Working in nonprofit organization jobs is a way many people choose to infuse their careers with a fulfilling purpose. Although nonprofit agencies make no financial profits, paying positions exist within many of the companies in order to carry out the necessary functions of running an organization. One of those positions, the company grant writer, has a significant influence on the amount of money a nonprofit organization has to work with for carrying out its mission.

What is a Grant Writer?

Alternative titles for nonprofit organization jobs that involve grant writing include director of foundation relations and director of corporate relations. Working as a grant writer involves more than simply writing grant proposals. A grant writer is responsible for researching foundations and corporations that are offering financial grants and then submitting a detailed proposal explaining how the organization would use the money if chosen to receive the grant. Before submitting the proposal, the grant writer may also invite the grant giver to tour the nonprofit organization headquarters or a site where its work is being performed.

Required Education and Training to Work as a Grant Writer

Grant writing nonprofit organization jobs usually have no specific set of educational requirements. The Association of Fundraising Professionals reports that more than 90% of fundraisers for nonprofit agencies begin their career in another discipline. In order to be successful, grant writers must be good communicators and possess a certain amount of courage and confidence. A grant writer must be able to craft quality written proposals and to ask for needed funds without being overcome by shyness.

Prospective grant writers who are interested in nonprofit organization jobs now have the option of pursuing advanced education that is specifically geared towards the nonprofit sector. There are currently over 70 colleges that offer programs in fundraising for nonprofits while other schools, such as Capella University, offer a Master of Science in the Management of Nonprofit Agencies and a PhD in the Management of Nonprofit Agencies. Prospective students may visit College-Pages.com, the education and career resource website, for an extensive list of available programs.

Nonprofit organizations, neither a part of business or government, exist to further a cause rather than to make profits. Nonprofit agencies make no profits, but they still require financial resources to carry out necessary activities and programs. For students interested in pursuing nonprofit organization jobs, the position of fundraiser is one of many opportunities.

What is a Fundraiser?

The nonprofit job opportunity of fundraiser is one that encompasses seeking out money for the agency. It involves developing relationships with potential donors, hosting special events to raise awareness for the cause and solicit donations, requesting long-term regular gifts and bequests, writing grant letters, and directing phone and mail campaigns. In large organizations, there may be five financial nonprofit jobs that specialize in each of these categories of giving.

What Does a Fundraiser Do on a Daily Basis?

Nonprofit jobs in the area of large gift giving focus on researching potential donors and building relationships. Fundraisers may arrange for special gifts for major donors, such as putting his or her name on a building or giving tickets to a performance. The professional who secures the nonprofit job opportunity of planned giving also establishes relationships and stays current on tax, gift, and estate law in order to help donors receive the best tax benefits for their donations.

Other fundraising nonprofit jobs focus on event planning. Event coordinators have very detailed work, including everything from sending out invitations to planning the particulars of the event. Another detailed nonprofit job opportunity is directing campaigns. The mail campaign director may write a letter explaining the mission of the organization and asking for donations. The campaign director may also buy lists of names from marketing companies in order to better target the potential donor. He or she is then in charge of recording financial donations and sending out thank you notes.

Grant writing is another possibility in fundraising nonprofit organization jobs. A professional who has secured the nonprofit job opportunity of grant writer researches potential granters and submits a written proposal explaining the organization’s financial needs. A grant writer may also engage in relationship building by meeting with potential granters to increase a proposal’s chance of success.

What Education is Required to be a Fundraiser?

Although no specific education is required to hold fundraising nonprofit jobs, most fundraisers have a bachelor’s degree in marketing, a bachelor’s degree in public relations, or a bachelor’s degree in English. Many schools are now offering specialized degrees that focus on nonprofit management. Capella University offers a Master of Science in Human Services in Management of Nonprofit Agencies as well as a PhD in Human Services in Management of Nonprofit Agencies.

It also helps to have office experience in a nonprofit agency before beginning a nonprofit job search. Learning the ins and outs of the organization and observing fundraising activities is often the best preparation for landing a desirable nonprofit job opportunity in fundraising.

What Qualities are Necessary for Success as a Fundraiser?

Fundraising nonprofit jobs require a professional to be outgoing, confident, and service-oriented. Effective verbal and written communication skills are also a must as fundraisers must interact with potential donors and draft grant proposals and mail campaign letters. Finally, fundraising nonprofit jobs require individuals who are persuasive and not shy. Asking for money from a donor requires courage and the ability to explain why the organization’s cause merits a financial donation.

Students who are interested in nonprofit organization jobs may contact Capella University for more information. College-Pages.com also has an extensive list of available programs and education resources.

Model maker may not sound like an official profession but, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were over 11,000 model makers employed in May 2004. One of those professionals, Duane Martinez, creates models of everything from computers and gas pumps to MP3 players. When asked to describe his work for the Occupational Outlook Quarterly he stated, “It’s a little like magic.”

A Typical Day in the Life of a Model Maker

Martinez begins the modeling process when a designer presents an idea sketched on a piece of paper. He then uses Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to help him create a three-dimensional drawing from the original two-dimensional sketch. Using his Auto CAD training, he directs specialized tools to produce basic parts for a realistic model.

Initially, Martinez makes only a foam model until the designer has expressed approval with the shape. He then goes on to create a more realistic model made out of materials like aluminum, wood, plastic, leather, rubber, stone, and titanium. For the final touches, Martinez adds paint to imitate the desired texture of the model and sometimes even reproduces mini logos.

Essential Characteristics for Success as a Model Maker

According to Martinez, a successful model maker must be able to think spatially. Model makers have to look at a two-dimensional drawing and imagine it in a three- dimensional form from any angle. A steady hand and good eyesight are also essential as the work tends to be very small and detailed. A brief overview of Martinez’s work-life reveals that model makers must have perseverance in order to finish models on time. Martinez stated that he once stayed awake for thirty-six hours just to meet a deadline.

Education and Training for Model Makers

Martinez never completed a college degree in model making. However, he has a passion for his work, which he combined with a few college courses to help him land his first job as a model maker. Another possible way to become a model maker is to complete an Associate’s Degree in Architectural Drafting such as the program offered by Westwood College. Westwood College students receive training in the latest versions of Auto CAD software and go on to be eligible for any number of Auto CAD jobs.

Additional Types of Model Makers

There are actually many types of model makers currently in the industry. Martinez designs models of consumer products. Other model makers create models to be used in the special effects of movies. Still others construct museum displays or unique awards and trophies. A professional with an Associate’s Degree in Architectural Drafting are often sought after by employers for work on small-scale models of apartment buildings or amusement parks before the real versions are built.

Where to Find More Information

More information about the profession of model making is available through the Association of Professional Model Makers. For those interested in learning more about how Auto CAD software works, there are many samples available on the internet simply by typing “Auto CAD download free software” into any search engine. Students can also contact Westwood College or visit College-Pages.com, the education and career resource, for a complete list of available programs that provide Auto CAD training.

As the very name implies, nonprofit organizations make no profit. Consequently, a large portion of the organization’s labor is dependent on the time and efforts of volunteers. Juliet Orzal, Director of Volunteers recently featured in the Occupational Outlook Quarterly, manages the 50 to 100 volunteers that come to Martha’s Table on a daily basis. Orzal organizes the efforts of volunteers that make food services, day care, and tutoring programs possible through the DC based nonprofit organization.

What is a Manager of Volunteers?

A manager of volunteers finds, organizes, and trains volunteers for the necessary work of the organization. They focus on the mission of the organization to create nonprofit jobs for volunteers to fill. Another important part of the manager of volunteer’s work is thanking volunteers for fulfilling the numerous nonprofit jobs. Because the volunteers perform nonprofit jobs for free, thanks and personal satisfaction are all the payment they receive.

What types of things do Managers of Volunteers do on a daily basis?

The manager of volunteers is responsible for finding and recruiting volunteers to fill nonprofit jobs. This may include calling churches, schools, and businesses to increase awareness of a nonprofit job opportunity. It may also involve making presentations to various organizations in an attempt to discover willing volunteers for the available nonprofit jobs. Once a volunteer is recruited, the manager of volunteers then interviews each candidate in order to place them in the best nonprofit job opportunity.

Training is another vital function of the manager of volunteers. Training for nonprofit jobs may consist of just one day, or several days, of formal training classes. Often, the manager of volunteers will teach the training programs personally. The aim is to ensure that the volunteers are prepared to fulfill the nonprofit job opportunity and gain knowledge of what to expect.

Finally, the manager of volunteers serves as a vital resource for volunteers while they are working at nonprofit jobs. He or she, the manager, is responsible for making sure that volunteers have the necessary tools and knowledge to perform their duties successfully. The manager of volunteers also makes sure that the volunteers know that their work is appreciated. In addition to the regular verbal thanks, managers of volunteers are typically responsible for organizing formal events to show official thanks from the organization.

What kind of education is required to be a Manger of Volunteers?

Although there are no specific education requirements, managers of volunteers may need to be knowledgeable in a certain industry or skill set, depending on the nonprofit organization for which they work. Many managers of volunteers have a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a bachelor’s degree in social work, or a bachelor’s degree in human resource management. Increasingly, many schools are offering advanced degrees with a focus in management of nonprofit agencies. Capella University offers a Master of Science in Human Services in Management of Nonprofit Agencies as well as a PhD in Human Services in Management of Nonprofit Agencies.

Students interested in pursuing nonprofit organization jobs may contact Capella University for more information. College-Pages.com, the education resource web site, is also a valuable resource with an extensive list of available programs and education resources.

Over ten million people hold nonprofit jobs, according to Independent Sector, a research organization in Washington DC that is devoted to nonprofits. Nonprofit organizations such as the American Heart Association, Habitat for Humanity, and Goodwill offer numerous nonprofit jobs, but nearly every nonprofit organization has an executive director. In fact, in some nonprofit organizations executive director is the only paying nonprofit job opportunity within the agency.

What is an Executive Director?

Sometimes called the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), an executive director maintains a general overview of the entire organization. Typically the executive director manages and recruits workers, oversees the budget, and makes necessary decisions about operations and programs. The executive director seeks to grow the organization and choose activities that fit with the mission of the agency while ensuring that the company maintains activities within its available resources. Although holders of nonprofit executive jobs serve as managers of the organization, they answer to a board of directors for the final say on decisions.

What types of things do Executive Directors do on a daily basis?

On a day-to-day basis, executive directors meet with government and business leaders who may further the cause of the organization. In most nonprofit jobs, the executive director also makes presentations to the board of directors for major projects and decisions. In nonprofit jobs where the executive director is the only paid employee, he or she will help to maintain the daily responsibilities that need to be completed in each department. Approximately 25% of the executive director’s tasks include fund-raising, even when a formal fund-raising staff is available.

What other qualities are necessary for success as an Executive Director?

A recent article in the Occupational Outlook Quarterly describes several traits that are important in nonprofit executive jobs. Professionals who enjoy making plans and creating goals will be the most successful in nonprofit executive jobs. Executive directors must also be good managers with effective communication skills. They usually manage a staff and act as the spokesperson for the organization. Nonprofit executive jobs in small organizations require writing skills as the executive director may be responsible for writing grants. Executive directors must also have good mathematical skills in order to oversee a budget.

Students who are interested in pursuing nonprofit executive jobs may contact University of Phoenix for more information on its advanced degree programs. College-Pages.com is also a valuable source of information with a comprehensive list of available programs and educational resources.

With a background consisting of just a few college courses and a long history of playing with model cars as a teenager, Derek Sanders has landed a successful, fulfilling career as a model maker. He was recently profiled in a popular career journal for his unique occupation. Designers consult Sanders with ideas sketched on sometimes only a napkin, and he proceeds to make a three-dimensional foam model with the assistance of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.

What is the Function of an Architectural Drafter?

Becoming a model maker is just one creative use of an Associate’s Degree in Architectural Drafting. An architectural drafter serves as the link between designer and final product. In short, an architectural drafter is responsible for making accurate drawings and plans.

Auto CAD software has revolutionized the field of drafting. An architect creates drawings of blueprints, but a drafter with Auto CAD training fills in the fine details that the construction crew requires to make a solid structure. The pervasiveness of this widely used program can be seen simply through the numerous results that appear on the screen after typing “auto cad download free software” into any search engine.

Potential Jobs as an Architectural Drafter

Many graduates with an Associate’s Degree in Architectural Drafting choose to work for an architectural or engineering firm doing drafting detailing. A professional with an Associate’s Degree in Architectural Drafting may also find Auto-CAD jobs in contracting, subcontracting, and materials supply. Numerous construction-related industries provide still more job opportunities for a professional with extensive Auto CAD training.

Educational Requirements for Architectural Drafters

Although Sanders never completed an official architectural drafting degree, an Associate’s Degree in Architectural Drafting can be a way to jump-start a career and get a foot in the door at prospective places of employment. Westwood College, with its numerous locations around the nation, is just one of the modern programs students are choosing to attend while receiving their necessary training. Programs similar to the Associate’s Degree in Architectural Drafting at Westwood College give students hands-on experience with the newest version of Auto CAD software and are taught by professors with real-world industry experience.

Where to Find More Information

Students may contact Westwood College for additional information about an Associate’s Degree in Architectural Drafting. Westwood College boasts that its students are prepared to work as architectural CAD technicians, engineering CAD technicians, architectural draftspersons, and engineering draftspersons immediately upon graduation. Students may find one of these positions to be the perfect entrance into the architectural drafting industry, or they may come up with creative ideas of their own like Sanders’s model making.

Criminal justice graduates, rejoice! As one who is well-versed in the inner workings of the law, criminal justice graduates are the guardians of society – they investigate crimes, patrol the streets for criminals, and oversee the enforcement of laws. Earning a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, however, does not doom the young graduate to a life on the community police force or local law enforcement. Graduates with bachelor degrees in criminal justice find a variety of employment opportunities at the city, state, and federal levels, from homeland security to forensics.

Criminal justice graduates with bachelor degrees can easily find work in protective services. This covers occupations involved in patrol work, like serving as corrections officers with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, working as a US Border Patrol officer for the Department of Immigration, or acting as an agent for the US Marshals or Federal Bureau of Investigations. The Drug Enforcement Agency also employs graduates with bachelor degrees in criminal justice. Employment at these agencies requires attendance at designated training academies. Because of the physical demands involved in patrol work, graduates should be strong physical and emotional form before applying to these positions.

Criminal justice bachelor degree graduates may also find rewarding careers within the court system. Graduates serve as court counselors and victims service counselors. Many seek advanced training and educational opportunities and emerge as lawyers and prosecutors in District Attorney’s offices and in private firms. Others work as paralegals or as legal counsel in corporations. Careers in the law carry lucrative financial benefits, and are the crown jewel for the graduate of criminal justice.

The popularity of television dramas like CSI has propelled other graduates of criminal justice bachelor degrees to seek employment as crime scene investigators. Crime scene investigators go out to crime scenes and collect forensics evidence to be processed at the crime lab. The pay may not be as lucrative as that of the lawyer, but any individual with a liking of the natural sciences and a mind for analysis would find satisfaction in a career as a crime scene investigator.

Graduates that have psychology backgrounds and experience in investigations could find glamorous work as psychological profilers in regional and federal enforcement agencies. Criminal justice bachelor degree graduates looking for work as a psychological profiler should continue their criminal justice studies to the master’s level and have some forensic science training to get a competitive advantage for employment in the field.

Criminal justice graduates with bachelor degrees can serve the public in civil positions. Those with a desire to communicate their experiences to future generations can elect to teach criminal justice at the community college level or volunteer in civic organizations. A person with an educational background in criminal justice can put their knowledge to use as a writer or beat reporter for newspapers and broadcast networks. Others can elect to use their knowledge of criminal justice to help others, as in psychological professions, or social work.

Thus, an educational degree in criminal justice does not doom one to police work. Knowledge is power, and with criminal justice, it is the power to do good for society as a whole.

Careers in health care employment remain as hot as ever. Everybody needs a doctor. Innovations in technology improve the quality of life so that people live longer and better lives. This fact alone drives the industry to constantly evolve and bring new employees into the fold. Therefore, health care employment will always provide the best opportunities and growth potential, especially with the approaching retirement of the Baby Boomer generation.

According to the United States Depart of Labor’s Bureau of Statistics, health care employment constituted the largest industry in 2004, providing 13.5 million jobs nationwide. In fact, 8 out of 20 jobs created were in health care, and most wage and salaried positions projected to increase until 2014 will be in health care employment. Hospitals employ the majority of workers; hospitals constitute roughly 2% of all health care establishments, yet they employ over 40% of all health care workers.

Health care employment enjoys some of the most flexible work schedules of all industries. A large proportion of health care workers are employed part-time, making health care employment a great alternative to students, women, and older workers.

Health care employment requires various degrees of education and training. Some positions demand rigorous and specialized training. Generally, most positions in health care employment require less than four years of college. Specialized positions require additional coursework. Regional occupation and vocation programs provide training for entry-level positions in health care employment, such as licensed vocational nurses (LVNs), emergency medical technicians, and office assistants. Other positions, such as dental or medical hygienists, medical assistants, and paramedics, require a certificate or associate’s degree in the field at a two-year community college. Social workers and therapists require a Bachelor’s degree as a minimum to work within the health care industry. Practitioners of medicine require the most formal training – at least four years of graduate work, followed by an additional two to seven years of practical training in more specialized fields.

Clearly, health care employment leads the pack in education and formal training. In addition to the training and education needed to arrive at the position, state and federal law mandate specific standards of continuing education for nurses, doctors, and other medical personnel.

Today, training programs are designed to recruit and maintain the best workers, guaranteeing a consistent passing down of skills and experiences. For example, because of the shortage of properly trained nurses in the state, Azusa Pacific University in California collaborates with Kaiser Permanente to recruit and train potential nurses in the industry. Kaiser Permanente pays the full tuition of these trainees. In return, these trainees promise to work in the health care industry for a specified period of time, returning to teach and pass on these skills to a future generation of nurses.

Advancements in medical technology and the evolving face of the health care field will always require the extra education and training to stay abreast of current and future trends. Best of all, health care employment won’t suffer the constant outsourcing headaches and pink slip worries of other industries. With continued job growth expected until 2014, there’s no better industry to get into.

Computer technology can be roughly divided into two academic areas: computer science and information technology.

Computer science is the physics, chemistry and mathematics behind chip design, computer design, and the functionality of all the pieces of hardware in the industry. Fiber optics and network router design are parts of computer science. In many universities, computer science majors are housed in the electrical engineering department, where the science began.

Information technology (IT) is often a separate field of study. The academic subdivisions of IT include: Networking. Database design. Maintenance and security. Software design. Computer programming.

Universities and colleges often offer information technology degrees with areas of concentration such as database design.

Technical schools do provide some technology certification programs in such areas as network maintenance and system security. More often, however, these operational jobs are taught at the level of an associate’s college degree.

Online colleges provide degrees in computer technology that cover both areas of study. University of Phoenix Online has a fairly inclusive bachelor’s degree program in IT. Their technology school offers the following degrees: Associate of Arts in Information Technology. Associate of Arts in Information Technology/Networking. Associate of Arts in Information Technology/Visual Communication. Bachelor of Science in Business/ e-Business. Bachelor of Science in Business/Information Systems. Bachelor of Science in Information Technology. Bachelor of Science in Information Technology/Information System Security. Bachelor of Science in Information Technology/Visual Communications. Master of Business Administration/Technology Management. Master of Information Systems. Doctor of Management/Information Systems and Technology.

University of Phoenix wraps many of their IT majors into business degree programs. They do not offer courses in the area of computer science.

Colorado Technical University has an online program that qualifies as a computer school of its own. They offer a Bachelor of Science in Software Systems Engineering that combines electrical engineering with the integrative techniques used in computer design. It’s an interesting mix of academic focal points: Fundamentals of Computer Programming. Electrical Engineering Techniques. Database Design and Management. Software Engineering.

Another online computer school is CDI College, which provides training programs in IT that prepare students for certification. Their scholastic selections include nine networking courses of study, including one designed to meet certification for Cisco network products and designs. They have five choices in the Programmer/Developer area, two of which are focused on the Web. CDI College also has a number of certification training programs. For software, they offer courses for business applications specialist and Microsoft Office specialist. CDI teaches certification courses for computer programmers and office information technology specialists, as well.

These are three online colleges with distinctly different types of curricula. CDI can make you a certified tech in a matter of several months. Colorado Technical University has degrees available in computer science and in software development. University of Phoenix focuses on the business side of IT. These are only three examples: a little research will find you the online tech school that you need if you haven’t found it here.

Careers in technology can be found at every professional level and, today, you can find courses taught for every type of job. For purposes of discussion, it helps to divide the field of technology into two roughly drawn areas: computer science and information technology.

Computer science is the study of technology’s hardware: what the component parts are, how the parts are built, and how the parts work. This can apply as much to a network router as it applies to a computer. Information technology deals with the use of the computer’s output: digital data in an assortment of formats. Thus, information technology (IT) includes the functions of the Internet, computer networks, software design, database security, and so forth.

Colleges and universities have developed curricula for many subdivisions of these two broad areas. Degree levels ranging from an associate’s to a doctorate can be found for computer science, information technology and related fields of study. About 40% of America’s colleges and universities offer some form of extension learning or online education program, and there are many colleges that function solely online as well. So, availability for technology schools is widespread – local community colleges, universities, or online schools all have technology programs.

There are courses of study for jobs in technology that do not lead a college diploma. 9- to 18-month programs that result in certification for the student can be found in areas such as network maintenance, office software, computer maintenance and other technical support positions. Examples of these types of certificates can be found at CDI College: CISCO Certified Network Administrator. Network Administrator. Network and Internet Security Specialist. Network and Internet Support Specialist. Network Support Specialist. Programmer/Network Support Analyst. Computer Programmer/Web Developer. Programmer Analyst/Internet Solutions Developer. Programmer Analyst/Web Developer. Computer Business Applications Specialist. Computer Programmer.

While CDI focuses on certification programs, Capella University is an online college at the other end of the educational spectrum, offering four master of science degree programs in information technology: MS in IT – General Information Technology. MS in IT – Information Security. MS in IT – Network Architecture and Design. MS in IT – System Design and Programming.

Kaplan University fills in the middle ground with 6 associate’s degrees and 6 bachelor’s degrees in information technology. Among their fields of specialization are the following: AAS in Computer Information Systems. AASCIS/Java. AASCIS/Networking. AASCIS/Programming. AASCIS/Wireless Networking. BS in Information Technology. BSIT/Database. BSIT/Multimedia and Animation. BSIT/Networking. BSIT/Programming. BSIT/Web Development.

Generally, online technology degrees will take less time to complete than those offered at a traditional university or college. If you have college credits from previous experience, some of them may be transferable. An associate’s degree can take as little as 13 months and, a bachelor’s, 2 to 3 years.

The range of educational options and professional opportunities is wide and getting wider all the time. Credentialing programs are becoming very specific, with online training programs available in certain computer languages or code writing. College degrees are also being developed that focus on an increasing number of specialties, such as microelectronics and fiber optic networking. There is an option to match almost any level of initiative and area of interest.
