The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is currently developing the James Webb Space Telescope, a piece of equipment with over 400 technical requirements. The intended mission of the telescope is to circle the earth more than 1 million miles away and record facts about the expanding universe. Completing this surreal task requires the expertise of a project manager. This type of management goes far beyond conventional bachelor degree in management careers like retail management.

What is a Project Manager?

The position of project manager was recently profiled in the Occupational Outlook Quarterly from the Department of Labor. Bachelor degree in management graduates may serve as project managers for everything from planning an annual awards ceremony to designing a new company product. Management degree graduates who work as project managers have the responsibility of providing direction for an assigned project while balancing the time, money, and scope involved in the venture.

Although projects vary widely throughout the profession, the central process for project management involves setting goals, creating a plan, monitoring progress, and, lastly, wrapping up the final details required for completion of the project. During the course of the project, the project manager facilitates efficient work by maintaining good communication among team members and upper management. Some bachelor degree in management graduates act as project managers within the scope of a job description, while other business management degree graduates fashion an entire career out of project management.

Required Education to be a Project Manager

According to the Department of Labor, project managers typically must have a bachelor degree in management or another discipline related to the job in order to enter the profession. Training in subjects such as team building, risk management, and planning can be helpful. Completing courses in the specific industry one plans to enter can also be useful in gaining a competitive edge in the employment market.

The Project Management Institute website contains more information related to being a project manager. PMI also has helpful information for students looking to attain a degree, finacial aid, or credentials in Project Management at http://www.pmiteach.org/student_resources/. For an extensive list of available bachelor degree in management programs, prospective students may visit College-Pages.com, the education and career resource website.

Accounting systems for large businesses are often incorporated into larger software systems that provide multiple functions. One of the terms for this type of database programming is ‘enterprise resource planning’, or ERP. The concept behind ERP is that income and expense data of all types and from multiple locations is assembled into a single program: one that provides corporate management with the tools it needs to run the business effectively.

There are at least two major accounting issues facing almost any large corporation: integration and scalability. Many corporations have acquired businesses – former competitors, perhaps – whose accounting systems need to be incorporated into the corporate program. Often, those accounting systems are different software programs, or are running on different platforms – one on UNIX, one on Microsoft. Scalability means that an accounting software program must be able to grow with the business that is using it, including major growth spurts such as acquisitions.

ERP programs treat accounting as one component of a larger data gathering program. Accordingly, they are often designed to integrate with a number of different accounting programs, or at least be adapted to do so. As a final variable, accounting programs can be written in a number of computer languages, and integrating programs must take that challenge into account as well.

Major firms selling enterprise management software include Oracle, Microsoft Business Decisions, SAP and Great Plains. These software packages include all of the standard accounting functions along with customer relations management (CRM) tools, project management tools, sales programs and other specialized information formats.

Instead of accounting functions all working off of an Excel spreadsheet format, they are provided in modules and tied together to meet the needs of the business. Software of this size and complexity is rarely sold off-the-shelf. Programs are customized to interface with existing software and the languages that they use.

Expense entries, for example, become a simple process. The software categorizes the expense and places it in the appropriate record or records, applies any manipulation necessary (such as taxation category), enters that record and includes it in any periodic report that the system is designed to generate. Simple entries then become tax records, a payable invoice and part of multiple reports that are used to analyze business functions.

Most accounting functions are handled in similar fashion and can be entered from multiple sites. Payroll functions are automated based on the original entry for the employee; withholding functions and payroll records are automatically updated. Elsewhere, reports, charts and any regulatory information needed that include the cost of personnel are generated for the purpose of business analysis.

Such is the nature of modern day big-business accounting. Making it all fit together is an expensive process that involves costly software and pricey consulting technicians. There is an entire class of software called “middleware,” whose sole purpose in the digital universe is to provide the interface capability between existing database programs, accounting programs, retail point-of-purchase programs, and other components that need to be pieced together.

As computers, computer functions (such as email) and computer networks have become a universal fact of life in the business world, the academic community has begun to evolve its teaching disciplines accordingly. Nowhere is this more evident than among the online colleges, which tend to be a little less bound by tradition and a little more job-oriented. Many people today turn to online education as an extension of their earlier college experience. Accordingly, there is less focus on the liberal arts foundation that is important to young people coming out of high school, but less so to those already in the job market.

University of Phoenix Online has a comprehensive series of bachelor’s and master’s programs centered on the IT (information technology) component of computer science. A number of those degrees are actually majors in business with specialization in information technology. These are the University of Phoenix Online technology degrees available via distance education:

Bachelor of Science in Business/e-Business

Bachelor of Science in Business/Information Systems

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology/Visual Communication

Master of Business Administration/Technology Management

Master of Information Systems

Master of Information Systems/Management

The University of Phoenix Online degrees are clearly business oriented. One of their choices is an MBA with specialization in information technology. These IT online programs are available to working professionals. It is becoming increasingly common to acquire additional education as a requirement for moving up the management ladder. In our digital society, many times promotion in business is incumbent on education in computer science.

Capella University has, as one of its online academic divisions, the School of Business and Technology. Their assumption is that students will be professionals upon returning to school, as the only online offerings in the department are information technology master’s degrees. An online Capella University Master’s of Science in Information Technology will have one of the following specializations:

Information Technology

General Information Security

Network Architecture and Design

Project Management and Leadership

System Design and Programming

People who pursue these master’s degrees are clearly people who want to specialize in the computer science field at a leadership level in a business environment. Capella has a special service on their website that will help you determine the transferable credits you have from previous college experience.

Colorado Technical University has two online master’s in business administration programs that specialize in the computer field. Those are an MBA in Technology Management and an MBA in IT/Business Transformation. This last degree sounds like a specialization in converting from a paper-driven business to an organization with an electronic infrastructure.

Kaplan University offers an online bachelor’s degree in business with a focus on e-business. They also have an MBA program that specializes in IT. The academic cross-breeding of computer science and business grows more widespread with the development of each new business function that stems from computer technology. The retail business on the internet is one example of an enormous business opportunity that, after a shaky start, has developed into a multibillion dollar business segment in the last five years. Nowadays, computer-driven business opportunities develop and mature with remarkable speed.

The use of information technology in today’s business world is an absolute necessity in order to be productive and stay competitive. While it is true that business value does not come from technology itself, but rather from changes in business processes, those changes could not happen without the use of more and more sophisticated information technology.

One of the most obvious uses of information technology is the wireless hot spots that are being created in some of the largest American cities. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is in the process of creating wi-fi hot spots all over the city, and this spring, Chicago plans to join the wi-fi party. This development allows wireless computer usage all over these cities, and makes business that much easier to perform. More and more cities will follow lead and soon everyone will be wireless. It is an astonishing accomplishment because an all-mobile workplace will change everything about the way business is done.

A quick scan of the headlines in any business newspaper quickly establishes the importance of information technology. “AT&T, Yahoo Link Web to Cingular Mobile Phones”, “Low- Cost Mobile Phones Planned for One Billion Users”, “AOL Teams With WebEx for Enterprise IM”, “Wireless to Organize – and Maybe Save – Lives”, “UN Targets Tobacco Advertising on the Internet”, “Amazon in Talks With Music Companies on Digital Service”– these are just a few examples of the usage of technology in the business world. New products are developed daily. Unless you are an information technology specialist, it is extremely difficult to keep track.

One of the 30 trends for 2006, according to insight.com is the pursuit of the “frictionless business platform,” where companies have to build platforms that can make their companies flexible, frictionless, “Flat” and able to use technology to increase revenue as well as keep the infrastructure running. There is now virtualization software that can help consolidate information technology assets and cut costs.

An Indiana ad agency used remote-connection technology to set up a virtual practice in New York, without opening a big office there. The cost savings involved, which would have been impossible without information technology, are enormous.

In order for information technology to play a critical role in business transformation, however, all the IT professionals constantly have to learn new skills and capabilities for broader and broader arenas. Besides the technology perspective, they must also have a business perspective. The mission and culture of information technology professionals must remain dynamic, and new processes developed to show dramatic improvement is the bottom line of the business. The information technology available can help a company define, measure, improve and redesign its end- to-end business processes. This involves system analysis, project management and implementation.

Talented people and strategies will always count as much as hot information technology products, but it is the combination of the two factors that will make your business succeed. So don’t fall behind in the technology world. Make sure your information technology and your IT professionals are always at the top of their game.

Since the creation of formal business education, colleges of Business Administration began appearing with specialized trainings and certifications. With big business becoming so prevalent in the United States and formal business education being established, colleges of Business Administration are now offering more advanced degree and certification programs in the educational forum. These more advanced degrees offered by colleges of Business Administration can be focused on Management, Accounting, and Marketing, Employee Relations, and Information Technology.

Today there are several options when choosing a college of Business Administration. Never has it been more convenient to receive a continuing education than today, with most colleges of Business Administration focusing on flexibility for the student. This flexibility is offered through the ability of the student to now obtain a degree online and more convenient evening and weekend courses for those students who wish to attend classes. Colleges of Business Administration have made education more accessible in the past by offering distance learning courses, in which materials and lessons were sent through service. However, this convenience has now been surpassed by one of the most common sources for formal education today – the Internet. These online degrees are increasingly being accepted as just as valuable as degrees provided by traditional on-campus programs offered by colleges of Business Administration. Several Colleges of Business Administration offer financial assistance and credit for prior learning.

In the college of Business Administration students may seek a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration as well as a Master’s and Doctorate degree. Colleges of Business Administration seek to prepare the individual to effectively organize companies, manage resources, oversee accounting and purchasing, analyze financials, develop critical and strategic thinking, and to manage risks and costs. Courses develop an understanding of management skills; the ability to work in a team based environment, and the comprehension and awareness of cultural issues in the business arena. Topics covered in degree programs offered by Colleges of Business Administration include Contract Procurement, IT Management, Financial Statement Analysis, Small Business Consulting, Legal Strategies, Personnel Management, Marketing Strategies, New Product Development, Business Forecasting, and Labor Economics. Several Master’s programs offer Mergers and Acquisitions, Advanced Corporate Finance, and Macrofinance.

Colorado Technical University offers a complete online degree program. Also offered at Colorado Technical University and other colleges of Business Administration are certification programs in Project Management, Information Technology, and Business Transformation. Specialty degrees are also offered by Colleges of Business Administration. Jones International University offers degrees in Business Administration with specialties in Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Global Enterprise Management, Health Care Management, Information Security Management, Information Technology management, Negotiation and Conflict management, and Project Management. Other Colleges of Business Administration offer specialties in Human Resource Management, e-Business, and Health Services.

College has evolved drastically over the past few decades. Studying liberal arts for four years is a thing of the past. Today’s college student is more likely to have given some thought to the purpose of his or her college education. That thought process may well conclude that an undergraduate degree has a far more limited impact in the job market today than just twenty years ago.

Accordingly, if a college student’s opportunity for study is initially limited to four years, then a bachelor’s degree in business administration may be the most valuable four-year degree within the curriculum. A bachelor’s in business administration is the ticket to an entry level or mid-level position in the traditional business structure in any number of departmental roles.

A graduate with a degree in business administration could break into a corporation in sales, in marketing, in the accounting end of the operation, in project management – it’s a degree that says the person presenting this resume is competent and sufficiently trained to function (and be trusted) in a variety of posts. There are not many bachelor’s degrees that provide that sort of cross-functional promise to an HR department.

The business administration major is learning about the several aspects of business at both a macro- and micro-level. When the student has completed the bachelor’s degree in business administration, he or she knows enough about each of those aspects to be conversant with them. The student should understand the role of each department or subdivision of a business and be equipped to take on minor roles with competence.

Many, if not most of today’s college students coming out of high school understand that an undergraduate degree has limited value above the middle management level. In the corporate world, the best foundation for nearly any sort of graduate work is a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Degrees in economics and finance are impressive, but a degree in business administration gives the graduate a multifaceted value to the potential employer.

If individuals with a bachelor degree in business administration want to raise the educational bar, they are equipped with the knowledge and background needed move on to graduate studies. These students can consider an MBA or a management degree; they can focus on other related areas such as marketing or IT or global business opportunity without too much concern for the core areas of study which have already been learned.

A bachelor’s in business administration matches up almost as well with a law degree. Attorneys in corporate firms have gotten to be acquainted more with information about business practices than with the tax laws that apply. It is also true that attorneys who seek opportunities in the public sector will find that the underpinnings of a business administration degree round out the resume nicely. A bachelor’s degree in business administration is an extremely valuable asset, whether acquired online or on campus.

Perhaps thirty years ago, a liberal arts bachelor’s degree was enough to draw consideration for at least an entry-level position in the business world. Fifteen years ago, the same level of graduate work was required to move up the ladder to any significant degree. Today, many undergraduates begin their freshman year thinking ahead to a field of graduate study and select an undergraduate major to match anticipated graduate studies.

What will get you where you want to go? Is it a BS in Economics, with an MBA? Or is it perhaps a bachelor’s degree in international finance, with a law degree to top it off? Many ambitious young people, who are willing to spend the years and take out the loans, design their educations in just such a fashion. One of the best choices for a four-year degree is the bachelor’s degree in business administration.

This degree serves a number of purposes. It is an excellent door-opener for entry- level opportunities in the corporate world following graduation. It is a catch-all category that can fit you into project management, marketing, accounting and other business operations niches with equal ease. It is also a degree that provides the opportunity to focus on specialties within the corporate world.

Westwood College offers two focal areas in its Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration program: Accounting and Marketing and Sales. Ashford University has a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Management. Kaplan University offers a BS in Business Administration with a focus on Information Systems Management. You can emerge from your four-year period of study with a highly specialized bachelor’s degree in business administration which, to some human resources departments, will add up to a bachelor’s in business with additional educational experience enclosed.

It is also an excellent foundation for graduate study. The obvious choice is using a bachelor’s in business administration as a launching pad for an MBA. However many undergraduates are hearing from their counselors that a degree in business administration is also an excellent feeder for graduate work in international relations, international finance, and even law.

Many attorneys who choose not to join a law firm will opt for a role within a corporate structure. A general counsel to any corporation will need to understand the operational structure of their employer and the business world in general. The same is true of attorneys who join large firms that specialize in business law. Graduates emerging from law school face the same job hunting challenge that newly-minted college graduates face. For a corporate law firm, an attorney with an educational background in business is going to have instant value at the entry level.

For those of us who are seeking a solid ticket into the professional world, a bachelor’s degree in business administration is an excellent choice. The curriculum will prepare you for a variety of roles at entry, or mid level. The credential itself will give you a boost for promotional consideration.

For years the MBA has had a prestige that no other master’s degree can claim. During the boomtown days of the late nineties and into the new millennium, the MBA was an instant ticket to a lucrative, interesting job. To a certain extent, it still is. At Wharton, the University of Pennsylvania Business School, 90% of its 2005 graduating class had jobs lined up on graduation day, with an average starting salary of $100,000.

That’s a top school in the Ivy League where corporate recruiters no doubt descended like flies. Getting a master’s degree in business administration online is a little less glamorous. It is also a lot cheaper, not in Pennsylvania, and can have as profound an effect on your life, as it did for those young ladies and gentlemen in Philadelphia.

Online master’s programs in business administration are perhaps the best example of successful distance learning. People who opt for an online MBA program will have completed college, which means that they bring some study habits with them to the home office. They tend to be beyond the college years, which often indicates that it’s a choice clearly made and a serious pursuit. The opportunities for new MBA graduates are still robust. Moreover, as the “new economy” has evolved over the last several years, so have the areas of specialization in MBA programs, giving the student an opportunity to focus on a career area of choice.

Colorado Technical University offers no less than eight specialties in online MBA programs. These options include: Accounting. Finance. Health Care Management. Human Resource Management. Information Technology Management. Project Management. Business Management. Executive MBA.

Capella University has online Master’s in Business Administration programs with specialties in marketing, finance, and accounting. University of Phoenix Online has an MBA program that includes most of the above choices, and also offers an MBA program with a specialization in global management.

Those kinds of career options can make all the evening hours at the computer worthwhile. And there is no doubt that an MBA on the resume will shorten the job search cycle considerably. It is true that over the last five years there has been a glut of newly-minted MBAs coming into the job market. Nonetheless, the degree stills carries considerable weight when a resume is making its way through the HR process. A degree obtained after an initial excursion into the business world holds a lot of value.

People who are willing to work in order to achieve advancement will impress a personnel manager in the business world. An online master’s in business administration is proof of that uncompromising ambition. An MBA couples nicely with existing work experience. If you are in the health care field and wish to move up the management chain, you can acquire an online master’s in business administration in the health care field. If you are in human resources or interested in labor relations, there are online MBA programs with an HR focus on negotiation and conflict. There is an astonishing variety of professional avenues that can be widened with an online MBA.
