and skillful entertainment of a live teacher in a traditional classroom setting. Online instruction demands a discipline and focus that most find difficult to achieve in an independent learning environment. In short, a successful delivery of an online class that supports the learning objectives and actually teaches something worthwhile takes some skill and finesse.

Classroom teachers often fail to deliver the same level of excellence in an online class as they do in a traditional classroom. Part of this failure comes in part from the failure of the teacher to recognize that the forum of online thinking is very different from classroom thinking. Successful online instructional design requires an understanding of how adults think, learn, and retain information. Keeping topics relevant to the course in as succinct a format as possible is the key to making online learning a success.

Because of the recent popularities of this format, universities have taken the lead in developing distance education master degree programs that standardizes the teaching of online classes. These master degree programs improve the rates of online teaching by addressing the fundamental differences in between the two forums and using these differences to develop formats compatible with the mode of learning.

Capella University – School of Education Capella University offers the Masters in Instructional Design for online learning. This program emphasizes the planning, organization, design, method of delivery, and evaluations of online classes.

People with associate’s degrees in criminal justice will find that the education helps them in a number of entry or lower level positions in the field. Law enforcement officers have not traditionally been required to have college-level education in order to apply. That seems to be changing slowly. While civil service exams are still involved, police and sheriff’s deputy applicants in some departments may need an associate’s degree in criminal justice or a related field. Entry level correctional officers may encounter the same requirement, depending on the jurisdiction. A recent internet job posting for a Wisconsin correctional officer (prison guard) required an associate’s degree in criminal justice.

A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice will open the door to a variety of opportunities in the field. Another recent job posting from Virginia was for the director of an inter-agency gang task force. The job description included knowledge of regional gang activities and interdiction efforts, the ability to respond to night and weekend incidents. In addition, the applicant was charged with multi-agency coordination – not always an easy task among law enforcement organizations. At the same time, the applicant had to be capable of community outreach, grant writing and funding solicitation from legislative bodies. That’s a complex set of responsibilities: the educational requirement was a bachelor’s in criminal justice.

Positions within police departments can require criminal justice degrees. Specialized inspectors such as the “Criminalistics Supervisor,” a position recently posted by the Lakewood Colorado Police Department, require a bachelor’s. This particular position is overseeing a team of forensics technicians to assemble as complete a position as possible from a crime scene. As law enforcement becomes specialized and more technology is employed, higher levels of education become the standard.

There are a number of federal inspector’s jobs that require master’s degrees. Federal civil service rankings often have college level education requirements that can serve as substitutes for service in the next lower civil service rank. What is surprising is the number of agencies that have need for people with criminal justice educations. The Small Business Administration, The Drug Enforcement Administration, various branches of the Department of Justice have divisions that require oversight – these are a few of the listings you’ll find in federal job postings. Nearly every cabinet level department has an enforcement division, and people with graduate degrees in criminal justice will fit into many of them.

State departments of fish and game have enforcement divisions, as do environmental agencies. Graduate students in criminal justice have studied the psychology of enforcement practices in large social settings. Some of those principles are applicable for crime categories such as violations on federal wildlife preserves or illegal dumping of pollutants. White collar violations require investigations, by investigative bureaus which require oversight. It is in that sort of niche that a Master of Science/Criminal Justice Administration would fit admirably.

You don’t have to dig too deeply into the internet search engines to find a remarkable number of career choices open to people with criminal justice degrees, of any level. It’s just a matter of patience, coupled with a little perseverance.

The master’s degree in criminal justice is meant to take you from a daily operational role in the criminal justice system and into management and/or research. A master’s in criminal justice may also find you a role in a corporate environment if the company is in some fashion needs the development and management of a comprehensive security system for its own facilities or contracts with some subsection of the criminal justice apparatus.

Graduate work in criminal justice will provide you with leadership skills for law enforcement, probation and parole departments, corrections, court services and public safety. Research and statistics play an important role in criminal justice and it is at the master’s level that you will qualify professionally for projects in this field.

A quick look at online job postings in this area showed an interesting mix. There was a position as “research scientist” for the Texas Juvenile Crime Prevention Center. In Ohio, the Cuyahoga County Justice System Reform Project was looking for a director. The Wyoming Survey and Analysis Center needed a manager for a criminal justice research project.

All of these jobs are for agencies that are government funded. All of them would involve extensive collection and analysis of data, requiring some computer skills. All of them are to some degree, focused on system reform. All of them are open to an individual with a master’s degree in criminal justice.

To that end, the master’s program at Capella University includes core courses in Survey and Research of Adult Development and Behavior; Ethnic and Cultural Awareness; and Survey of Research Methodology. Specialization areas include Social Change and Public Policy; History of the Juvenile Justice System; and Practices of Probation, Parole and Community Corrections (a partial list). The academic orientation for some of these course tracks is clear.

This is not to suggest that the master’s program in criminal justice won’t immerse you in study of the crime-stopping skills. The master’s level curriculum at University of Phoenix Online includes: Cyber crime and Information Systems Security; Forensic Science and Psychological Profiling; Management of Institutional Risk; Critical Incident Management; and Legal Issues in Justice and Security.

As with other areas of study, the master’s in criminal justice means management. In law enforcement, a high score on the civil service exam is no longer sufficient to move into the command ranks. Graduate studies are often required. That is why the continuing education programs for criminal justice that many online schools offer are populated with working professionals: beat cops and probation officers who want to move into management and systems analysis.

Managing criminal justice personnel is perhaps a more complex challenge than management in a corporate or some other public service area that does not involve sworn personnel. Police work takes courage, patience, tolerance, toughness and a good deal of psychological insight. There is a high burnout factor among police officers and many develop cynical attitudes.

Police work is also high profile work and often subject to public criticism. That is why so many police departments are organizations made up of courageous individuals that have morale problems. It’s a seeming contradiction, but it punctuates the fact that management of people in the law enforcement environment is going to take polished skills of many types.

A master’s program in criminal justice is generally sought by people who are interested in taking a management role somewhere in the criminal justice system or who are interested in research and teaching in the field. Because of the management focus, many of the core courses will provide the basics in business, finance, and management and computer technology.

Management roles in every aspect of criminal justice require these basics, including the command roles in law enforcement. Police captains and chiefs must be able to analyze crime data, manage budgets, handle personnel issues and understand the database systems that every police department relies on today.

Most of the management positions in criminal justice are in the public sector. Probation and parole departments, corrections facilities and rehabilitation programs are either government-run or organizations that are contracted by the government to provide these services. Understanding the basics of public administration are an important component of management in criminal justice. This will include knowledge of the budget and spending process that is unique to government. It will also require a sensitivity to the public nature of the business and the frequent exposure in the media of various criminal justice issues.

The curriculums for criminal justice master’s programs address these issues and others. There will be a class on the ethics of criminal justice, which can be a complex issue in the area of law enforcement. Ethnic and social sensitivity is a requirement for criminal justice graduate course work. Police officers and in particular, probation officers perform best when they understand the social, economic and cultural pressures that may be involved in the cases with which they come in contact. Managing people who work in these jobs requires an even more thorough understanding of environmental impact on crime.

Personnel management is also an important skill to the individual who takes his or her master’s degree in criminal justice into the private sector. Many corporations today have rightfully become very security conscious, especially those whose business operations are global in scope. An individual who joins the corporate world to oversee or overhaul a company’s security system is dealing with more than the alarms attached to the doors.

For this reason, the master’s degree curriculum will address cyber-theft and the security of online technology. Companies today spend enormous sums to protect their databases. In many cases, they are obligated by law to build layers of security into their computer systems in order to protect the privacy of their customers. There are security experts that specialize in technology security, but they also need a background in criminal justice.

They need to understand what is going on in the criminal world, what investigative techniques are necessary to identify and convict an alleged techno-thief and what the law is regarding consumer privacy. All of these issues are addressed in criminal justice graduate study. Corporate security has become as active and interesting a job market as criminal justice in the public sector. With a master’s in criminal justice, you can go in either direction.

Our world is always progressing. The rate of technological advancement and the increase of human knowledge is increasing exponentially. Society is becoming more and more competitive as the population expands. Many people at the beginning of their careers find that a bachelor’s degree is losing its value in the employment market.

It is virtually impossible to acquire a position that is beyond entry level or low level administrative jobs if you do not have at least a bachelor’s degree. The level that individuals with four year degrees can rise to is not as high as it used to be.

Advanced degrees are becoming more common in the job market, which raises the level of competition job seekers now face. Larger companies, along with some medium sized companies are setting higher degrees as the standard requirement for any position above middle management. A higher degree in the business field will most likely be an MBA. Advanced engineering degrees get a lot of attention in the technical industry. Even in this field, an engineer might not be eligible for a management position in a research lab without a business degree.

If you are seeking an advanced degree, there are now more options to choose from as far obtaining one. Many colleges now offer evening courses, and some forty percent of colleges and universities in the United States provide distance learning options. There are a number of graduate level opportunities available through accredited online educational institutions. These programs are designed for individuals who are already working and ready to climb the professional ladder.

It used to be that college was a traditional four years after high school. Many students are beginning at community colleges to cut the cost of general education courses, and then transferring to four year colleges. The expense of post-secondary education has become so high that many students begin jobs while attending school part time.

Some people with some college credits pursue advanced degrees by first finding out what classes are required to find a way to use the college experience that they do have. Then they apply their college credits towards what they need to acquire and advanced degree.

Sometimes evening course selections are limited, but that is not to say the the classes required to complete an advanced degree program are not available. Online courses offer a great deal of flexibility, making it possible for working mothers to find the time to pursue a degree. One example of a flexible online college is the University of Phoenix Online, and there are others. Phoenix Online provides thirty-five advanced degrees. Some of the programs offered include education, health care, technology and business. Higher degrees are becoming more common, but there are many opportunities for you to keep up with the times.

The internet offers a plentiful selection of options for the master’s degree in education. Education degrees on the master’s level are typically focused on a certain specialty. It is important to note that many states require master’s degrees of individuals who want to teach beyond a certain level in the public school system.

If you are interested in teaching, you should carefully examine your state’s certification requirements. Each state has it’s own set of standards. Make sure that you are up to date on what the requirements are, as some alternate credentials are accepted in some states now, due to the overwhelming shortage of teachers nationwide.

There are nine different master’s degree programs in education at the University of Phoenix Online. These include: specialty include elementary education, administration and supervision, curriculum and instruction (both child and adult), computer education, English as a second language, early childhood education, and elementary, secondary, or special education. The specialties included on this list will either prepare you for a position in administration or for teaching in a classroom.

Capella University provides a different set of online opportunities for a master’s in education. They offer administrative and management focuses for licensed K-12 teachers in the following areas: leadership in educational administration, curriculum and instruction, advance classroom instruction, and reading and literacy.

Capella University also offers the following concentrations: leadership for higher education, postsecondary and adult education, professional studies in education, instructional design for online learning, training and performance improvement, and enrollment management.

A master’s of arts in teaching is available through the online program provided by Ashford University. This master’s degree program focuses on teaching middle school through high school grades 7-12.

Kaplan University’s online master’s in education program has the following concentrations: Teaching literacy and language grades K-6; literacy and language grades 7-12; teaching special needs students; teaching technology; and teaching mathematics for both grades K-6 and 7-12. They have a standard program that will certify students to teach in the state of Iowa.

Many traditional universities offer extension master’s degree programs online in education. Approximately forty percent of the campus-based colleges and universities in the United States offer distance learning programs in some form. Education seems to be a trendy option online. Many colleges and universities offer technology and business programs online, and education tends to be offered early on as the schools expand their online programs.

Mainstream education is quickly becoming online education. online degrees and traditional degrees in education have a closing gap between them. You should be able to put your online master’s degree in education to use soon after obtaining it.

A majority of school districts across all of the states require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education from an accredited college or university. There are also other training programs for aspiring teachers that are required by the state. On the internet, you can obtain a master’s degree in education as well as receive the training necessary for many teaching certificates or licenses.

The University of Phoenix Online offers a master’s degree program in education, as well as seven other related degree programs that result in a master’s degree. Master’s degree programs on the internet are generally very practical. Phoenix Online’s master’s programs in education makes use of any previous college experience that may be applicable to the program, which expedites the amount of time it takes to finish.

There are some states that only hire those with master’s degrees to teach on the secondary level. There are often a number of subject specific courses required by the state, and the University of Phoenix Online among many other online schools, provides such coursework. Topics taught on the secondary level can be prepared for with college courses in American history, bilingual teaching, creative writing, and American literature.

Capella University offers a master’s degree for teachers who are interested in management. These include M.S. with concentrations in leadership in educational administration, curriculum and instruction, reading and literacy, and advanced classroom instruction. Some of these focuses cover the requirements for teaching on the secondary level.

At Kaplan University, on the internet, you can acquire a master’s degree in teaching with a specialization covering a specific age group. They also have a special program for those who want to teach in the state of Iowa.

Online education is incredibly valuable because it is geared for those who want to begin their career or advance professionally.

Individuals who have already started working in the health care industry often seek a master’s degree in health care management. These individuals choose programs that will qualify them to advance in their career. Sometimes, these individuals have temporary positions and they need certain credentials to become permanent, or they would like to move up in rank.

Online colleges and universities offer flexible courses for such individuals. Students might be nurses who are interested in becoming supervisors at a clinic or hospital. Other students might be billing specialists or insurance experts who desire to run the accounting department of a health care facility.

Public health is becoming increasingly important each year, and many students embarking on their post-secondary journey might major in that. Health care management degrees may also be of interest to undergraduates. There are also interesting careers related to assisted living and administration mediums that connect health providers with insurance companies.

With a master’s degree in health care management, many of the positions in these fields would become available. With transferred credits, a master’s degree in the health industry can take far less than five years to attain at an accredited online institution.

Many online schools have created programs that expedite the education process without sparing quality. Legitimate degrees can be acquired from an online school faster than at a traditional university. Many online schools offer a variety of health care management specializations.

At American Intercontinental University, both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in health care management are available. The bachelor’s degree focuses on business. Colorado Technical University Online provides a bachelor’s in business program with a concentration in health care management.

There is a master’s in health administration and a health care management MBA program available at the University of Phoenix Online. They offer master’s programs in nursing/health care education and nursing/integrative health care. Obviously, these are for management and teaching positions. The University of Phoenix offers a master’s degree in nursing with an MBA in health care management. They also provide a dual degree with a master’s in nursing and a master’s in health administration.

These degree programs represent the blend of business and medicine that is involved in health care management. Online educational facilities have become unprecedented in helping individuals pursue that mixture.

What’s even more exciting is a program being developed to allow students to work with geometry and math equations interactively.

These new software technologies have been sold to educators and schools all throughout the nation. Those who graduate with a degree in Masters of Education in Instructional Technology are excited to see the how well these new products perform. Both students and teachers will gain much from the lessons learned with these new technologies. Computers could act as teaching aids to help educators develop lesson plans that complement each student’s learning style.

Going Beyond Educators – Supporting Instructional Technology

Both investors and the Government support new technology in education. The National Science Foundations has given grants to some members of the Northwest Education Cluster. Even venture capitalists are enthusiastic about the future of these technologies and bombarding company board meetings look for the next great product.

I have high hopes for the future MBA holders of the world. I am hoping that as they get their feet wet in the working world and pursue this great degree, that they will learn from the example of their bosses, and move forward with the knowledge that sometimes, no matter how much education you have, there isn’t an excuse for being unbearable in the workplace.

I am writing this in light of a boss I know that single handedly turned a safe and secure corporate America into a horrific experience with his public relations stunts and lack of honesty. It is important to keep things in perspective, and realize that there are good things in every person. This is definitely true, and I would be able to easily sit down and write a list of this particular boss’ good qualities, but unfortunately the bad has outweighed the good. It compels me to write this so that future managers of the world know that some tactics are just not good, no matter how good your intentions may be.

Double Standards

In this particular company, we mentor young people, and they are deducted points and are punished accordingly for using vulgarities on campus. In turn, our president spends his days swearing up and down our hallways, within ear shot of the students. This sets the model for hypocrisy and though he has since had this brought to his attention and he has cut down significantly, he has still set the example of hypocrisy. This is a very difficult thing to reverse.

In other instances, this has been taken a little bit farther, by demanding loyalty from employees while demeaning them at the same time. Know that, as a manager, your leadership is most effective when other people feel as if you have “been there” at their level. People are going to respect you much more if you come alongside them instead of trying to be in front of them pulling the leash.

Honesty

Bosses who are continually dishonest sometimes believe that it will not catch up with them because they are the head of a company. Chances are though, that your employees are on to you or soon will be, and there is always a higher up somewhere, somehow to complain to. People never like being lied to. It is probably the quickest way to violate any trust as well as being the most difficult to earn back.

Lying to scare, coerce, or convince employees to partake in whatever your wish is for them to do, is not going to get you anywhere in the long run. Your mother told you that honesty is the best policy. And really, they told the truth.

Know that integrity outruns deceit and that investment in people is going to outshine any investments in education. Recognize your audience and work accordingly. You have been put in a position of leadership for a distinct reason. You have been given a higher purpose. Use that in a positive way.

The continuing demand for graduate degrees is growing, online schools are more appealing now that ever before to those returning to school.

Bert Valencia is the vice president of distance education programs at Thunderbird, the Garvin School of International Management.

Valencia said Thunderbird’s Global MBA program requires students only spend four weeks in a classroom.

“Students can be located anywhere, as long as they can communicate they can be a part of the class,” he said.

Graduate degrees obtained at online universities and colleges have become more attractive because they provide the same level of education that a traditional university would, but from the comfort of your choosing. This has also become attractive to those with full time jobs and parents.

To complete an online MBA education however, classes alone are not considered sufficient. Networking is also a big party of the MBA program.

Networking is so critical to success, Thunderbird requires that MBA students spend the first few weeks at the Glendale campus. After eight monghts they will then get to travel to Genva for a week.

In addition, they may also spend a week in Beijing and a final week back at Thunderbird.

“If you have a job that requires travel, it is hard to pursue an MBA that doesn’t require you to be at a specific location,” Valencia said.

These programs improve the quality of the education by getting students enrolled that are established in their field.

Officials expect enrollment numbers to double in the next three years.

In nearly every state in the nation, teachers must be credentialed by the state. Traditionally, teaching required a masters degree and at least one year of student teaching, however, the requirements are beginning to loosen up. Online schools are now responsible for providing online programs for all academic courses that are required for teaching certifications. For working adults that wish to become teachers, this provides a distance learning opportunity that reduces the classroom obligations for a teaching credential to a bare minimum. Some online schools have even developed student teaching programs with participating public schools.

The field of special education is also offered through many distance learning programs. There are many specialization options in special education today and most of them can be pursued by taking education courses online. You can obtain a masters degree in special education with specialization in gifted and talented students. There are degrees in education with specialization in students with special needs. Some of these online programs were made with the purpose of providing the training that is needed for special education certification: the online schools that do so generally have campuses in the states where they provide certification training.

Through distance learning you can begin a career in education or teaching through many different paths. As with all online programs, you can do it at your own pace. And online schools are usually willing to work with you in order to earn the certification requirements needed.

If you have substantial college experience already, you can shoot for a masters in business administration (MBA) or in management through an online school. Once again, these online programs can get you that degree by using your previous credits and providing you with the essential online training. Many online business programs also provide masters degrees with specialization areas such as marketing, public administration and technology management. With this type of online degree an online degree you should be able to move into a management position and feel knowledgeable and experienced with the skills and education you have received.

The nature of managerial jobs varies as significantly as the range of administrative services required by organizations. After completing the business courses necessary to earn an online business degree, you might become a contract administrator assigned to oversee the preparation and execution of contracts related to the purchase or sale of equipment, products, or services. If you have used your distance learning opportunity to obtain a masters degree, you might be the person engaged in analysis, negotiation and closure of those contracts.

What is so great about the distance learning program is that choices and decisions are all yours. Because online schools are mostly used by adults wishing to further their education, the degrees available – such as business and management – are designed to help students get the career opportunity of their choice.

However, thanks to the Internet, obtaining a masters or graduate degree on-line is a reality. Most college graduates feel that they don’t have time to obtain a masters degree while entering the workforce and balancing a family. The benefit of an on-line masters degree is that it is flexible, more so than a degree from a traditional college or university. It allows you to study from the comfort of your own home and frees up time in your day for family and work. Getting a masters or graduate degree allows you to obtain that promotion and salary increase you deserve. Individuals with a master degree typically earn twice that of a person with a bachelors degree, and 4 times that of those with high-school diplomas.

With reasons like these, it’s no wonder why on-line master’s degree are more popular than ever!
