Choosing to practice as a psychologist usually leads to the pursuit of advanced education in psychology. Psychology graduate schools offer training in a wide range of sub-disciplines within the field, including:

Sport psychology

Clinical psychology

Counseling psychology

School psychology

Educational psychology

Another potential specialty within the field, made possible through advanced education, is experimental and research psychology.

What do Experimental and Research Psychologists Do?

Psychology graduate schools prepare experimental and research psychologists to study the behavior of humans and animals. Research is conducted at universities, research centers, and government and nonprofit organizations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, some of the most popular areas of research in psychology include: Motivation. Thought. Learning and memory. Sensory and perceptual processes. Effects of substance abuse. Genetic and neurological factors that contribute to behavior.

The Department of Labor also predicts that research psychologists will be called upon more often to develop effective marketing and statistical analysis tools in the coming years.

Required Education to Work as an Experimental and Research Psychologist

A PhD in general psychology or a related discipline is usually required to conduct research in university and academic settings. However, the first step is to earn a graduate degree in general psychology. Psychology graduate schools, such as Capella University, provide training in cognitive and affective psychology, research methods, psychology of learning, and inferential statistics. Students may then streamline into the Doctor of Philosophy in General Psychology program to further develop their research skills.

Prospective students should use the resource information available from College-Pages.com, the education and career resource website, for an extensive list of psychology graduate schools. Students will also find additional articles that provide resource information for educational and career decisions.

Social scientists, including sociologists, have one of the highest education levels of all professions. Approximately 50% of professionals with a career in sociology work for federal, state, and local governments. A student entering a career with a sociology degree may help governments solve social problems and develop public policy or may alternately choose to pursue a career in management, sales, or teaching. The potential for a career with a degree in sociology is as wide as the discipline itself.

The Discipline of Sociology

Sociology is the study of society and human social interaction. It is concerned with social dynamics and the effects of groups on individuals. Professionals with a career in sociology focus on groups as small as the family and as large as the global population. The following several specializations are possible with a sociology career: Education Family Social Psychology Political Sociology Gender Relations Gerontology Criminology Demography. Career Options with an Undergraduate Sociology Degree

According to the American Sociological Association, students entering a career with a sociology degree have increased competitiveness over other liberal arts majors pursuing similar positions. Possible entry-level jobs include research assistant, administrative aide, and management or sales trainee. Students may also pursue a teaching career with a sociology major at the elementary or secondary school level. Additional education classes are necessary for students who wish to enter teaching as a career.

Some students who wish to pursue a career with a degree in sociology choose to attend programs such as Ashford University’s Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management with a specialization in Sociology. Ashford University boasts that its graduates are prepared to enter sales, retail, small business management, government, and nonprofit jobs.

Career Options with an Advanced Sociology Degree

A graduate degree in sociology allows a student to further specialize in a career in sociology. Graduate degree alumni may be able to teach at a community college. A sociology career in a higher academic setting usually requires a PhD in sociology, which allows a professional to pursue a sociology career in research and teaching at the university level. The majority of a specialized career in sociology involves academic research and writing within a university setting. The results of professionals’ sociology career research serve to assist government agencies, lawmakers, and educators in solving social problems and forming public policies.

Job Outlook for Sociologists

For the professional who chooses a specialized career in sociology, job growth is expected to be only as high as 8% through the year 2014. This is, in large part, due to the limited employment options outside of the government and university setting. Professionals pursuing a specialized career in sociology are expected to find the most opportunities in policy and research positions.

For professionals who choose to pursue an alternate career with a sociology degree, job prospects are expected to grow faster. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that Human Resources, Training, and Labor Relations Managers will experience an 18 – 26% increase in employment through the year 2014. Other specific management careers may also be viewed at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics website.

Students interested in pursuing a career in sociology may contact Ashford University. College-Pages.com is another valuable source of information with an extensive list of available programs, as well as education and career resources.

Looking for an alternative to counseling, Meredith Silvia accepted a job as a usability engineer after graduating with her bachelor’s degree in psychology and government. She seeks to understand the ways in which people learn and remember knowledge and applies that information towards making hardware, software, and websites more user-friendly. Silvia ’s job makes other employees’ jobs simpler.

With the end user in mind, Silvia meets with a variety of parties during the design process. She first interviews groups of customers to determine their needs for the particular program or website. Next she moves on to the software engineers, promoting layouts and colors that will help to avoid employee confusion. Finally, Silvia draws on her education from her bachelor’s degree in psychology to anticipate what employees will want to accomplish with the program or website. Determining which choices will be available and when users will be able to make them is one of the most important steps in designing efficient tools.

In order to better determine what users will want to accomplish, Silvia regularly performs usability tests. Initially, a piece of paper with the program layout is placed in front of the test subject to mimic what he or she would see on a computer screen.Silvia then asks the user to point to a button of his or her choosing. After pointing, another piece of paper is whipped in front of the viewer to replace the previous “screen”.

Another benefit of a bachelor’s degree in psychology is the training to be a good investigator. Usability engineers must probe test subjects in order to discover the reasons for their choices. For example, Silvia says that sometimes a user will say a page should have a print button available. Further investigation into the reason for that need may reveal that the user simply wants to get a better look at the page. The need would then best be served by creating an improved display rather than adding a print button.

Silvia also holds that a usability engineer must be skilled in the art of persuasion in order to work with the user and introduce changes. Usability engineers also require good oral and written communication skills along with a certain amount of creativity to find innovative solutions to difficult problems.

There is no formal path to becoming a usability engineer. However, having a bachelor’s degree in psychology is very helpful in understanding the behavior and choices of employees. Technical knowledge is a must as well.Silvia learned her technical skills by working as a tester, technical writer, and trainer. In addition, usability engineers should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment in order to meet the tight deadlines sometimes imposed.

Students interested in more information on becoming a usability engineer may go to the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society webpage. Prospective students may also contact Ashford University for more information on starting a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. College-Pages.com is another useful source of information with an extensive list of available programs and additional educational resources.

As one of the fastest growing and most highly compensated fields in psychology, organizational psychology and development may be well worth considering as a career choice. A brief Wikipedia search defines organizational psychology and development as a field that goes beyond general psychology and applies psychological principals to the work place. Organizational psychology is used to increase productivity and improve the quality of workers’ lives. Programs such as the Organizational Psychology and Development degree at American InterContinental University teach students how to understand the dynamics of human behavior and how to use that knowledge to solve organizational challenges.

A Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Psychology and Development can lead to numerous job opportunities. American InterContinental University boasts that its graduates hold positions in human resources, training and development, and customer service. Management consulting in the areas of strategic planning, quality management, and organizational change are but a few additional possibilities laid out in the most recent Occupational Outlook Handbook from the U.S Department of Labor.

With further training through graduate education, the opportunities in organizational psychology and development continue to expand. Many graduates go on to specialize in disciplines such as employment law, personnel selection, coaching and development, and organizational design. Another increasingly popular job function is management coaching in which a specialized psychologist counsels management on aspects like organizational culture and group dynamics.

One of the attractive aspects of organizational and development psychology is that it encompasses a wide array of disciplines. Depending on the specific career path, disciplines like social psychology, clinical psychology, statistics, economics, and even business law may be utilized. The possibilities are indeed endless.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, overall employment in the field of psychology is expected to grow faster than average through the year 2014. Specifically for organizational psychologists, demand will increase to facilitate workplace diversity and discrimination issues and to boost employee retention. The overall job outlook certainly looks promising.

Although a graduate degree is required to earn the average median income of $71,400 reported in the Occupational Outlook Handbook, a bachelor’s degree can be a good first step towards specializing in organizational psychology. The Bachelor of Business Administration in Organizational Psychology and Development at American InterContinental University can also serve as preparation for a Master of Business Administration in Organizational Psychology and Development if that is a student’s ultimate goal.

There are several professional organizations to check out for more information about the field of organizational psychology. The Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (www.soip.org) has up-to-date news related to the field as well as a directory of smaller local groups. The Professional I-O Psychologist Network (www.piop.net) also has information about research, jobs, and internships in the field. Finally, College-Pages.com is a user-friendly website that can help prospective students locate a suitable online degree program. For many students, organizational psychology and development could turn out to be an ideal career.

A recently released study from the U.S. Justice Department estimated that more than half of all prison inmates have signs of mental illness. Unfortunately, less than a third of those inmates actually receive appropriate treatment for their symptoms from a professional with a Master of Science in Clinical Psychology. From survey results, the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics determined that a large portion of inmates have suffered from major depression, mania, hallucinations, delusions, and other psychotic disorders within the past year. Of those receiving treatment, the most prevalent treatment method was prescription medication.

In Pennsylvania, the rising percentage of inmates with mental health problems is finally leveling off thanks to improved access to treatment. According to an article from the associated press of the American Psychological Association, every inmate in the Pennsylvania correctional system is screened by a clinician. Disciplines, such as clinical psychology, are extremely important in identifying and correcting mental health problems in prisons and jails. Clinical psychology is the largest discipline within the field of psychology, encompassing professionals who work in counseling centers, private practices, clinics, and hospitals. Professionals with a Master of Science in Clinical Psychology often perform diagnostic tests to identify mental illness, administer psychotherapy, and create behavior modification programs. Although they typically do not prescribe medication, they may work in cooperation with physicians to get a patient started on an appropriate prescription.

Many aspiring psychologists are opting to attend distance programs through schools such as Capella University in order to earn a Master of Science in Clinical Psychology. Upon completion of their degree, they may choose to practice in a community mental health center. Critics of the recent U.S. Justice Department study are calling for increased funding of mental health treatment outside the nation’s prisons and jails. Citizens who fail to receive treatment for a mental health problem, and consequently end up in jail or prison for unruly behavior, place an unnecessary burden on the criminal justice system.

In addition to increased funding is the need for mental health professionals with a desire to serve the inmate and community population. Typically, students first complete a bachelor’s degree in psychology such as the online psychology degree available through American InterContinental University (AIU). The Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology often permits a graduate to obtain an entry level position in a community mental health clinic. If further specialization is desired, programs such as the Master of Science in Clinical Psychology at Capella University can give professionals extra preparation to work within the correctional system. Prospective students are encouraged to visit College-Pages.com, the education and career resource, for a complete list of available programs.

Genetic counseling, a rapidly growing profession, is what some might call a hybrid career. Genetic counselors enter the profession through any number of backgrounds, including biology, genetics, nursing, psychology, public health, and social work and hold a wide variety of degrees, such as a Master of Science in Psychology or a Master of Science in Social and Community Service. In short, a genetic counselor is half scientist and half counselor.

What Does a Genetic Counselor Do?

After earning a Master of Science in Psychology, a Master of Science in Social and Community Service, or a degree in another appropriate discipline, a genetic counselor usually works as a healthcare professional. Families with a birth defect or genetic abnormality in their history will often seek the services of a genetic counselor for advice concerning the risks of conceiving children. Genetic counselors may also provide information and support for patients at risk of inheriting a genetic disease. Scientific testing can determine whether the disease is present, and the genetic counselor can then interpret the results for the patient and provide support as needed.

Prenatal Genetic Counseling

One of the most common reasons patients will seek out the services of a genetic counselor with a Master of Science in Psychology or a Master of Science in Social and Community Service is to undergo testing for an unborn child. Again, scientific testing screens the genes of the fetus for any genetic abnormalities, such as Down’s Syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis, and Huntington’s Disease. The genetic counselor is responsible for explaining the results to the parents and helping them decide the appropriate course of action when necessary. If the news is bad, the genetic counselor can direct the family to appropriate community resources and offer counseling support.

Genetic Counseling for Adult-Onset Diseases

Another reason patients seek out a genetic counselor is to find out if a genetic condition or a genetic susceptibility to a disease exists that will later emerge in adulthood. The genetic counselor can first help the patient decide whether to be tested at all. In cases where the risk of an incurable disease is high, it can be best not to find out depending on the patient’s preferences and ethical principles. As public awareness of genetic testing increases, the genetic counselor must also be able to explain the concept of genetic susceptibility. Catherine Wicklund, MS, a genetic counselor in the OB/GYN department of the University of Texas Medical School, notes that just because a person is susceptible to a disease, such as Adult-Onset Diabetes, it does not mean that such a person is 100% certain to suffer from the condition.

Steps to Pursuing a Career as a Genetic Counselor

Students who wish to pursue a career in genetic counseling must first be certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. They must also earn a master’s degree in an appropriate discipline. Common degrees include a Master of Science in Psychology or a Master of Science in Social and Community Service. Many aspiring professionals are now choosing to enter distance education programs such as those designed by Capella University. The convenience and sophistication of numerous, innovative distance education programs are allowing students to access quality training anytime and anyplace.

The revolutionary book became an addition to nearly every manager’s library. Large corporations, such as Sodexho, made Fish! required reading for all company managers. The effective advice from the book stemmed from a fish market where enthusiasm and respect for human factors in the workplace made it a profitable success as well as a fun place to work.

Programs such as the Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management at Ashford University are honing in on the human side of management in order to prepare its graduates for success in the job market. According to Ashford University, human factors of management include:

understanding group dynamics

ethics

human resources issues

effective communication

The program has been specifically designed for professionals who already have some work experience in their field of choice and wish to further develop their management skills.

With over 30 areas of concentration available within the Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management program, Ashford University graduates go on to develop a variety of careers. Many choose to go into sales, retail, small business management, government, or non-profit organizations. Some graduates also choose to start a business, or work with the local, state, or federal government.

Professionals who wish to further specialize in the human side of management may wish to choose psychology as their area of concentration within the Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management program. Up to twelve credits of psychology courses may be transferred into the program, allowing students to keep the value of previously earned education credits. In fact, up to 75 credits total may be transferred into the 120-credit program in order to speed entry into a career of choice.

Graduates with a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management are expected to enter a profession that will grow faster than average. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that Human Resources, Training, and Labor Relations Managers will experience an 18 – 26% increase in employment through the year 2014. Other specific management careers may also be viewed at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics website.

When seeking graduates for entry level positions, some employers look for professionals trained in the human side of management, while others look for professionals with a more technical, business-minded background. Students attending the Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management program at Ashford University have the advantage of training in both aspects. This is an important factor in allowing graduates to enter the workforce with a competitive edge in the midst of numerous qualified graduates and experienced workers in the field.

The American Sociological Association claims that students with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology have a competitive advantage over other liberal arts students pursuing entry-level career positions. At the same time, the American Psychological Association has concrete evidence that students with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology secure jobs in government, business, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations. Both sociology and psychology have proven to be beneficial backgrounds for professionals interested in organizational management, but which is best?

What is Behavioral Science?

Sociology and psychology fall into the field of behavioral science. Behavioral science studies communication and decision-making processes in social systems. In addition to sociology and psychology, behavioral science includes disciplines like psychobiology, cognitive organization theory, management science, organizational behavior, and operations research. For a student having a difficult time deciding between sociology and psychology as a major, a behavioral science degree could be the perfect compromise.

Uses for Behavioral Science in the Professional World

A behavioral science degree can be particularly useful for the student interested in entering organizational management. Organizations today are in need of employees who understand the complex workings of the human mind and the dynamics of social interactions within the workplace. A professional with a behavioral science degree is particularly suited to understand organizational behavior management. He or she can dig into the messy details of the human factors that make an organization run successfully.

After scrolling through countless dead-end positions in the Sunday classifieds, many workers finally come to the realization that a college degree is a necessity in today’s job market. Next they are faced with the daunting task of choosing a field of study and a suitable program. The possibilities are indeed endless.

Even for those who fail to find Freud inspiring, an online psychology degree is turning out to be the perfect starting point for many students. The U.S. Department of Education found that in the 2003 – 2004 academic year 82,098 undergraduate psychology degrees were awarded. One of the reasons for its popularity could be that an online psychology degree can equip students with valuable skills for any number of career paths.

Investigation into the current job market reveals that developing a core set of transferable skills is a key factor in remaining competitive in any chosen field. Transferable skills are abilities that are developed in one setting that can be applied to another. According to Michael Brown, PhD, an associate professor of psychology at East Carolina University, a psychology degree teaches communication, analytical, and research skills, all of which are easily transferable to multiple job descriptions.

Perhaps even more important, psychology students get a head start at learning the subtle art of people skills. In an increasingly globalized world of diversity, there is an ever-growing need for professionals who understand the complexity of human behavior and how to apply that knowledge to the workplace. Programs such as the Bachelor of Business Administration in Organizational Psychology and Development at American InterContinental University are preparing students to meet the demands of today’s employers.

Whether one chooses to go on to pursue a graduate degree in psychology or opts to directly enter the work force, the career options are infinite. The American Psychological Association reports that recipients of an undergraduate degree in psychology work in a broad selection of fields such as:

Management

Sales

Administration

Teaching

Computer Applications

Research and Development

Graduates are entering the work force from an assortment of programs, and sifting through the numerous options can be a bit intimidating. One of the newest avenues for students to consider is an online degree program. Distance education affords the opportunity to enroll in classes while maintaining a current work schedule. It also links students to a large selection of programs that would otherwise not be available in their current locations. Thanks to current technology, the advantages of online education come with all the usual benefits of a classroom setting, including class discussion and student-professor interaction.

A good resource for finding a variety of online degree programs is the website run by College-Pages.com. It contains a wealth of information related to higher education and workforce development. Personally developed questions about a program of interest can be another source of information. A quick look at the classes in each program should reveal the types of careers for which its students will be prepared. Some students choose to find out who the program advisors are and put together a list of questions to ask them. There is also objective information about the outcomes of many online degrees, such as where program graduates are employed. With a little research, anyone can get started clicking their way to a college degree!

The American Psychological Association has recently described a ground-breaking new school-based program that is seeking solutions to the rising rates of depression in children. Today’s children have a 9% risk of experiencing major depression before the age of 14 and a 20% chance of experiencing at least one episode of major depression before they graduate from highschool.

Professionals with a Master of Science in School Psychology are concerned about these statistics due to their future implications. A child who has experienced major depression is further at risk for struggling with major depression as an adult. To combat this “common cold” of mental health, psychologists are using the discipline of school psychology to teach thinking habits in schools that will prevent depression.

Research from psychology graduate schools has pointed to the value of being positive in thinking and problem-solving skills. Professionals of school psychology chose to teach these skills to students at risk for major depression. Students in the new school-based program were taught to identify negative thinking patterns and replace them with positive thoughts. Areas that were targeted include self-image, thoughts about others, and thoughts about the world in general. Students were also taught assertiveness and relaxation techniques.

After the training, the professionals of school psychology followed up with the students six months and two years later. At the six-month point, children who had learned the new skills had fewer symptoms of depression and better behavior in the classroom than children who had not learned the skills. At the two-year point, children who had learned the prevention skills had a 22% rate of moderate to severe symptoms of major depression, whereas children who had not learned the skills had a 44% rate of moderate to severe major depression.

The program used in the study period is now in effect at multiple locations in honor of the original psychology graduate school that conducted the research. School systems in California, New Jersey, Texas, Minnesota, New York, and Illinois are using the program to improve mental health and classroom behavior of students.

This program serves as one of the many successes in the profession of school psychology.

Jobs for those with a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology are expected to outnumber the amount of graduates entering the work force from schools such as Capella University. Through the year 2014, the profession of Counseling Psychology is actually expected to grow faster than average according to the most recent Occupational Outlook Handbook. This comes as wonderful news for students wishing to pursue a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology.

Professionals with a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology typically help clients who are having trouble adjusting to everyday living. The government employs a whopping 4 out of 10 counselors in the U.S., and the remainder frequently works in a health services setting, such as a clinic or a hospital. A significant amount of professionals with a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology choose to forgo the job market altogether and become self- employed.

Beyond the general practice of Counseling Psychology are numerous specialties that can be pursued through a specialized course of study or a PhD in Counseling Psychology. Marriage and Family Therapists counsel clients on a variety of emotional issues to prevent individual and family crises. Substance Abuse Counselors work with people who have difficulties with alcohol, drugs, gambling, or eating disorders. Genetic Counselors work with families who have birth defects or genetic abnormalities that risk being passed on to future generations. They not only help the family to cope with the disorder itself, but they also assist the family in making decisions about the risk involved in conceiving children.

In order for a student with a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology to be a successful professional, several personal qualities are essential. The desire to help people is necessary as it is the central function of any position in Counseling Psychology. Counseling Psychologists should also be able to encourage trust, respect, and confidence from others. A client in distress must feel comfortable disclosing thoughts and problems in order for the counselor to inspire change.

Distance education programs such as those offered through Capella University have become a popular choice for students in pursuit of a Master of Science in Psychology. As students decide on a professional specialty and degree of preference, they have also begun looking for programs that accommodate current responsibilities such as work and family. A 1998 survey of governors showed that 83% agreed with the statement that “allowing students to obtain education anytime and anyplace via technology” would be a vital feature of higher education in the 21st century.

Why do high school students lack motivation in the classroom? What does the extent of a child’s vocabulary have to do with his or her reading ability? What accounts for the difference in reading capacity between two third grade students? These are but a few questions explored in the headlines of the latest issue of the Journal of Educational Psychology.

What is Educational Psychology?

Educational psychology is one of many specialties available when deciding on a degree in psychology. The discipline of educational psychology focuses on how people learn in an educational environment as well as the effectiveness of educational interventions. Educational psychology also uses social psychology to study schools as organizations and explores the psychology of teaching.

Educational Psychology vs. School Psychology

Whereas professionals with a degree in school psychology are more likely to work directly with children in educational environments, professionals with a Master of Science in Educational Psychology are heavily involved in research and academics. Educational psychology takes the outcomes of its studies and informs disciplines such as curriculum development, special education, and classroom management of its findings. For example, if educational psychology finds that children progress further in reading skills by grouping them according to similar ability levels, a first- grade teacher may then take that knowledge and divide her class into small groups during reading time.

Steps to Becoming an Educational Psychologist

In order to officially enter the field of educational psychology, a professional must first earn a Master of Science in Educational Psychology or a similar graduate degree. Psychology graduate schools, such as Capella University, offer focused programs in educational psychology that include classes in lifespan development, research methods, child psychology, and adult learning. A student can complete the Master of Science in Educational Psychology entirely online through Capella University’s distance education program. Psychology graduate schools that offer training through distance education are becoming a convenient, sophisticated route to a Master of Science in Educational Psychology while maintaining responsibilities such as work and family.

Job Outlook for Educational Psychologists

The profession of psychology as a whole is expected to grow between 18 – 26% through the year 2014 with one in four psychologists working in an educational setting. These predictions from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shed a promising light on a career in educational psychology. Students who are seriously considering entering the profession should be able to perform detailed work individually and in group settings. Students also must develop patience and perseverance for the amount of hard work and time required to harvest practical information from meticulous, academic studies.
